That's too bad. You still going to try to go up for Trail Days if the knee calms down? Not to hike, just to watch the show?

You ever climb Norwottock & Horse's Caves at other end of Holyoke Range. It's another nice hike in the area. http://www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/trails/holyoke.pdf

Have indeed, and yes, it's very pretty, though the view from Norwottuck's summit is a bit "meh" compared to Holyoke and the higher Mt. Tom peaks. I've done the whole Holyoke Range, save for about 0.3 in the Seven Sister segment - ran low on daylight on two different hikes, one from the Notch between Bare and Norwottuck and one from Taylor Notch. Will go snag it at some point. Very nice place for a hike - Holyoke's summit grounds have great views, don't they?

Growing up in So Hadley Judd Park at base of Bare Mt was where I camped a lot with my scout troop. Norwottuck & Hitchcock used to have fire towers on them. In my teens I hiked weekends with a friend doing the M&M from Mt Tom to Northfield MT.

You probably should call one of the outfitters just to verify the time to get to the summit of Whitetop Mt. From Damascus. It's been a few years, but I recall a very long winding road to the top and I think it was at least 30 minutes if leaving out of Damascus.

So my current plan is to drive to Damascus and leave my car around noon Friday, get a shuttle south to the 421 trailhead, hike north 5 miles to Abingdon Gap Shelter area, and make camp near there. This is about a mile or so N of McQueens Gap Rd. Maybe meet everyone there and hike into Damascus together, around 9-10 miles on Saturday. Subject to change of course, depending on progress /whereabouts of Oz and IM, but sounds workable. Any info on shelter/water/campsites/etc. is welcome. This is new territory for me.

Guessing Oz and IM might take a break in Damascus, and Coach and HB will get their long drive underway fairly early Sunday. HM is going home Sat night. I am open to suggestions. I lean toward camping again myself since I don't get out much.
Suppose car camping at Whitetop and day hiking would be an option for Sat night and Sunday, before driving home.

If I have one day to hike in New Hampshire where should I go? 10 to 15 miles max.

You could go for a Presi Traverse, which, standard issue, would be about 20 miles. To hit all the Presi 5000-footers, you could start up the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail from near the Cog RR, tag Mt. Monroe, ascend Washington from there, and work your way over to Jefferson. With only one car and no shuttle, you could go back down the Jewell Trail near Mt. Clay after a 1.8 mile backtrack. If can make arrangements to get back via car or shuttle to your start point, you can continue on and hit Adams and Madison.

Moosilauke's awesome, but it's only 7-ish miles for a N-S traverse. Franconia Ridge, too, is awesome and extraordinarily beautiful, but for majesty and grandeur, it's hard to match the high Presi's.

Franconia ridge Traverse, Mt Washington From either 21387 Pinkham or Cog base station. Both allow for loops that you can hit a few other peaks & traverse above tree line. Or Wildcat/Carter loop from Pinkham. Some easier ones Mt Monadnock. 213842138521386 elatively low mountain in the south but fantastic views because summit was burned off to get rid of wolves. Chocura is another one with great view. See Chaco's pics from this past weekend.

The partial Presi Traverse I mention would be about 15 miles. If you want to do the full P-T, closer to 20 miles as noted, you start at the Crawford Path parking lot near the AMC Highlands Center off Rt. 302, ascend to Pierce (the shortest and most southerly Presi), tag Eisenhower, do Monroe, etc., as I noted above, descending from Madison via the Valley Way, which puts you out at the major Appalachia Trailhead on Rt. 2. Bring Microspikes or the like if you're going in May, as you might want them descending the northern slopes of Adams/Madison - they're among the last areas in the Whites to retain their ice and snow. If you want to cut elevation gain, you can snip out certain summits along the way and stay on the Crawford Path/Gulfside A.T. routing. All according to your appetite for climb and your legs' and body's ability to digest it.

The full Presi is an awesome feat. If you want just to hit all the 5Ks, as I suggested, the nice thing is that the Ammo Trail, on ascent, is awesome with many pretty waterfalls and includes a 1560' climb in its final mile, from Gem Pool to the Lakes of the Clouds hut. I love that trail.

The Den mother had a good friend that was hiking the AT. He was coming through Daleville in the winter months, I remember that.... Anyway, he stayed at her home for a week or so. She had him come to a meeting to talk about the AT and his hike. I just remember thinking this guy was a crazy person for hiking the trail. It was freezing cold. I remember my main concern was not being able to shower very often.( I still miss that when I hike but I like the experience of hiking way more than smelling like a rose, everyday.) I knew nothing about the AT or hikers that hiked it. I remember that I kept looking at him and listening to him trying to figure out why he would even be interested in doing such a thing... I kept asking my friend.. Why is he doing this? Who knew years later, I , myself would be so interested in the trail and the ones that hike it.... that's crazy! :sun

WOO, I appreciate what you do. As a father of three sons that are/were scouts and a being a former Cub Master and Scout Master among other roles I have seen it first hand. It is a a great organization that teaches boys so many good things they need to be good strong men. This very issue is a part of my Wood Badge patrol project since it pains me every time I see the scouting stereotypes displayed as normative for the whole organization. I'm proud to be a Scouter and a Cubmaster. No person and no organization is perfect but I consistently see the BSA trying to do the right thing, consistent with it's core values in an ever-changing and complex world. As far as LNT is concerned, I really don't see anyone else teaching it. I know my kids aren't getting it through school.

HM - loved your story. I got hooked on the AT because one of my teachers in the 7th and 8th grade hiked the AT every summer trying to finish it. I'd never heard of a thru back then but the mere thought of spending more than a couple days in the woods was mesmerizing. Now I live for those weeks where I can take my children out and show them the joy of the outdoors. I had tears in my eyes watching Ken Burns: The National Parks on Netflix. It's how I grew up. I hope they fall in love with it as much as I did, or at least learn to respect it.

I hear ya, WOO. It's great to stand up for the BSA. I think the BSA, like everyone else has stated, is a good thing. Any organization, church or anything else is as good as the people that are a part of it. People are never flawless. People make bad choices, sometimes. We need to acknowledge that, when people point it out.
No one should broad brush the BSA in a 100% positive way, just like on one should broad brush it in a 100% negative way. It's just not the truth, either way you look at it. If someone wants to paint it in a 100% negative way, we should acknowledge the negative but should try to get them to acknowledge the positive, as well.
I believe if you don't alienate the person, with strong negative feelings, that can happen. If one jumps all over them- they get defensive, fight back and then check out. They are gone. There's no winners. The chance for anyone to have a meaningful discussion is gone. Just a bunch of negative comments being slung back and forth at each other.... that's my feelings about it all.

I let my emotions rule my behavior all the time. It's hard not to react to those feelings. I get so annoyed, mad and hurt etc.. by people, sometimes. So easy to just let it fly, baby, just let it fly....

I think everyone, in here, holds it all together pretty well. I'm proud to call y'all my friends. :sun Forgive me if I step out of line every now and then- I try really hard not too.

They didn't even go that fast.
Devil's shingleSince the early days of the railway's construction the workers wanted to minimize time when climbing and descending the ramp, so they invented slideboards fitting over the cog rack and providing enough room for themselves and their tools. These boards – no two were exactly alike – were approximately 90 cm (35 in) long by 25 cm (9.8 in) wide, made of wood with hand-forged iron and with two long hardwood handles usually attached at the down-mountain end. Common times for the descent of the mountain using these boards were about 15 minutes. The record was 2:45, an average speed above 100 km/h (62 mph).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Washington_Cog_Railway#cite_note-theheartofnewengland.com-1)
The "Devil's shingles" were banned in 1906 after the accidental death of an employee. Later the design of the rack was changed so the old braking mechanism could not grip any more.

On a happier note - getting excited here. Leave Sunday for the High Country Pathway with my daughter! Will not be pohoing that week. I get tired of all the bashing of scouting here at WB from people that have never been or don't have kids... they hear that retoric on the news about gay's and scouting and then they need to post it here. I give up... the more I post those threads the more folk get angry at me when I try to defend the good in the organization.

I hope I've not been one of the angry ones about whom you complain. I've been both a Scout (made Life, but never Eagle, for reasons that I won't discuss here), and a Scoutmaster. Neither experience inclines me to rejoin the organization. In both cases, it was neither the Scouts nor the national organization, nor the organizational goals and ideals that drove me out; it was, pure and simple, the parents. In particular, when I was a Scoutmaster, I simply got tired of laboring under a perpetual cloud of suspicion. Since I have no sons, I must have been in Scouting for evil reasons, or so some Scouts' mothers believed.

This was about thirty years ago. I'm sure that the mothers have only gotten worse over the intervening time.

The troll over there, alas, isn't a troll. I don't think I've ever encountered a group of 6 or 8 Scouts without at least one mother who felt that way. It was particularly obnoxious when the mother who thought that way had a 12-year-old hooligan who loved sneaking up and surprising me while I was watering a bush or squatting over a cathole and hollering "I SAW MR KENNY'S [insert obscene name for a body part]!" for the entire patrol to hear.

UPDATE!
IM, Army Ant and myself have arranged a double slackpack from Hampton.
