That's funny. We got my nephew one of these for his birthday or Christmas. Everybody else got him remote this, remote that, cars, planes, you name it. Do you know that peg board and hammer was all that kid would play with. Everybody was trying to get him to play with "their" toys but that hammer bench was all he wanted. They were so mad at us. 2 - 3 weeks later my sister-in-law call and says I'd really like to thank you for that toy. The kid wont put it down. All day long, bang, bang, bang. It's driving me nuts. Try and take it away and he pitches a fit. Thanks a lot.

ATM, that is awesome! :)

Well, in addition to that. I know one cannot be construed as an official hiker without purchasing the proper gear (the local sporting goods store will attest to that)... With that, one clearly must have more gear to be an OFFICIAL poho.

That is one of the great advantages of section hiking, is that you can continually refine your gear over time (also watching for bargains and good deals too). Where as with a thru if you are not happy you are will be paying the going rate at the outfitters along the way to replace it.

Uh-oh... When I heard there might not be a prom, I gave the cummerbunds to the dogs. They played tug o' war with some of them, one of the dogs lined her bed with more of them, and Miss Holly thought they looked stunning when she tied them to her tail and ran fast. Oops. Guess some hikers will get some pre-worn cummerbunds.

Can't wait to read the book! :) Sounds like you have had some fascinating trips and stories to share. Always a good thing! Maybe we can hear some of the stories around the campfire?

Hmmm... Maybe I should set up a portable gear shop along the AT. In the sections where there are no outfitters. That could work!

hes doing well. had his own personal best 19 mile day last week.
its really cool that so many start out at springer with all these doubts and fears, and with the weather we've hiked through last spring, how they deal with those doubts and fears and find a way to get through it, which in turn gives them confidence that they can indeed "get through it" again and again.i was breaking oz,im and aa's chops about spending so many nights off trail, and explaining that if they would just get out in it and deal with it, they would find out its not so bad andactually makes that sunshine or clear starry night that much more sweet.dont remember who it was i hiked with that coined the phrase, but "you gotta love the suck" or as the elf puts it "this sucks and i love it."
its incredibly liberating to find out how how little you need to be happy. i dont think i stopped smiling the whole 42 days i was out. i love being out there in it, and cant wait to return.

What are the roaming charges in a crevasse these days? Must be expensive.

defnitely lost weight, maybe 10 lbs.

its kinda impossible to not lose weight.you gorge in towns, but its hard to get enough calories, good calories, not sugar calories, to maintain weight, while youre on the trail.

So you went up a variant of Tuck's and down Lion Head Winter Route? Did you have fun, Rasty? Looks like today was about as gorgeous as yesterday, which was sterling. Saturday was great, too. I love the White Mountains, hard and severe though they can be! Would enjoy seeing pictures if you have some to post. :sun

The good thing is that, except for snow fields, when you get above tree line up there the snow and ice are almost gone. I'd bet you dealt with not a lot of snow once you got off Tucks. Would be interesting to know what that trail was like, since it's such a wide road-bed trail. Did you have to deal with monorail on it, or was it mostly clear due to sun shining in on it? The trails I was on were clear below about 2800', with some patches below.

alright so the conitnuing saga of hikerboy gets even more cool. i went to talk to my boss this morning. i had the idea of going back, working for 3 months and then hitting the trail again from maine sobo. wanted to tell him i believein training s a key way to grow a recessionproof, profitbale dealership, that i no longer wanted to work out of the douglaston store, but would prefr to move to our roslyn store whee i had started and train people from that location.
when i met him, i told him all about my trip, and when i finished, he told me he needed me back to rebuild the roslyn stores business. it had been scheduled to close by gm when we opened douglaston, but now theyve allowed us to keep it and issued a new license. so he wants me there to build a new team and to get the place rocking again.did i say i wanted to work for 3 months and hit the trail again? he said he wanted me to give it 3 months and then i could decide what id like to do. when i asked him if he had any problem with me taking off in august to go to maine, he said not at all. when i told him i may thru hike , he told me to go for it.

when i met him, i told him all about my trip, and when i finished, he told me he needed me back to rebuild the roslyn stores business. it had been scheduled to close by gm when we opened douglaston, but now theyve allowed us to keep it and issued a new license. so he wants me there to build a new team and to get the place rocking again.did i say i wanted to work for 3 months and hit the trail again? he said he wanted me to give it 3 months and then i could decide what id like to do. when i asked him if he had any problem with me taking off in august to go to maine, he said not at all. when i told him i may thru hike , he told me to go for it.
needless to say, weve worked it out, and i'll go back to work on monday.
awesome; you've got some powerful mojo working on your behalf!

i had so much magic following me on the trail, it couldnt help but follow me off as well.
one day as i approached spivey gap, i knew i was about out of fuel. it was an .08mi roadwalk to a store that may or may not have canisters, and i wasnt anxious to add to a 16 mi day if i didnt know it would be worth it. as i approached the gap, there was a parking turnoff with a garbage can, and on top of the can was a canister with just enough fuel for the 2 more days i needed to resupply. my entire trip was filled with such coincidences.from day one, i never worried and always knew somehow that things would just fall into place. and they did just that.
real trail magic.

Yay HB! :clap

GM dealership in Roslyn? Is that the Chevy dealer on Northern Blvd a little bit off of Searingtown? If so, I was not quite in hollering distance last week, we were burying my aunt in Holy Rood in Westbury and I went by on the Northern State on the way home.

Gonna stay in Island Park/Long Beach, or move to the Nawth Shaw?

my plan is to have no plan at all. i dont worry, and things fall into place.
every day on the trail was different. i never knew quite whee my daily destination would be and if you asked me i would tell you to ask me around 2 oclock or so, id usually have a pretty good idea where id end up.most days id hike around 16-18 miles. i had about 8 or 9 20 mile days and one or 3 neros of 6 miles or less. every day i would take what the trail had to offer, if there was a beautiful spot to stop and enjoy, i would stop and enjoy, other days i would hike for 10 huors straight. i would listen to my body and make sure i wasnt pushing to hard. 18 miles is the limit of my comfort zone, when i pushed to 19 or 20 ,that last mile or so would always seem like it was taking forever.

I am trying to get some work done. I am starting to suffer from the Sunday nite drive. I got home around 0230, got to bed by 0330, I woke up just before my alarm would normally go off. Hey Everybody:

Feeling guilty for not posting for a while - been working on my family cabin in N GA and there is no computer (or TV (or phone)) there which I do like but I've been out of touch for a couple of weeks. Really psyched about all of the water in the GA creeks and rivers - everything seems very alive. Anyway, thought I'd pour myself a little cocktail and sit down at the Cafe after a long respite - - - aaaahhh -- - what have you cats been up to?

- As a Wise Old Owl that has been bitten by a Alligator... One should not offer Politics with Alcohol unless the folks around the campfire bring it up first.

We have a new motto up at the cafe... Don't feed the Alligator and if you do, you must jump the fence and retrieve what you lobbed over.

We have one in the pond in front of the Cafe keeps the kids away from fishing.

It is wonderful....and I have so much work to do, I can't take time off right now. To any of you folks recognize these systems. I do not have gastro distress....but I've had no appetite.

Sounds like the bronchitis that I got when hiking with 1azarus a couple of months ago (and doesn't sound like norovirus symptoms). I had to get off trail because breathing was so rough. A five day course of Azithromycin fixed it for me.

The sweaty chills together with the congested chest mean that you probably want to see a doc to rule out pneumonia.

Thanks Doc. It sounds like what Oz had at the beginning of his walk. I didn't think it was noro-no gastro! I am one of those stubborn old coots that doesn't go to the doctor until I'm on my death bed!
