Even better, I'm a public elementary school MUSIC teacher. I've got it made ( PLUS the 5th graders are on a field trip today).

I just try to make sure I don't make any kids hate music because of their music teacher.

Totally agree. Two of the best section hikes I've ever taken. The lines to get in the park by car weren't pleasant but walking in on foot was a piece of cake. Every vista transformed into golds, yellows and reds. I have some killer pics of the BRP empty in the evening light and again in the morning as we crossed. We didn't, however, get to see a bear :( Hard with 3 kids and a dog. Even the most tame animals still ran away from us :p

Pure genius, but something is missing. It is an intangible that cannot be expressed, it has to experienced. Those that know it would agree. Those that do not know it would disagree if it was explained. It is sad that the way this man's life ended shows that he did not find that intangible that gives feet and reason and pinning to the incredible words he spoke. Regardless of the strength or purity or wisdom of the words, the words are just funny little things until they are tested. I agree with the words, but something is missing. I wish he had found that intangible. If he did, a couple of his words would have been different. If they were different, I believe his words would not be so acclaimed, but I believe he would still be alive today.

now I can't get the theme from the Wizard of Oz out of my head.

By the way can I rant just for a moment on the uselessness of weather forecasting in the spring. I keep seeing partly cloudy (or at least a giant sunball with a little cloud in the middle) or similar on the forecast for the next day only to wake up to socked in and raining. On my last section hike every single day, the morning of, was wrong. Arrrgh. All this hiking in rain and mud puddles at the bottom of styles is giving me rainy hike flashbacks. I need to get out of my cube and go walk in it some :banana

Rant over. I know it's really hard to predict the weather accurately. If someone could do it they'd be rich beyond their wildest dreams. As I awoke one morning,
When all sweet things are born,
A robin perched upon my sill,
To welcome the coming morn.

He whistled a song so sweetly,
And so softly did he sing,
That thoughts of joy and happiness
To my heart did he bring.

As he cocked his little head,
And paused for a moments lull,
I quickly closed the window,
And crushed his little skull.

A hunter shot at a flock of geese
That flew within his reach,
Two were stopped in their rapid flight
And fell on the sandy beach.

The male bird lay at the water's edge
And just before he died,
He faintly called to his wounded mate
And she dragged herself to his side.

She bent her head and crooned to him
In a way distressed and wild,
Caressing her one and only mate
As a mother would a child.

Then covering him with her broken wing
And gasping with failing breath,
She laid her head against his breast
A feeble honk ...then death!

This story is true though crudely told,
I was the man in this case,
I stood knee deep in snow and cold
And the hot tears burned my face.

I buried the birds in the sand where they lay,
Wrapped in my hunting coat,
And I threw my gun and belt in the bay
When I crossed in the open boat.

Hunters will call me a right poor sport
And scoff at the thing I did,
But that day something broke in my heart ...
And shoot again??? God forbid!!!

A hunter shot at a flock of geese

That flew within his reach,

Two were stopped in their rapid flight

And fell on the sandy beach.

The male bird lay at the water's edge

And just before he died,

He faintly called to his wounded mate

And she dragged herself to his side.

She bent her head and crooned to him

In a way distressed and wild,

Caressing her one and only mate

As a mother would a child.

Then covering him with her broken wing

And gasping with failing breath,

She laid her head against his breast

A feeble honk ...then death!

This story is true though crudely told,

I was the man in this case,

I stood knee deep in snow and cold

And the hot tears burned my face.

I buried the birds in the sand where they lay,

Wrapped in my hunting coat,

And I threw my gun and belt in the bay

When I crossed in the open boat.

Hunters will call me a right poor sport

And scoff at the thing I did,

But that day something broke in my heart ...

And shoot again??? God forbid!!!

Just had an "are you kidding me" moment. Been doing shakedown hikes... slowly building up pack weight. Hiked with 29lbs on back last weekend. Felt good. Felt real good. Decided to load pack to simulated weight going into 100-mile wilderness. I have a few luxury items (heavy camera, fishing gear,etc.). Pack weight without food and water is 26lb. We are taking our time, fishing, doing spur trails, and only being resupplied twice going across Maine. The wilderness is going to take parts of 10 days with 9 nights. I loaded up pack with food and starting water accordingly. 44lbs does not feel good. I am not the man that Tipi is. I can't imagine lugging any more than this. Not sure I want to lug even 44. I am a gram weenie. My brother-in-law is lugging as much as 10 lbs more than me. Getting scared.

Oh, I think I out-did that. My daughter and I were laboring under way too much pack weight and fell behind our schedule. That and the weight combined with my boots tore my feet up and I have hundreds of miles in those boots - literally. However, I got good blisters in some of the "toughest" parts of my feet. So we killed off the schedule and backtracked at our leisure and enjoyed that part of the hike much more. Given that we dropped more food weight than many people carry in pack weight. With reasonable food, it would have been much better. Oh well. Two things learned, but good:

1) I guess I am part of the shoes, not boots, crowd.
2) NEVER go to the store without some detailed plan of what you will eat and when - buying by feel about killed me!

Oh, and Northern Michigan was a fair bit hotter than Southern Michigan - what's up with that?

So the feet are starting to feel better. Pride, not as much, yet.

As long as it doesn't have bed bugs it will not be my worst hotel but it does not have an appearance and condition that inspires me.
Only the line of black clouds on the ridge tells me that being here is a good move.

I would be absolutely amazed if any of your gear actually wore out by the end of your hike.

Worn out one pair of shoes.
I haven't found it necessary to change my sleeping bag yet.
What gear should i have that shouldn't last a thru hike?

I am a strong advocate of getting tested for Lymes if after any hike you present flu/cold like symptoms....especially if you are concerned enough that you are at the doctors office. I have seen WAY to many diagnoses that doctors get wrong with Lymes and attribute it to everything else but Lymes.

I would like to advise that I do NOT endorse this as a place to stay.
As long as it doesn't have bed bugs it will not be my worst hotel but it does not have an appearance and condition that inspires me.
Only the line of black clouds on the ridge tells me that being here is a good move.
Twentyyards from reception I lose wifi.
My room is 40 yards away.
HB may tut tut but I like wifi it lets me "chat" to my wife and the cafe.
Going to eat shortly.
Going to try and get a 16 oz burger WITHOUT cheese. I would be absolutely amazed if any of your gear actually wore out by the end of your hike.

Hotels can be rough on your gear! Platinum blazing Australian style! :D

turtle fast that is a really good point....what harm would it do to get tested anyway? Nothing.

So Dr. Levy says my 100* fever and nite sweats are bacterial, so I got a script. He's in his 70s, has been my Doc since i was 25. Knows I'm 55 going on 25. I brief him on where I was and the 2 afflictions that were going on down south, the Noro and Oz's Crud. He said it was NOT noro! Anyway, he starts to ask me all the questions about the AT.....Is that a real trail, is it marked, how do you know where you are going....isn't it dangerous... people have gotten murdered, raped....pillaged, oh sheeeet I start to laugh which sends me into a coughing fit. But Lou, your'e an I-talian Yankee down there...didn't anyone harass you? Doc, come on...no one is going to harass me. But, they might have a gun!:D

Did you tell him you weren't in GA.
