I am a strong advocate of getting tested for Lymes if after any hike you present flu/cold like symptoms....especially if you are concerned enough that you are at the doctors office. I have seen WAY to many diagnoses that doctors get wrong with Lymes and attribute it to everything else but Lymes.

turtle fast that is a really good point....what harm would it do to get tested anyway? Nothing.

Thank you, you make absolute sense. I have my script and I must report back on Monday. And I will tell him my concerns on that. I actually am really fastidious about checking myself, and super sensitive of things crawling on my skin and hair. i do not have any rashes or abnormal joint pain (55yrsold). And I started to come down with this by Sunday evening, which I would think would be alittle quick to develop. But, you have pricked my alert system and I will follow through on that. Thank You again.

Good for you Coach. :)
We have been without TV at home for almost that long. I do have a TV in my office that I watch the MLB Network sometimes. My 13 year old has learned a lot about business during the last two off seasons (contracts, arbitration, unions, trades, etc.). Also watch Duck Dynasty marathons since I mentoring students doing a project for them.

Area Man Constantly Mentioning He Doesn't Own A Television

http://www.theonion.com/articles/area-man-constantly-mentioning-he-doesnt-own-a-tel,429/

CHAPEL HILL, NC–Area resident Jonathan Green does not own a television, a fact he repeatedly points out to friends, family, and coworkers–as well as to his mailman, neighborhood convenience-store clerks, and the man who cleans the hallways in his apartment building.
http://o.onionstatic.com/images/articles/article/429/onion_news1069_jpg_250x1000_q85.jpgJonathan Green, who tells as many people as possible that he is "fully weaned off the glass teat."
"I, personally, would rather spend my time doing something useful than watch television," Green told a random woman Monday at the Suds 'N' Duds Laundromat, noticing the establishment's wall-mounted TV. "I don't even own one."
According to Melinda Elkins, a coworker of Green's at The Frame Job, a Chapel Hill picture-frame shop, Green steers the conversation toward television whenever possible, just so he can mention not owning one.
"A few days ago, [store manager] Annette [Haig] was saying her new contacts were bothering her," Elkins said. "The second she said that, I knew Jonathan would pounce. He was like, 'I didn't know you had contacts, Annette. Are your eyes bad? That a shame. I'm really lucky to have almost perfect vision. I'm guessing it's because I don't watch TV. In fact, I don't even own one."
According to Elkins, "idiot box" is Green's favorite derogatory term for television.
"He uses that one a lot," she said. "But he's got other ones, too, like 'boob tube' and 'electronic babysitter.'"
Elkins said Green always makes sure to read the copies of Entertainment Weekly and Peoplelying around the shop's break room, "just so he can point out all the stars and shows he's never heard of."
"Last week, in one of the magazines, there was a picture of Calista Flockhart," Elkins said, "and Jonathan announced, 'I have absolutely no idea who this woman is. Calista who? Am I supposed to have heard of her? I'm sorry, but I haven't.'"
Tony Gerela, who lives in the apartment directly below Green's and occasionally chats with the 37-year-old by the mailboxes, is well aware of his neighbor's disdain for television.
"About a week after I met him, we were talking, and I made some kind of Simpsons reference," Gerela said. "He asked me what I was talking about, and when I told him it was from a TV show, he just went off, saying how the last show he watched was some episode of Cheers, and even then, he could only watch for about two minutes before having to shut it off because it insulted his intelligence so terribly."
Added Gerela: "Once, I made the mistake of saying I saw something on the news, and he started in with, 'Saw the news? I don't know about you, but I read the news."
Green has lived without television since 1989, when his then-girlfriend moved out and took her set with her.
"When Claudia went, the TV went with her," Green said. "But instead of just going out and buying another one–which I certainly could have afforded, that wasn't the issue–I decided to stand up to the glass teat."
"I'm not an elitist," Green said. "It's just that I'd much rather sculpt or write in my journal or read Proust than sit there passively staring at some phosphorescent screen."
"If I need a fix of passive audio-visual stimulation, I'll go to catch a Bergman or Truffaut film down at the university," Green said. "I certainly wouldn't waste my time watching the so-called Learning Channel or, God forbid, any of the mind sewage the major networks pump out."
Continued Green: "People don't realize just how much time their TV-watching habit–or, shall I say, addiction–eats up. Four hours of television a day, over the course of a month, adds up to 120 hours. That's five entire days! Why not spend that time living your own life, instead of watching fictional people live theirs? I can't begin to tell you how happy I am not to own a television."

I was out (fill in outdoor activity) and I noticed (fill in destructive behavior that 99% of the planet would agree was wrong). Should I start another thread to discuss the moral implications of said act? Should I debate the merits of forgiveness, proclaim my disdain and superiority, and/or bash opposing views? Should I climb inside the brain of the perpetrator (even though I don't know who it was) and discern the thoughts and intents of their heart? Should I be surprised by any of this? Should I just stay away from such threads?

Okay serious question. All are welcome to answer. I especially want HB's opinion. Hence the posting of it here. i am trying to calculate food weights per day for Maine trip. I have heard many say numbers from 1.5 to 2.5 lbs/day. I typically eat 2 plain (the contents only weigh 1oz) packages of oatmeal every day for breakfast while at home. Ya, I know... boring. I am a creature of habit, patterns, order, and structure. I don't like variables. For the trail I am planning 4 packages of oatmeal for breakfast, 2 poptarts for 2nd breakfast (sorry, Hobbit joke), gorp (macadamia nuts, brazil nuts, and M&M's) for trail, granola bar for afternoon treat, and 4 servings of Knorr's Mac&Cheese for supper. After repackaging all of this comes to 1.5lbs/day. And finally the questions: Is this enough? What is your typical day's food. I will be cozy cooking.

I hiked last weekend over a good sized hill in the Belgrade Lakes region with 29lbs. The pack felt very good. Hardly noticed it there. That weight disappeared. I would forget that I was carrying it. This weight is another story. No. I always knew this was there.

1.5 is sufficient. You are right with the 1.5 - 2.5 average. All depends on terrain, weather, mileage & duration. Starting out your body will not be starving for food like a thru-hiker is after a month on the trail. You are going in summer so you won't be needing extra calories for the cold.

BB, I would strongly recommend mixing in some variety there. Oatmeal every morning and especially Mac & Cheese is going to get old everyday. And if you do eat oatmeal for breakfast every morning and want to take that instead of grits or something else, try eating something different at home the week or so before you go.

I love oatmeal for breakfast when hiking. Great weight - calorie ratio, easy prep. I use quick cook & add to it for variety. I eat it almost every day on the trail. Lunches: Crackers, bagels, tortilla w/creamed cheese, hard cheeses, Peanut butter, summer sausage, pepperoni, tuna, salmon, canned meat spreads. Snacks: gorp, snickers, dried fruits. Dinners: Mac & Cheese, Knorr noodles or rice. I will try & carry some FD veggies & add meats if I feel really hungry or tired. I will carry some deserts if hiking with others. Pudding is easy to make in a nalgene. Or a mock cobler with FB cooking. Just use your choice of FD fruit, sugar & bread crumbs.

Normal is the operative word. When it comes to food (and a few of other things) I am far from normal. You are talking to a person who ate a ham, cheese, pickle, and lettuce double-decker sandwich for lunch for 3 years straight. Fortunately I have a normal brother-in-law that is hiking with me that is dehydrating a variety of meals for our trip. The things I listed were test items. I think my meals will be the same for the entire trip except for the suppers he is planning. Variety is not a big deal for me. I could eat the same daily menu for years before it would bother me. My wife dictates otherwise and I am fine with that too. When I was single I ate cold ravioli out of a can for supper for months. It is an OCD thing. I would be in 7th heaven if I could walk every room in my house in 4 steps at a time for the rest of my life.

We have a May tradition here in the South that has gone by the wayside with the younger generation that I fondly remember as a child. It's called Decoration Day which may take place the Sunday before Mother's Day or Mother's Day itself. Just depends on your Churches preference. It's where everbody gathers at the graveyard to decorate. When I was a child it was an all day affair starting mid-morning with people bringing dishes that were set up at outside tables or a pavilion. It lasted till mid-afternoon. It was somewhat of a large family/friends reunion. Now it's just a couple of hours of old timers talking. Sad. It was a good thing. Now I guess we can just text pictures.

Okay serious question. All are welcome to answer. I typically eat 2 plain (the contents only weigh 1oz) packages of oatmeal every day for breakfast while at home. Ya, I know... boring. I am a creature of habit, patterns, order, and structure. I don't like variables. For the trail I am planning 4 packages of oatmeal for breakfast,
My suggestion is to take along and add some cinnamon to your oatmeal. It aids digestion, while also enhancing the flavor IMHO. I also add walnuts and powdered milk to make my breakfasts a very complete protein.

That is similar to my brother-in-law's take. If I did that, it would be Nido.

That's it, that's the word I was lookin for...disappeared...that's what it felt like to me too...I forgot I was carrying a pack...then I remembered I was, but then it went away again, hehe
I was walking along one time and realized I couldn't feel my pack. Had to walk back over a mile to get it where I took my last break.

we dont have to.
Some of us elderly will probably die commenting on white blaze. Probably not a bad way to go.

I will be cozy cooking.
its a good start. bring snacks, lots of snacks.cracker/peanut butter,crackers/cheese,cheese, peanut butter, nutella.in my gorp i used almond joy pieces instead of m&ms. i felt better hiking when i snacked throughout the day.not sure what you're entertaining for protein in your dinners-tuna packets, microwave bacon, summer sausage, pepperoni, spam singles.
i brought instant oatmeal, but emptied all the packets into one freezer bag so that i could control portions(never got tired of brown sugar/cinnamon oatmeal or poptarts.)some mornings i didnt cook, just hit the trail and had brunch an hour or so up the trail.

most mornings i had coffee oatmeal and poptarts, snacks all day long, and either mtn house meal or knorrs sides or mashed potatoes w/cheese, jerky, bacon ,tuna,or spam.after the 3rd week, i was always hungry.
some mornings i would just make an iced mocha frappacino with coffee, hot chocolate, nido, and water, hit the road, and not have breakfast for an hour or so.

In Alabama lunch is called dinner. You eat breakfast, dinner, and supper. At work everybody goes and has dinner, asks you what are you having for dinner. But that's at yankee lunch time.

Here in Virginia where I'm at, it's breakfast, lunch and supper/dinner. Supper and dinner are the same.

5.4 miles with 44lbs = 1 hour 40 minute walk. But BirdBrain, why would you carry so much weight? Because it feels so good when I put it down.

My 5.8 took 2 hrs. 18 min. with about 15 lbs.

My 5.8 took 2 hrs. 18 min. with about 15 lbs.

Were you on a paved bike path with only moderate hills? It is likely your terrain was a bit more aggressive. My walk was only a test of the weight, not a true hike. I was not trying for speed. That is just where it ended up. I was surprised at the pace. I thought the weight was dragging me down a bit. I learned what I wanted to. The pack weight is doable. My feet were a little hot by the end and my torso was complaining. Legs were fine. I still need to shed some pounds off me. If I am able to, I should be fine.

When I was a kid growing up in Lacey Springs, I still remember Sunday dinner. Kept calling it that all the way through college. And I was referring to lunch. One of my friends from Floriday swore by it. Said dinner was what you had at midday and supper was what you had at night.

Of course, now everyone here just calls it lunch.

Speaking of supper...just polished off a couple pulled pork sandwiches hot off the smoker at 4:00am this morning. Mmmmmmm. The rest is getting frozen for my Wood Badge patrol this weekend. We're eatin' supper in style! :D

Breakfast, lunch and supper. Dinner on Sundays, Holidays, and restaurants. (and grits are NEVER involved!) My hubby, bless his heart, ;) calls lunch- dinner, and supper- dinner. After 30 years, I still have to ask him which he means.

I don't think it is so much as where you're from as it is your family's interpretation. Although it does seem the midday dinner term is more prevalent in the South and especially the Deep South.

I am noticing a culture thing here. In Maine our meals are breakfast, lunch, and supper. Dinner is something you eat at a restaurant. As in, I plan to go out to dinner tonight. In between the meals are snacks. and grits are never involved

When talking to people from different places I try to avoid the word dinner, because some consider it the noon meal, others the evening. Lunch and Supper usually are not confused.

Dinner bucket? Is that like a doggie bag?

No, it is a lunch pail.

You mean sorta' like lunch pails? We have those up here. All kidding aside, you cannot beat the southern hospitality when it comes to cooking. Just go hungry and visit just 3 places a day or some host is likely to start crying because you didn't eat enough.

A top past time of southerners (especially the women who cook) is watching their company eat.

That would also be the trait of an I-talian Grandmother!:D

Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
BB Re food needs.
I find that while average food weights are good in theory, it all gets screwed up on the trail.
The first two or three days on a trail I hardly eat. For a one week hike it's only the last two or three days that you need a lot of food. (and you've usually already eaten the stuff you like)

Oz, wow, you mean reality of the trail is different then the theory we find on WB? ;)

with all the time you spend in motel rooms, did he have to replace his slippers?

When I was a kid growing up in Lacey Springs, I still remember Sunday dinner. Kept calling it that all the way through college. And I was referring to lunch. One of my friends from Floriday swore by it. Said dinner was what you had at midday and supper was what you had at night.

Of course, now everyone here just calls it lunch.

Speaking of supper...just polished off a couple pulled pork sandwiches hot off the smoker at 4:00am this morning. Mmmmmmm. The rest is getting frozen for my Wood Badge patrol this weekend. We're eatin' supper in style! :D

Growing up once a month at church we would have "dinner on the ground". Most probably call it a potluck now.

I'm jealous. I don't look that good when I sweat :p

TW, That gave me flashback to the story about how you got your trail name. :D

Coach, and they can really cook too! I was lucky growing up in the South (both my mom and dad were great cooks) and my oldest sister's mother-in-law was Italian. So from about 9 years old on I enjoyed many of her awesome meals also!

I'm glad I brought some winter gear. I'm off tomorrow and will be going hiking. The plan is to do 8 miles on Lafayette and Lincoln. The weather at 5200' is calling for 25 degrees and 30 mph winds. Hikerboy knows me well enough to know that means shorts and a long sleeve shirt while hiking and I will probably complain that it's hot. I will have full winter gear in my pack.

http://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Mount-Lafayette/forecasts/1603 - I love this website for forecasts. So far it has been fairly close. I typed the wind speed wrong the first time. It's 30 mph which means I may keep the legs on my pants.
