When is your projected date for starting at Springer? you probably mentioned it somewhere before, but I'm too lazy to look.
Late March.
Plan is to start and get to Walasi-Yi before Good Friday to avoid weekend issues there. Probaably try to get there Wed night so leave Amicola about Sun/Mon which ties in with 2 night stay at Hiker Inn after about 2 days in Atlanta organising bump box, phones/tabs whatever and last minute gear purchase (have a couple of items cheaper over there and not worth paying postage on, e.g water filter/purifier, small Leatherman, rain jacket).

I know what you mean, though. I have a shelf full of AT books. You'd think after you read one or two different descriptions of someone's night at the same shelter, or stay in the same town, that it would get kind of old. But it doesn't, at least for me.
The data book is pretty dry reading, though. The plot is very predictable ;)

Not sure what kind of person George is but he writes a very readable journal.
And although didn't make it as a thru hike, Mrs Joy's TrailJournal of 2010 also rates. Only journal my non (long distance) hiking wife read avidly.

Due to my choice of reading material in my youth I learnt your meaning before his so I know where you're coming from. Despite my dutch heritage having his meaning in that language.
Another one that gets us laughing is root. You guys root for your team. Here that would basically be Debbie does the Dallas cowboys.....

In my youth I worked in a bank.
A US ship came into port for R & R.
A group came in and changed money with me.
Some of them started a conversation with the typist (it was a long time ago) alongside me.
One asked her how many pitchers of beer he could get with the Aus dollars he had.
She tried to tell him that we call pitchers jugs here.
He leaned over, cupped both her breasts and said these are jugs.
She nearly died of embarrassment on the spot and I probably got my best memory in 3 years of working there....:banana

Regarding language, I was surprised to learn that "shagging", which is a dance style made popular in the Myrtle Beach / Carolinas area here, has a VERY different meaning across the ocean.

Maybe you should try an internet search on "strine".
This is basically a corruption of the word Australian and is used to describe the idiosyncracies of our language.
Our Prime Minister has a very strine accent....
She is also recently getting bad press here because of the misdemeanours of someone she "shagged" in her youth.:)

I don't have an accent.
I'm born here but parents came from Friesland in the north of the Netherlands.
My Dutch is fair but definitely not fluent.
Went there in 1998.
Threw the locals a bit (they all speak better English than my Dutch and probably my English).
When I spoke English they picked me as an Aussie no problem.
Despite the poor command of it they picked me as a northerner when I spoke Dutch.
The milk tongue wins in the end....

I probably contributed my share of silliness as well. But my understanding of the cafe was that it was a pseudo chat room, in the humor forum. and not a go-to source for sober and reliable information anyway. I remove the silly hat (mostly) if I go post on the other threads.

Been busy this week dealing with a brand new Health department code that started on September 1st for North Carolina. It's so new that even the health inspectors are confused. The health inspectors got their 605 page regulation book in mid August and are supposed to be experts in two weeks. It's a good plan that allows Medium Rare burgers. Before September 1st each cook was personally liable for damages from an under-cooked burger because you can't get insurance to cover damages from an illegal act. The only down side to the new rules is it's going to cost the average restaurant $12k+ to replace some refrigerators to go from 42 degrees to 40 degrees.

No! I think legally I could serve raw chicken if you requested it and I have a written warning on the menu. Of course there is no way in hell I would do that, but I could. I get my culinary Italian and my culinary French mixed up. To many one letter changes for me.

For Italian, just pronounce every syllable and add emphasis to the the vowels, it will be good enough to fool most people. :D

I meen written. Pronouncing is much easier. French just run away from the last letter.

Oz definitely doesn't want light beer!
But I think we could develop a brand with a full lager, a light for the easily light headed and a stout to rival Guinness.
Just might need to start with one and let the real brewers among us work out the details.

We could market the stout as the summit of beers for those that have thru(cyber) hiked, the lager for the calories on the way and the light for those who prefer the "Ray way".:D

Elf:

Greylock's the best hiking on the A.T. corridor in Mass, imo, pretty much in the state, with the southwestern corner a close second and the Mounts Tom and Holyoke areas the best I've seen outside Berkshire County. The stretch on the A.T. from Mark Noepel spur trail to Wilbur Money Brook Trail, for the most part, is amazing, especially along Saddleball's ridgeline down towards the col between it and Greylock. I still haven't done the north side of the formation up Prospect from Rt. 2. Might just go do that this weekend.

We are home. The rain never stopped on top of Greylock, the Ranger wasn't too keen on us staying up there with the tornado watches. HBs and Driver 8s warnings of Tornado watches and looking at the weather map at the lodge desk did not look to hot for the rest of the day. I do love wild weather in the mountains, but the wife was with me...........I'd like to keep her around for awhile. Maybe, get out and dayhike tommorrow.

Very cool, I remember that the view from the cobbles on North Mtn(?) just south of Cheshire was amazing.

According to my guidebook, there is parking on rte 8 south of Greylock and again on Pattison road on the north side, do you happen to know of it is safe to leave cars at these spots overnight?

Driver8
09-08-2012, 23:23
Word is, Elf, that Pattinson is fine, as is Greylock Community Club, which IIRC is like 0.1 east of the A.T. on Rt. 2. I don't know about the parking space on Rt. 8 in Cheshire, but I'd bet it's fine. I parked on Outlook Ave just west of Cheshire when I did an A.T. there-and-back to the Saddle Ball summit last fall. Had no problem there - it's billed in the guidebooks as having no parking, but it's clear that people park there more than a little - right next to Reynolds Rock. Anyhow, I'd bet Rt. 8 in Cheshire is fine, as would be parking in the middle of town in Cheshire. I hope one of the western Mass regulars here can chime in helpfully on this.

Yeah, from the weather radar, it looks like this system is moving much more slowly than predicted and Greylock is still getting the what-for from it.

I'm gonna head up and do the Falling Waters-Lincoln-Lafayette Loop tomorrow, I think. Reckon FW will be fun with all the new rainfall and there will be the early hints of fall foliage, plus the hut will still be open. Win-win-win. Call me early in the AM if you want to join me - two cars would allow us to do a longer traverse - maybe AT from the Notch up across to Lafayette and down via Greenleaf Trail. Call me anytime - lv msg if I don't pick up. Will call back asap. Hitting the sack now, intend to get an early start tomorrow.
