I'm glad I brought some winter gear. I'm off tomorrow and will be going hiking. The plan is to do 8 miles on Lafayette and Lincoln. The weather at 5200' is calling for 25 degrees and 30 mph winds. Hikerboy knows me well enough to know that means shorts and a long sleeve shirt while hiking and I will probably complain that it's hot. I will have full winter gear in my pack.cool, have a good hike Rasty.

I never understand while peeps ask if they should bring gloves, hats, or rain pants on early spring starts on the AT...like somehow the weather is supposed to know it's spring and not to precipitate and Mr. N.Wind should not blow.....I learned in cub scouts...be prepared.

42 kilometers

48.3 kmph.

That's an awesome hike, Rasty. I did it September 9 on a perfect day. One of the prettiest places in the northeast. If time permits, you might consider doing a fuller Franconia Ridge traverse, ascending via Flume Slide Trail, crossing via Franconia Ridge, and descending the Old Bridle Path, with a couple miles walk back to your car on the bike path. Flume Slide's notoriously difficult, but no harder, I'd reckon, than the ascent you did off-trail in Tuckerman Ravine, though being shaded Flume would be snowier and maybe icy in some places.

Once you've done Franconia and Washington, I strongly recommend, based on what I've read and heard, not on direct experience, that you consider a Twins-Bonds Hike/Traverse, with a stay-over at Guyot campsite. The sunsets from West Bond and Bondcliff are legendary. I hope to do some variation of that hike myself this summer.

A way you could do it to maximize your hike would be to ascend Garfield, tap it, cross to Galehead and tap it, ascend South Twin, pop north to North Twin and back, wend over to Guyot, then do the Bonds afterward (legendary sunsets). From there, you could hit Zealand and see the falls near the hut, and, depending on time and legs and weather, etc., cross over, do Field, Willey and Tom, descending to Crawford Notch at the Highland Center and getting a ride from there to place of beginning. That would be 10 4000-footers and some of the best hiking in the northeast.

Looks like PCT just so of Sonora pass when I did it. Trail was gone! Obliterated by winter snow. I could see in the valley below where I had to go & figured my route via my map. As situation was a bit tenuous crossing snow bridges along a steam in this ravine I kept hearing voices. Thought my mind was playing games with me untill climbing out of it I came to a campsite of a few other hikers.

ok clearly I didn't scroll back far enough yesterday...how did I mis this. Hiker mom, and hiker moms daughter...really nice photo, and congrats that's really awesome!

Ahhh now it makes sense. Your avatar always seemed to be going somewhere, figured you must be trail running. And that green shirt, is that the same one in the picture? Congrats on your 5k. They are so much fun.

Yes, that's the same green shirt! Gallop for the Greenway is the name of the 5k. The new shirts this year, for the same race, are navy blue but the sizes this year were wayyy off. They were HUGE so we couldn't wear them! :( I had a really great time... thanks FC!

Yo Rasty, did you hike today? I didnt see the register at Greenleaf. Anyway, let me know how much longer you are up. We have a hiking gig at the local theater, Red River in Concord on Friday if you wanna come watch the Nat Geo movie and participate in our panel talk. Would be great to have some seasoned hikers in the crowd. We could go have a beer after.

I did a lot of hiking today!

1st - Lincoln & Lafayette counterclockwise. Amazing hike.

2nd - Chocorua up the Falls trail from route 112. The last 3/4 mile is really cool.

Total of 16 miles today and just made my 6 pm meeting in Manchester.

I think I need to do a formal poll.

I think it depends on what you prefer - grand views or challenging climbs. Personally, come to think of it, if I'm you, and I'm adding a few days on, I'd consider heading up to Baxter now that you've gotten a taste of the Whites. Or over to Mansfield/Camel's Hump or the Adirondacks. Or the Bigelows in Maine.

Based on your demonstrated hiking capabilities, I'd say you could have fun in a day doing the Moosilauke N-S A-T traverse up past the falls, if you can get someone to spot a car with you (Chaco comes to mind - I'd bet you and he have similar pace), then head over and do a Carter Dome loop, up via the Notch, taking in the views from Mt. Hight (a shoulder of the Dome with renowned views). That would, on a clear day, give you the grand southwestern and northeastern views into and out of the Whites, to go with what you've done already. Come to think of it, morning in the Carters and evening at Moosilauke would be pretty special.

HB, "real estate"? You sound like you are ready to buy it. ;)

How about a 30 month lease at 3.9% and no money down. Uncle Sam will throw in some undercoating.

I'm trusting Chaco for the time because I wasn't wearing a watch.
I saw someone in front of me as I came out to treeline, it could have been you I saw walking down the other side of Lincoln from the lower part of Falling Waters. I could see the ridge on the other side a little when I came out and noticed someone going down Lincoln

What time did you start yesterday?

What will the ALT 42 get you?? ( I have a Mac, so I can't figure it out)

Alt 42 gets you an assterisk *. Spelling was never my strong suit.

The Sharpie is mightier than the gun with no bullets!
