It seems the screaming monkeys should take lessons from their cousins, the flying monkeys. Is there a window available? Maybe the monkey needs to be set loose to return to the wild. Just tell your coworker that Curious George said he wanted to go on a trek to find the Man With The Yellow Hat. :)

I have to sleep now but I will just say that I am sharing it with many.
The numbers out here are still large and actually quite depressing.

There must be still over 1500 thruhiking from the samples I see.

id be surprised if the actual number was 1/3 of that.really, oz how many samples are you seeing?i had heard that 3/4 of the people that started around our time or earlier had dropped out before damascus. 30 in one hostel, but how many hostels in a town?how many people are you seeing in a town in any given day? not to mention i know the weather has kept some off the trail, and some are zeroing until after trail days so i think your seeing an exaggerated bubble.
i heard from starface today, they did 36 miles yesterday, and theyre waiting for their ride to damascus, zeroing until they return.
i think theres more like 500 on the trail right now.
or are you thinking 1500 people metric?

I have been slow to comment on the tragedy. It goes without saying that we all ache for the injured. The heart yearns helplessly for words or actions that could somehow ebb the pain and chaos or turn back the clock to warn. My warped mind goes to a different and inescapable end: If we live long enough, we will become the octogenarian that believes we ought to be the one to decide if we are capable to drive. We will not want the Solomon that tells us we must stop. We can declare rhetoric in unison in the middle of the emotion, but alone in our rocking chair we will feel different.

All of this is fact, but likely misplaced blather. My heart and prayers are with the innocent too. I, however, am not mad at the driver (as some blogs have been), for I know that unless an authority or mortality intervenes, I will run an increasingly higher risk, day by day, of being that driver.

I have a similar lack of planning. Mine includes a long life, but with no plan for growing up or old.

i found that on the trail as well as off, the best plan is to have no plan at all.

I preferred Paul and George over Richard and John. Still, that remains one of my favorite and oft quoted lines. Very profound and true.

Whats the best 30 miles in the White mountains? Loop or AMC shuttle.
theres a couple of different loops you could do in the pemi, franconia ridge to garfield ridge, then over the bonds and back up thoreau falls trail to ethan pond.its tough to say whats the best 30 miles in the whites, theres so many great places. north of adams and madison, the trails are spectacular and the rmc sites make it easy to explore for a few days. kings ravine trail, castle ravine trail, great gully trail, amphibranch.rmc maintains 100 trails in the area.

not really.the grafton loop trail is adjacent to the mahoosucs, and i really loved it when i hiked it a few years ago, but youd miss the notorious notch, as well as some crazy great scrambles.very few loop options

AK had a very concise answer to the tick question thread. My hiking partner has informed me that he will not be helping me look for ticks.

And on another note: Given the color of my hair, I would be described as elderly at a quick glance. I don't think I am elderly yet.

I have heard that from people that grew up. That was enough to scare me out of trying to grow up. I sometimes make bad 1st impressions. In those instances I try to grown on people. On the trail, I try to keep things from growing under me. Especially ticks.

So...You grow on people - Like mold? And you have things (ticks) growing under you? Are you some sort of hiker, or something? Maybe you should bathe a bit more... That might help with the first impressions. :)

I can't contribute to the thru weight thread. I am only doing Maine. I declare here that my base weight going into the 100-mile wilderness is currently at 25lbs. I am splitting grams at this point and don't see it going lower. After food and water it is currently at "are you kidding me".
