Yeah, the fog gave it a different look I guess. I stayed there a while hoping the fog would lift but decided I couldn't wait that long and moved on.

Prettiest black eye I've ever seen :)

Took a line drive to the temple last night, no black eye, but it hurts. Knocked me to the ground, but not out. Coaches on my son's travel team include a Doctor, University Sports Trainer, and Pharmacist. They checked it out, had me put ice on it and said any issues go to ER and have cat scan, and told me to have wife wake me up every couple of hours during the night to make sure I was still coherent. Still dull pain, but should be OK.

Better! Last month was a ruff one. just getting over the knee & got tendinitis in my elbow from chopping ice to make room for an incoming storm. Just as that healed gout set in my other ankle. Thankfully feeling alright now other than a little sore from salvaging some stuff from store next door that is being demolished. To long with no exercise. That is changing. Need to be up to 20+ mile days by Sept. when I get to take my extended vacation.

MM, and such are the trials of growing old. But at least you already have a life full of more adventures than most of us dream about. Here is to you being able to work through all this and get back in the condition you want to be. :)

It was not bleeding like one I had in the past, which I thought was good. But then the Doctor (coach) says actually this was the worst part of the head where skull does not provide as much protection, and the real concern is the internal bleeding.

Cool...your ready! you worked hard at learning and assembling, it hasn't gone unnoticed, you asked some great questions that I happened to benefit from. Most of my time spent here at WB is spent lurking and learning from others, not asking the next right thing...so thank you for that.

Can anyone recommend a ultra-mega-nano-neo-superduper-lightweight system to hang 42 chicken ankles?

August holds the best weather along the big lake. That being said, the nights are almost always very cool. Days are normally in the mid 70's. Night time temps. in the low 40's are common. Also make a plan for carrying x-tra water for camp- some areas are dry with no access to the lake due to cliffs. ENJOY!!!!

Okay... now for a cheese tip. I have been studying the best way to take protein on my hike. This is because of a passing question and comment from HB.

A little aside on that first: I have noticed that HB rarely says things in a forceful manner. He says many things, that ought to be listened to, in a matter of fact way and then moves on. I have learned to stop and consider his words a bit more as time has passed. This issue is one such case.

Back to the cheese and protein. My research has revealed that cheese is a major source for protein for AT hikers. This was a surprise to me. I expected jerky and pepperoni and the like to be the primary sources. After looking into cheese, I found something that surprised me further. There is one type of cheese that stands head and shoulders above the rest (this proclamation will like produce welcome rebuttals). Most cheeses hover in the 4-6 grams of protein per oz range. Parmesan is at 9 grams per oz. That is about 20% of your RDA for protein in 1oz. Of the Parmesans, Parmigiano Reggiano stands at the top. It has the best numbers (low salt is important to me) of the Parmesans and it melts in your mouth.

I toyed with the idea of taking the Laughing Cow cheeses. The fire starters are a neat idea. I thought the Parmesan cheese taste would get old after a few days, but the real stuff is incredible in numbers and in taste. Next step is to find it for less that $20 per pound.

I would have to repackage them in Saran Wrap to save a gram :). Most "normal" people would choose your simple solution or one like it. Us people with OCD like to do things the hard way.

To continue to sing the praises of the Parmigiano Reggiano, it has 50% more protein per oz than the slimjim. I would never have believed this.

We will be drying our own jerky to cut down on salt.

Of the Parmesans it seems to be the lowest.

It may be my store. The one I bought last night had 180 mg of sodium compared to about 500 for the Parmesans.

Hi HM!
We're interested in slacking Sunday.
Boys took a vote over pizza and we're looking at zeroing tomorrow (surprise!) but I can't speak for all of us until morning.
We're in Howard Johnsons.
I put my foot down and got a room on my own and they are both asleep next door while I mellow watching baseball and fighting the 1 hour timeout on the internet here.
How's the shiner coming on?

Tonight's a bit late HM, but tomorrow for sure.
I would think we're up before 9. After midnight start this morning all normal sleep times are subject to variation,so there is some extra built into that.
I'll PM you my number.
I think I have yours in my PM's or emails so I may text it to you.

MM, and such are the trials of growing old. But at least you already have a life full of more adventures than most of us dream about. Here is to you being able to work through all this and get back in the condition you want to be. :)
Growing up is an option, older is not. I've hiked with several elderly people whom I aspire to emulate. My work life has taken a dramatic change in the last year. I know I need to replace the weekly work out I used to get from shows that I no longer get. It's nice to know that working with my brain is an option, but I need to keep in shape for the physical work. Damn, I may have to pay & join a gym for all the stuff work used to do for me!

Hi HM glad you enjoyed your hike despite being cut short. As I grow older & hopefully wiser I go for quality over quantity. Even on PCT I started to sway this was. Did a zero on the trail when weather fogged us in. It was just to beautiful to hike & not see the views. Food forced us move on in one limited view day. We shared what we had left in our food bags for dinner. Same Mashed taters, TVP & dehydrated green beans mixed together. Breakfast was a pack of pudding & shared snickers bar. But when I opened my tent in the morning it was worth it. Michele heard my zipper & asked if there was a view. My response was OMG! I was right below MT Jefferson in OR with the morning sun reflecting of it's glaciers & snow fields! Totally worth it!

When doing that section on my thru it sounded like fall as I crunched through all the fallen leaves. It sucked since it was early JUly & the bad drought of 88 was causing them to fall of the trees. The green tunnel was no more in the heat of summer. It was so bad a ranger even night hiked in a mile from where he could drive to because he thought he saw a campfire where I was camped from down in the valley below. Only thing I could think of was he looked up as I was priming my stove. Was reading by candle lantern at the time & after a quick look around he could see I had no fire. Just a good ranger looking out for the woods. Had a nice chat with him about water sources up ahead.

The Lyme in CT is the one that the disease was named for, more importantly the disease is called "Lyme" disease, I just enjoy proper terminology (and being snarky :D) I also get annoyed when professional reporters constantly refer to gun magazines as "clips" and when I was younger I couldn't stand being called a kid ("kids" are baby goats)...but I digress...

Just being Snarky too. After spending 14 years on Nantucket Island I was well aware of the disease even before it became as widespread as it is today. It still has one of the highest per capita rate of the disease.

Some of my fondest memories of camping & hiking have been in the rain. One time coming back from a scout/OA regional meeting my friend asked what I had planned for rest of the weekend, when I said nothing he suggested going camping. A few hours later he was hunched over blocking the rain as I kindled a fire. Another time as I "guided" some friends new to backpacking it rained the entire weekend. The trail was more of a stream on the way out.

When I was on my thru in the Mahosucs I ran into a couple I hadn't seen since Damascus. We hit the early rain, snow in the Smokies & one horrendous thunderstorm on Roan we watched rolling in, down south. Next day we wake up to rain. Earthdog & I start this mock argument about who is the bad omen & how nice the weather it was when we were apart. As I watch them take this giant step down off a boulder then streatch to reach the side of this huge puddle I say, "we are doing this all wrong, we are going to be wet at the end of the day. We should do it like this!" & jump off the 5' drop into the middle of the puddle & stomp my way out. Earthdog likes my idea & climbs back up to do it. Rest of the day we were like little kids (sorry Elf) & stomped our way through every puddle laughing & having a great time!

I love the rain. I do not mind it at all. I fish in the rain all the time. The only thing I don't like about the rain is it spoils the view and can make you cold if it is cool and windy.

Today he told me if not for me staying the winter & my patience with the slow progress we have made he doubts he would have had the will to go on after the loss of his long time girlfriend/companion. Of all the things I have done in my life, even when I worked commercial properties worth over 50 Million & turned tenants around from a hate to love relationships doesn't compare to how I felt today! Still the same basic principal. I am here to fix it & fix it right. I could make more driving rig, or using any other of my skills. I feel I have found a home helping rebuild my friends business. There have been points in my life where I had more money than I could spend. I spent most of it on whiskey & women, rest I just wasted. Now I take pride in rebuilding & creating.

MM - YOU are a really bad influence!!! Thank you for that! :)

It has been raining for a few days and there are some really respectable puddles out there right now. Woke up this morning and had the brilliant idea to take the dogs puddle stomping today. I am pretty sure they thought I had lost my mind, but they soon joined in. One of the dogs (Jolly) even treated the bigger puddles like her own dock diving pool. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time! The pooches are now passed-out, with huge puppy grins on their faces. It was a great way to spend the day!

Thanks for putting the puddle stomping idea in my head. I am definitely going to have to do that more often. :)

I've more than once said to Shellie when we go to Walmart or somewhere and everybody is jockeying for a close parking spot to just park way out and let the young ones have the close ones, they're older than us.

MM, that reminds me of when my little brother asked my dad why he didn't jog like our neighbor (a dentist), my dad who was a general contractor (but still did lots of carpentry and other work) responded that he didn't need to because he "worked for a living". :)

With tourist coming into town my boss & I have started to hang out in the store after work, have a cocktail & BS. Mostly about work, but social too. Money is meager until we rebuild. I am willing to wait & share in the regrowth. To have my friend say he's not sure he would be alive today if not for my friendship...PRICELESS!

I was that way in my early 20s. Thankfully, I outgrew the nasty "growing up" habit! I have noticed that each year more and more people who are physically younger than I am, are acting more "life weary." I hope I don't hit that until I am in my 90s! My grandmother claimed she was finally middle-aged when she turned 90.

HM, try to find out what Oz's best estimate is for the Lynchburg area and also the Shenandoah aqua-blaze section. I hear the river calling :)

TW, they were looking for a fourth, so I had already recommended you. Hopefully it will work out. :)

Coach Lou, Rocket Socks, Cricket, and Goody! I just got home and the wife is mowing the lawn, got the funk off and elevated the barking dogs... Great AT 28 Miler! Now we know PA rocks are not as bad as NJ!

Taking her out to dinner to make up!

Oh that was the best, between his true love of conversation about food, women in his life, and cheesecake, he apologized to the group over and over again for not bringing his cheesecake,,,,

On the second night I presented him with a Coleman's Blueberry Lemon Cheese cake cold mix - the look on his face was priceless! Its all good he loves to eat, and be merry!

That it great to see the real person is consistent with the online impression you get here in the Cafe.

Well said! The first night that I met him we shared a campsite. The next morning we spent hours talking, BSing and drinking coffee (VIA of course), it was like we'd known each other for years and were just catching up.
