Years later I found out the human involvement when I helped the caretaker at Garfield shelter. We shot the **** as we mixed it. Turns out I hiked with his gran parents when I thrued & had some great pics of them. Mixing the excrement was just as memorable when I think of hikers that complain about charging for sites. I have dealt with sewage lines in the city & they are far easier to face than a composted toilet on the AT. Caretakers have to mix proper amounts of wood chips into the maggot infested waste. Kuddos to them for what they do!!!

I have decided to do the Pemi Loop from the Lincoln Woods Trailhead. The logistics of making either a 35 mile hitch hike on a tight schedule just won't work for the Mahoosuc's this time. I have to catch a 7 am flight on Thursday morning so I have three free days to hike to 32 miles of the Pemi Loop.

My personal record is 17 mosquitoes inhaled in one day. Sky lakes wilderness in OR on the PCT. They were so thick that if you felt one land on you & went to swat it you usually got 2 & sometimes three. Bad area to try Avon skin so soft non deet repellent. Only time it was effective was when you got a crust of it built up thick enough they couldn't bite through it!

I've played in the Sky Lakes area and you are not kidding!!! One of the few times where a bug net over the mouth and nose would have been a good thing!

I was doing some searching in the AMC site. I read a short story about how the bears turn over rocks looking for rodents and insects. Monday morning we were coming down to DWG from the backpacker site. There was a 100 yard section that EVERY single rock, basketball size or smaller, that was moved , turned, rolled. Every one! At the time I was thinking....wow this person has a awful lot of energy to mess with all these rocks, and why would they do that???......so....now I know, and it was such a coinsidence finding out!

You don't, You use the trail to hike into great Barrington to get a pizza at Baba Louis's, ice cream at SoCo and a red eye at Fuel, then go to Gypsy Joint for a beer and to see if Jordan Weller is there playing the Turtle Song (I haven't seen him perform yet, but the food and beer is good there). Yes indeed. :) I saw it right on a side trail when we stopped for lunch. We kept looking to see if it was going to come up the hill where we were eating lunch. It didn't move for the longest time. Then, when we checked back it was gone off the trail. I spotted it off the trail but still headed up the hill where we were. It stayed still for the longest time then, it started moving sideways up the hill. It rattled it's tail 2 different times while moving. We weren't close to it at all. We couldn't figure out why it rattled. I guess it just wanted to tell us .... don't even think about messing with me!! ;)

Just before taking me to the AT to pick up again on one of my section hikes my dad had handed me a pistol to take and "protect myself against any varmints". I handed it back to him saying I was not even taking a full sized toothbrush, there is no way I was carrying that thing with me (never mind the potential legal issues). So sure enough only a few hours later what was sitting there right in front me on the trail, a rattlesnake (estimate around 6 feet). With no way around him, I had to go back down the trail out of his sight until he finally moved on.

We went to buy wedding bands this weekend. Men's white gold bands start at $1100 and are too fragile to wear while hiking or doing real work unless you're careful. Men's titanium bands start at $105 and you can use them to open beer bottles with a little practice. Titanium won, no contest...

You going to have one of those hiker weddings, like at a hut or Goose pond. Ushers in Goretex anoraks, you kids walk under crossed hikeing poles?

By total coincidence the place I'm getting married is less than 300 yard off trail in Massachusetts. I will likely take an early hike to watch the sunrise from MT. Race the morning of the wedding.

Glad you didn't have that pistol (And I'm saying that as a lifelong gun nut). No reason to shoot a rattler and in many states killing one is a serious crime. I'm glad to let the wildlife inconvenience me when they see fit.

I wouldn't have, but it is just the irony of the run in only a few hours after his offer.

Was lurking here and noticed this. I had a similar thought when I bought mine, but I heard that not all EMTs are equipped to cut titanium bands... If you smash your finger and it starts swelling and they can't get it off you lose the finger. I ended up with tungsten carbide, as it is cheaper, stronger but is easily cut with tools any EMT should have. Just a thought.

It's a little intimidating to jump in here, but you guys definitely keep me laughing when the site gets slow. :D

I got out on the trail this weekend and saw a couple thru-hikers, but I generally fight the urge to ask them a hundred questions. The only time I really stop to talk to other hikers is at night at the shelters when everybody slows down to relax a bit. I did inform a few of the copperhead I saw at Annapolis Rocks though.

The ones who don't answer to "Buddy," do answer to "Kiddo." The critters I meet on the trail have all (oddly) had the same name - "Kiddo". :)

Did the copperhead talk back? If so, what did he have to say? I would love to hear their perspective!
