After my last shakedown I was trying to improve my pillow. I had a "brain""storm" of putting my spare water container in the fleece I currently use as a pillow. I think this guy would work much better though. He looks much more soft and fluffy.

I'll bet you could take an empty one and fill it with air and put it in a fleece.

That was the thought. Great minds and all that. Trouble is I can't find it. I was going to ask my wife, but I am afraid of the rebuttal.

"Hey honey, have you seen my platypus". (Insert 1 of many obvious demeaning replies).

They found out the ATC recognizes it as an alternative route towards the 2000 miler. I'm real curious to see how it goes just for the possibility of a trip. Sounds like a lot of fun. Some say you work harder that if you just hiked. I guess it just depends. Some say it gives the legs and feet a well needed rest.

I have canoed a bit being from Maine. Longest trip I took was from the Seboomook Dam on the West Branch of the Penobscot to the Ripogenos Dam with a Lobster Lake detour. They will likely not get much better mileage (unless the current is good), but they will not be as tired.

I've done quite a bit of canoeing on my own and have over 1500 certified miles with the Boy Scouts of America with the longest trip being 115 miles over 4 days on the Rifle River in Michigan. Many, many 25 and 50 milers. Lots and lots of trips in FL. Would definitely like to do the one they are gonna do or at least some version of it.

My longest is somewhere in that ballpark. We took a couple days longer though. Spent a couple days in Lobster Lake. Not sure what my mileage is. None of it is certified. I have 3 canoes now. A Dolphin Princess lake canoe, an Old Town Discovery 158, and a Old Town Pack canoe. By far, my favorite is the Pack. Very lightweight and very tippy. No one ever touches that one. It is always available for me to use. The Dolphin is great because you can walk around in it. I have had that one since I was 20.

I think their idea is great. It is thinking outside the box. I did not know it was an option. Reading all these posts is a double edged sword. I cannot believe the common sense ideas I have gleaned I would never had considered. On the other hand it is killing me. I want to get in my truck, drive down, and join them.

Latest mode: I am making a fishing net that will thread onto the end of one of my trekking poles. Torn apart an old kids critter net. Going to replace steel rod with 1/8 aluminum rod. Only obstacle is finding a suitable connection between said pole and said rod. I know what I will be doing tonight.

What ever works for them. I did the VA Creeper out of Damascus & another alternative on my AT Thru. On PCT I highly recommend the Eagle Creek alternative over official route. I never applied for 2000 miler. Memories mean a whole lot more than a piece of paper. I can't blame them for doing a float trip. Be nice alternative to restricted regs & crowds in SNP. Even renting canoes may be cheaper than stopping at all the lodges in the park for them.:D

Thanks FC... the donkey engine (stone tower) was about 1/4 of a mile off the AT on a blue blaze right beside the Yellow Springs Village Site. The dry well with the moss was at Yellow Springs Village Site (1167.2) That thing has me a lil concerned, b/c it's not far from the camping spots. It was only 50 feet from where my hubby hung his hammock. There's nothing to prevent one from falling down in there at night when you only have a head lamp for light to see the forest floor. I think someone should mark that well better or build something up to prevent someone from stepping into it my accident. Also, I forgot to mention that there was a HUGE ant hill at the site as well.

I really hope it counts. OZ and Co. like to change things up with the hike. So many people need to do that to make it through. I hear you there. When I did my longest day on AT (38 miles mostly slackpacking) I had to take a zero to rest up & I had been hiking for months! I made it 49 miles for my longest day on PCT. Another mile would have allowed me to rejoin my hiking partners due to a zero with allergies, but when I stopped for a break once I sat down on my pack I realized I wasn't going to get up again. Pulled out my pad & sleeping bag & crashed beside the trail.

Just went through Molino, FL - hometown of Don Sutton. If you blink you'll miss it.

I remember Don Sutton talking once about growing up poor and only having feed sacks shirts to wear (and maybe only two at a time of those). He felt he really was rich when he started playing professional baseball and could afford to buy himself shirts from a store. Just imagine how much more he would be making now he if was born 50 years later. :)

I do not know what to make of this aqua blazing thing. Sounds like some people think they are still in the Café. I had dismissed it as a joke until I saw Robin talking about doing it in her journal. Oops, I mean Violet.

Hey it gives the trail, shelters, and hostels some relief from the Bubble, and sounds like a lot of fun.

Picking up SolCreature tomorrow morning so he can hike the trail. My other friend from Hawaii is out there now. Gotta get some other stuff done today.. have a great day everyone!!!

HM, that's smart, you get to be in more pictures that way. My wife is a photographer and I really am not, therefore I end up in lot more pictures than she does. Which in our case in unfortunate because she is a whole lot better looking.

Well I sure could have used a little motion last night.

Lazurus just finnished the Batona trail this morning, I had to bail last night as I was hobblein on two blisterd feet after a 25 mile day (my longest to date) that ultimately had me slowed to about 1 mph.

Just a couple pics. I'm pretty sure Lazurus will give a report, and since it was hike, I'll not give at this time. Had a blast!218442184521846just look at how calm, cool and collected he looks, and how frazzled I look, guys a Machine! Awesome time Lazurus...Thanks!

Roid players. Good one Astro. Who all falls into this category?

I guess there are three sets: the known, the suspected, and the guys who just happened to play at the same time. Last HOF ballot Bonds and McGwire in the first, Piazza and Bagwell in the second, and Biggio in the third (although some believe Piazza and Bagwell are also in the third (some suspect while other don't), and thus the confusion).

Shame Bud Selig didn't stand up and nip it in the bud, instead of us trying to sort through the mess we have now. He should have told the Players Union no agreement unless we test everyone. I believe the clean players would have supported this, and they are probably regretting that they did not challenge their leadership on it now. Of course hind sight is 20/20.

Yep, back in 1961 life was a lot simpler. :)

When approached with the idea of creating a museum in his honor, New York Yankee outfielder Roger Maris, who hailed from Fargo, initially declined out of humility. Eventually, though, he would say, “Put it where people will see it, and where they won’t have to pay for it.”http://www.rogermarismuseum.com/

Pulled out my pad & sleeping bag & crashed beside the trail.I can not even fathom those kinda miles Mike, but then I didin't think I'd ever do what I did either. Like you, when I sat down.....I just knew I was done....didn't even have to talk myself into it, and I'd have made it to if it weren't for my feet, the rest of me was feelin great! I was ready to go. Was lurking here and noticed this. I had a similar thought when I bought mine, but I heard that not all EMTs are equipped to cut titanium bands... If you smash your finger and it starts swelling and they can't get it off you lose the finger. I ended up with tungsten carbide, as it is cheaper, stronger but is easily cut with tools any EMT should have. Just a thought.

MD, jewelry grade titanium can be cut just as easily as stainless steel which is why I opted for it. There is a persistent urban legend that Titanium can't be cut, however it is false. I also learned something today You will be interested to know; tungsten-carbide rings are especially tough and cannot be cutoff, however they can still be removed in an emergency by instead squeezing them applying pressure and shattering them.

http://www.snopes.com/weddings/horrors/titanium.asp

Excerpt from a jewelry FAQ:
http://www.titaniumstyle.com/titanium_tungsten_ring_cut-off.htm

Can Titanium or Tungsten Carbide ring be cut off?

Yes! But first try soaking your hand in an ice cold water for 1-2 minute, then apply a lubricant (such as petroleum jelly or hand lotion) between the ring and the knuckle, hold the ring with a towel and pull with a rocking motion.

In an emergency situation where there might be a medical necessity to remove the band (such as hand or finger injury) the following procedures can be used to cut off the ring safely and quickly.

Titanium rings

Titanium rings can be cut off with manual or motorized ring cutting tool.
All 3 grades of titanium: aircraft grade Ti-64, super hard ti-662 and pure Ti-CP can be cut off with this tool.

In our tests we used 7mm titanium ring. It took 4 minutes to cut off Ti-CP ring, 8 minutes for Ti-6/4 and 12 minutes for Ti-6/6/2
We used manual ring cutting tool with a new, high grade blade. The process is quite simple. The lower jaw of the cutter slides between the ring and finger. The circular saw is turned by the handle to cut through the ring.
Most hospitals emergency rooms will have motorized ring cutting tool which will do the job even faster.

Tungsten and ceramic rings

Tungsten carbide and ceramic rings are removed by cracking them into pieces with standard vice grip locking pliers. The same technique is used for removing natural stone bands like onyx or jade.

Place vice grip locking pliers over the band and adjust the jaws to clamp lightly. Release and adjust tightening screw one-forth turn and clamp again. Repeat this process until a crack is heard. The ring will brake in to two or more pieces.

I did a job in a hospital ER, and a lady came in with swollen hands. The nurse couldn't find the ring cutters, so they asked this electrician if he had anything, he gave em a pair of dikes (pliers) and the nurse asked him to do it....true story!

my point is they do make a ring cutter...though i've never seen one.

There is another Harriman Park, that I have been to, Idaho. Probably walked more there than in New York. It is a state park that a ROYAL Blue Ribbon trout stream runs thru. they say that this place is Grad school for Fly Fishermen. I myself have attended a few classes there! It was also donated by the same family as the one in New york. Nice to have some money.:D

I am running a gamble on the size. My feet are really wide and have a high instep. I typically have to get shoes a size and a half too long because of this. Sandals, flip, etc never seem to be effected by this. I can run 10.5 in shoes and 9 in flip flop. I have a safety valve if they are too small. My hiking partner's feet are smaller than mine and he does not have good camp shoes.

I hope not. I just want to hear how one can suggest that the issues that occur when several thousand people hike the same trail every year, through some densely populated areas, can occur in remote wilderness that gets maybe a handful of visitors a year (of which there are many examples out west...) And more importantly, I'd like to hear how an aversion to those issues means one is not 'cut out for' overnight hiking. :-?

Also I don't like people questioning my reading comprehension... I never did well in math so that's all I've got! :D

This reminds me of the New Kids On the Blecch Simpsons Episode in which the boys form a band, can't sing a lick and use "NASA designed" voice enhancers to wow crowds. All until Homer accidentally trips over the plug of the machine at a concert and their real voices come out.

LOL... it changes by the minute, sometimes. :p

Yeah, FC.. we got the good weather covered in VA today!! :sun

Just spending a few minutes in Daleville on RT 220 I saw 6 hikers that would make 7 counting SolCreature. :D Awesome! SolCreature is a great guy from FL. He started out at Springer but had to get off the trail due to injury. He stayed out just long enough to get bit by the AT bug. :banana He's back out here for a while. He's so happy to be back on the trail.
I love living so close to the trail. I'm very lucky to meet some of the hikers from WB & spend a few minutes with them. I'm such a lucky girl to be alive on this drop dead gorgeous day in VA near the AT. :) I'm also very lucky to have such great friends on here. I love each and everyone of you.

You help me spread the joy!

They are showing up here in BV in greater frequency. Wish I could skip work and shuttle them back and forth. In the morning at Hardees looking out over the small drop off to the road, I see a head bobbing up and down and then the pack. I'm like, crap I wish I could pick them up.

This weekend I saw a handful of hikers about 20 miles North of Harper's Ferry. They said the logs seemed to indicate there were about 250 out ahead of them. I hope my favorite spots don't get trashed. Already found one fire ring full of trash, trash that seemed to indicate a long distance hiker. :(

That sounds about right MD... I hope the hikers passing through are good about not leaving their trash behind but clearly some of them are bad about not picking up after themselves. PA looked pretty good when we rolled through but I know the bubble hadn't hit there yet.

Tiger. No where near as intimidating. I was also looking at the bottom one near his wrist, too. Ace Frehley?

I'm like SolCreature. Started at Springer and had to get off in Franklin. I'm healed and itching to get back on. Perhaps in a few weeks.

The dark haired angel is based on Selena Gomez, the girl in the bikini.

The vast majority are good, I'm sure. This was just a couple foodsaver bags and other plastics left in the fire ring. I guess they figured the next guy would burn it. That still upsets me a bit, but it's nothing to get worked up about. I hope to get out a lot over the next couple weeks and I think a big trash bag and a small bottle of bleach will be added to the gear list just in case. I hope to help out and keep MD clean and healthy, I've really come to love my little section here. I know it just about step for step these days. :D

The real problem in MD is day hikers. With DC and Baltimore so close, and the suburban sprawl they've brought to the surrounding areas, we get tons of day hikers on the trail. Annapolis Rocks, our premier overlook on the AT in MD, is the worst hit. I like seeing everyone and anyone get out but for the average day hiker LNT is a mystery. :(

It is hard for me to get by the face to even notice the tattoos. He looks like such a spoiled punk brat that would cry, stomp his feet, and spin in circles if his sister got 2 more m&ms than him. I must be getting old or something.

LNT is not something some peeps like to hear about much less practice. That's the way of the world. I think overall the trail is kept up very nicely. :) Some peeps have to pick up the slack for others but it works. I bet the trail is a huge hit with day hikers in that area. :>).

Thank ya for the kind words Trillium. Great to be your friend. I didn't know that you had to get off the trail this year. I hope you can get back on soon. If you want to get back on in this area I can help you out with that. SolCreature is originally from MI right outside of Detroit. :D

Congrats on winning the new footwear BB!! Love the way you snag those posts 2 ... is it my turn next? 40K?

Who's Eric Clapton. Is he like Justin Bieber? :D

FC, with the green grin we assume that is a joke, otherwise we need to start hiring bouncers. :D
