FC, with the green grin we assume that is a joke, otherwise we need to start hiring bouncers. :D

I'd bounce myself if I didn't know who Eric Clapton is. Then I wouldn't be able to utter the words "trained musician" ever again.

Now, for grins and giggles, who knows the stage name of Gordon Sumner? I'll give you a hint. He didn't sing pop music asking someone to be his "girlfriend" while still wearing pull-ups.

The vast majority are good, I'm sure. This was just a couple foodsaver bags and other plastics left in the fire ring. I guess they figured the next guy would burn it. That still upsets me a bit, but it's nothing to get worked up about. I hope to get out a lot over the next couple weeks and I think a big trash bag and a small bottle of bleach will be added to the gear list just in case. I hope to help out and keep MD clean and healthy, I've really come to love my little section here. I know it just about step for step these days. :D

The real problem in MD is day hikers. With DC and Baltimore so close, and the suburban sprawl they've brought to the surrounding areas, we get tons of day hikers on the trail. Annapolis Rocks, our premier overlook on the AT in MD, is the worst hit. I like seeing everyone and anyone get out but for the average day hiker LNT is a mystery. :(It's more than just the day hikers. I saw weekend hikers adding to the problem as well. They burned all their food containers in the firering, including plastics, mountain house pouches and some aluminum. When it all didn't burn, they just left it in the firering. Definitely changed my opinion of those rocket scientists.

I'm a weekend hiker, but I agree with you. There's one in every bunch. A few times I've had to tell my friends not to throw cans in the fire. Sure they will 'usually' burn with a sufficiently hot fire, but I hate seeing the pieces of cans that don't burn in all the rings. :(

I had a chocolate lab who loved to go in my bass boat. Would stand on the bow with his face in the wind under full throttle. He was funny. when I was stopped and fishing he would not pee in the boat. That guy would jump in the water, swim to shore, get out and pee on the bank then swim back to the boat.

ATM, if you could have got him to go a few hundred feet more off the bank he would have had LNT down better than a lot of hikers do. :)

It's gotta be a "den" thing. The girls are the same way! They will not pee in the kayaks, or on boats. They swim to shore, pee, and swim back. They are too smart to foul the area where they wanna be.

I'd have to watch him real close if I was way out in the middle of the lake. I could tell when he was getting squirrelly and would have to go to shore otherwise he'd jump in miles away. He jumped in one time on me out in the middle of Lake Okeechobee. That lake is about 22 miles wide and 45 long. I only let him jump out within his range and I was sure there were no gators.

On another note, I had a long-haired German Shepard that couldn't swim a lick. I didn't know until one time I was rinsing him off in the lake (we had just been hiking in mud) and when I was through I gave him a shove like a boat and he sank right to the bottom. I had to quick dive under and grab him. He liked water but would never go below his belly. He had a favorite spot over by the falls where he would lay and let the water run over him.

I had a couple of Shelties (a breed known for not liking the water). My little girl thought she was a lab and would swim in anything, anywhere. My big guy would nervously pace (and mutter) along the edge of the water. He was just sure that no good could come of this water experience.

My husky doesn't like it either. She'll get her paws wet crossing streams but that's about as close as she'll go. I figure that some kind of self-preservation thing. After all, where they're from if they get wet it's curtains...

One time I was fishing in the Chesapeake Bay and I got bored so I started throwing a stick for my dog... Well in the chop he missed the stick and kept going. We were all in a panic on shore as he kept going further and further out. He must have gotten 200 yards out, almost into the main channel of the little area we were in, before he started swimming in circles confused. We were all screaming for him to come back but he just kept circling looking for the stick. Finally after a couple minutes of that he just turned around and swam back. He's a goofball. I quoted the lake as being 45 x 22 miles. Whereas Wiki says it's 35 x 29. I was just going by numbers I grew up with as a kid and was told by our friends father. You do learn something new as well as old everyday. I wasn't off by much square mileage wise though.

I procrastinated with my shoulder for a year and a quarter. I saw the orthopedist last Nov and got a cortisone shot. While the pain is gone from my shoulder, I believe a nerve is being pinched for my left hand. I can't play the sax, piano or guitar with my left hand and I'm constantly dropping things. I'm going to see him in about an hour and find out what he thinks. Pray for me.

I'm saying all of the above as well. I think that after he won a small, but nice, amount of cash from the North Carolina Lottery that he decided he would like to take his lovely wife for a romantic trip somewhere but when he asked for the time off at work, he learned that he used up all his time off. And while celebrating his win a little too heartily with an adult beverage, he tripped and fell and broke his arm. And d is that after that he gave most of the cash to his lovely wife so she could buy something special to replace the curtains, flamingos and other decorative items for the cafe.

not much difference between what you have and a trail runner. a few ounces.
salomons, new balance and lasportiva are the main trail runner candidates.i wera lasportiva raptors.
are your shoes goretex?

HB, no gore-tex on this pair, but they still do not dry as fast as I would like (thinking that in addition to weight is plus for trail runners, while hiking shoes might provide better support and more protection).

Thinking of trying out some New Balance MT1110 for a couple of weeks before I head off to Hot Springs-Dalesville/Waynesboro in July. Figure if they fit OK here, then they should last a month (~ 500 miles). Can always use the Chameleons again when I hit the rocks in future summers in places like PA, NH, ME. Or if I love the trail runners so much, maybe I just budget for replacing them more often. Seems like a reasonable plan for this summer. Or am I missing something?

this is true of almost all shoes and boots. rubber gets harder in the cold, and whats sticky in warm weather can be slick in cold. thats why tread is equally important

With my current life I am pretty much limited to Summer for any long term hikes, so that is not an issue.

no you'll probably go through a pair of trail runners faster than hiking shoes, and i do use greensuperfeet to handle the terrain without foot fatigue.id say they should last you around 7-800 miles a pair.try them. like you said, you can always change back.

Helping my daughters and mortgage payment. Keeping a good paying job trumps all else at least a for a couple more years.
a man wakes up one morning and hears a little voice in his head saying
"quit your job, sell the house, take the money and go to vegas." he ignores it, but the next day the voice becomes more persistant. quit your job, sell the house , go to vegas. keeps on until he cant stand it anymore, finally quits his job, sells the house, takes the money and hops on a plane to vegas.when he lands at the airport, the voice tells him to find a yellow checker cab and tell the driver to bring him directly to caesars palace.when he gets to caesars palace, the voice tells him to tip the drive $100 bill, walk straight into the casino and go to the roulette table. he does. the voice tells him to put all his money on black17.he does.the croupier drops the ball in, turns round and round, finally landing on red18.

Here's what the surgeon told me. My hand problem is not with my shoulder. It's a carpal tunnel kind of thing. I will have to get a nerve conductivity test.

I have had CTR surgery on both hands and a trigger finger release on the left one. I waited too long. Do not hesitate. Get is done if they recommend. I am not a doctor person. I have great respect for their service and ability. i just avoid them as much as I can. I put off my surgery from 1992 until May of 2011. I had a 4.7 on right hand and 5.1 on left prior to surgery and zero numbness after it. I hand them cut both bands rather than going under them. Less risk and I am not a hand model, so I was not worried about scars. If it needs to be done, do not hesitate. It meant a big change in my life.

It's fairly sunny out. I'm gonna hang all the ferns back up. I took them off day before yesterday and put them on the ground to get "free" water. Free water. Who would have ever thought. My grandma is rolling over in her grave. I told her one time I said " hey grandma, they sell water in the store in bottles now". She said "go on boy, water is free". Didn't want to believe it. Sis says it's coming down pretty good in Palm Beach County too.
