As if on cue, just got back from a red letter day on Franconia Ridge. Falling Waters up, F Ridge Trail, which was just amazing, especially along Mt. Lincoln, just gorgeous. Including the walk to and from the parking lot and the spur to Shining Rock, which was trippy, I did 9.2 miles in 9.2 hours, all rest stops included. Not bad at all considering how tough the territory is. Though it was cold and windy above 4500', I just wanted to stay up on the Franconia Ridgeline. Such an amazingly beautiful place.

Thanks, Lou, would've been fun if you coulda made it. Was awesome fun even so. The F Ridge Trail is billed in the descriptions I've seen has having some fearsome knife-edgy sections. I didn't find that at all. Never is the look down the slope eastward menacing - it's more gradual than the west, and the west, at several points, is breathtakingly steep below, awe-inspiring, but never do you have this veritiginous, OMG-I-might-fall-to-my-doom sense. You'd have to make an effort to get started down that slope. Once started, it would be a fast trip down, though, and a painful one. The look down into Walker Ravine from Lincoln is world-class. Words can't do it justice. My phone/cam was on fumes by then, so no picture of that view, but this one of Dry River Ravine with the Notch, Cannon and the Kinsmans in the background will give a sense of it:

October works for me, and for Hikerboy, too. Dave, as long as you don't make if Elf-Be-Gone, I'm good. What do y'all say to a Semi-Pemi traverse for a weekend in Oct? Park Car 1 at Lincoln Woods, Car 2 at Gale River Trailhead. Hike into Lincoln Woods to camp Friday night (easy 2.8 miles), then to Guyot Saturday (8.5 miles and about 3500 elevation gain with full pack, then an optional trek to West Bond to bag it and its legendary sunset, again, weather permitting), then to Car 2 Sunday (about 4000 elevation loss, 1500-2000 gain including optional bag of Galehead).

We bag the Bonds and South Twin (which is a goal for me this year as one of the 10 highest Whites - would like to do all 10 this year, have done four of them). Could easily, weather permitting, snag Galehead as a side trip. Whatcha guys think?

Oh, oh, oh! (Imagine Arnold Horschack). We could do it Columbus Day weekend if that works for everyone. Could bag North Twin and maybe Zealand on day two (Zealand sans pack as a quick am trip, leaving packs and gear at the campsite, perhaps), Camp at Garfield Ridge night two. Would be about 10 miles with full pack day two, and a quick and, I gather, relatively easy down on Day 3, perhaps bagging Garfield in the AM of day three or the evening of day two.

Does Columbus Day weekend work for you both? I'm flexible on itinerary, HB, though I'd say that approaching Garfield from the south sounds like an awful lot of flat, green tunnel hiking with not much in the high ground, which for me is a big selling point for hikes. Also, doing Garfield then over to Crawford makes the Bonds a big, involved side trip, which is why I wanted to hit them from the south. How about my proposed route from the south, then hang a right at the A.T., taking it day 2 down to Crawford? We could camp night two at Ethan Pond and go hit some of the reputedly awesome waterfalls (Arethusa and neighbors) on day 3 after dropping packs at Car 2 if we have the time, weather and legs for it. As you know, HB, the A.T. from Zealand Hut to Crawford is supposed to be pretty easy, much of it an old railroad grade. The views of the eastern Pemi from that part of the trail would be great.

then guyot down thru the bonds. camp somewhere down in the pemi, its pretty easy to find sites there. garfield by the way has one of the best views in the whites.
I would need 4-5 days. weekends for me are tough because of the job.and i just took 3 weeks in august so my vacation time is done. hoping to find a 3 or 4 day window to do a section with lou, prob in PA or NJ.
actually if i had columbus day weekend off, would probably go to the gathering. missed it last year.

I sprained my ankle in near Woody Gap (N. I started hiking two years ago with a big pair of Timberland boots. Have gone smaller and lighter in increments. Have been fine with a worn-tread old pair of light running shoes, except that they don't hold well on slippery spots. I expect the new pair of running shoes will solve that. I think what one needs will depend on one's foot and ankle structure. I have very wide feet, thick and muscular, so I seem to do OK. I take care on tricky descending moves, b/c it's easy to strain one's ankle in such spots regardless of what the footwear.

I have small feet and ankles. It's odd, I'm able to walk around in heels all day long and stand around in them at trade shows, etc., but put me in a pair of low top running shoes and the ankles are prone to go out with no warning. Even on flat level stretches of trail. Oh well, I'll continue being old-school but ambulatory!!

My ventilators are pretty beaten up and have served me well. Once upon a time…
There was a happy little town at the base of a large mountain just off the Appalachian Trail. This little town was named “Tridsville”, and its residents, of course, were referred to as “Trids”. But there was a serious problem in this otherwise happy trail town. The only water source for the townspeople was a spring located high up on the mountain, so the Trids had to climb the mountain each day to gather water. Inconvenient, yes, but not an impossible situation. Except this situation was far from normal.

Upon the mountain lurked a terrible troll. This troll was in such constant ill humor that every time one of the townspeople attempted to climb up the mountain for water, this nasty creature would KICK the unfortunate victim entirely off the mountainside, to suffer a bone-crunching, bloody death. A terrible situation indeed.

One day, a thru-hiking rabbi hiked into town and asked for a drink of water. Hearing of the problem, his heart was moved and he pledged to help the friendly little borough. Try as they might, the townspeople could not persuade him to abandon this obviously suicidal venture.

So up the mountain with his trusty Sawyer In-Line Water Filter and Platypus bag climbed the rabbi. After about an hour of hiking, the rabbi was half way up the rocky slope when he heard a rustling in the bushes. Though he was a brave and courageous man, the rabbi could not help but quake in his trail runners – the troll was surely nearby.

And then—he saw it! A hideous beast, it was, at least ten feet tall and as wide as three hefty men. And its feet! Incredibly huge! With legs as wide as oak trees!

Thoroughly terrified, the rabbi resumed his ascent up the slope. The troll failed to move closer, yet also climbed upward on a parallel course as the rabbi moved higher and higher. At last, the rabbi reached the summit, spotted the bubbling brook, collected the water and returned to the cliff to begin his descent. Strangely enough, the troll had watched him at the stream, but kept its distance the entire time.

But this time, the further down the mountain the rabbi got, the closer crept the troll…closer….closer…sneaking closer…

The hideous creature was only a few yards away when the rabbi decided to stand his ground and confront the troll.

“All right!” cried the rabbi. “I know you to be a murdering, loathsome beast! Whatever your intentions are, reveal them now! Or go your own way and leave me in peace!”

The troll crept even closer. The rabbi tensed, ready for action.

“You’ve already murdered over a dozen townspeople – why don’t you try and kick ME off this cliff?!”

The troll crept even closer, its putrid breath blowing hot right into the brave man’s face.

“Kick me! Kill me if you can! But I’ll give you the fight of your life!”

At which point the troll leaned closer, and flexing his huge gnarly feet, gave a hideous smile, and replied….

Hey I forget why the bullet thing is in the thread - can we drop it? I just don't find it funny, just being awkward.

Here's a new reason:

The proper number of bullets for an ultra-light hiker to carry is five bullets! It's a reference to another thread on guns.

Then maybe a Enlightened Equipment quilt!

If you ever get over here... you need to make it a "thing" to get real white lightening at least once.
IF??
It's a bloody dead cert I'll be there!
Current thoughts are finish work end February, leave first week March - few days in Rome, road trip to Netherlands, few days/week with family there and Atlanta about 21st March. Start approach trail about 24th. Want to be past Walasi-Yi before Good Friday to avoid any Easter crush there.
And white lightning I'll try but I doubt I'll partake too much.
I intend to taste test every brand of what passes for beer over there....:D

In our house that is now "sans enfants", one bedroom is my wife's craft room and one is the "hiking room".

My wife, 'Overload', shops cheap, read that, Walmart, goodwill, she's cheap. She doesn't what to know what I pay for things. After our New Years hike I used her closed cell and let her use my old Thermorest. I decide to get a Neo-air. I'm not going to tell her about it yet. I come home one day and there is a package in the door about the size of my Thermo. Sweetie what is this? Oh, I bought myself a new pad, just like yours! Only, it's not like mine, it's nasty, all stained and discolored, Well now she has a thermorest pad. A few weeks later I go in HER gear closet and there is a half pad thermo and a blue down bag hanging in the way back, not new mind you, but new to her.
