Yeah, I'm just across the river from Brunswick and my wife and I come to hang out at Barley and Hops a couple Friday nights a month. Headed up there tonight for some wings and local brew.

Sorry there should have been one of these :D after that last sentence. This is a really great area to live. Tons of Civil War history, national museums, trails out the wazoo, beautiful country and great, great people. Love it!

Oh awesome! I haven't been to B&H in years, but I live right across town in Ballenger... Might have to check it out sometime. You ever go to Brewer's Alley? The beer's just OK, but it is local. The food is good, so long as you don't get fooled by their 'fancy' items. They try to be a little more than they are in my opinion; I stick with pizza and sandwiches, which are both fantastic. :)

You are so right about the area though. Good mix of history, nature, and culture. Frederick has grown up a lot in my relatively short time. If you ever want to check out Gambrill or the Frederick Watershed ( ;) ) let me know; I mountain bike up that way and have gotten to know the area extremely well, despite trails not being marked well (or in most cases at all.)

The watershed is a very interesting place. It's technically not a 'recreation area' but a wildlife management area, so it's kept pretty hush hush... But there is some fantastic trail through there both for hiking and biking. I consider it my 'secret garden.' :D

We've got some pretty good sunshine here right now, but the rain is supposed to be moving in later. We got lucky. Andrea moved across Florida below us and then went up. We got some good rain the other day. Flash flooding that dissipated really quick.

Wow - that sounds cool. I hadn't heard about the Frederick Watershed but have been to Gambrill several times (though definitely not through all the trails). Our spring training hikes are usually up in Maryland starting from Gathland and working our way up to Pen Mar over a couple days. Lather, rinse, repeat.

B&H have decent food and good beer (IMO - also as a home brewer). Happy hour is $2.50 house drafts and ridiculously cheap appetizers. My wife and I eat for $25 total including 2 beers a person. Haven't been to Brewer's Alley yet, though. Plenty of time :) Frederick is our "go to" place for dining/shopping. It's a bit closer than Leesburg and a tad bigger.

If you get on the Blue trail in Gambrill and head North you'll actually leave Gambrill and end up in the Watershed. The Blue trail passes through Gambrill, the Frederick Watershed, Cunningham Falls State Park, Catoctin State Park and the Thurmont Watershed and runs for 28 miles... It's a pretty cool hike and you can camp in Cunningham to split it up into two days. I've been meaning to do just that, and have a car waiting at the site with a cooler and some gear, as an introductory hike for some of my hiking group's lady friends... I think it'd be perfect! :)

When I go out for an overnight, which is usually all I can arrange, I generally do the section between Route 40 and Wolfsville Road. It's 9 miles and includes Annapolis Rocks and Black Rocks, which are both fantastic (as I'm sure you know.) Sometimes I go to Rocky Run Shelter instead, just because I love that shelter and the sites around it. Maryland may not be noteworthy when you've done the whole AT, but for the area some of the best hiking is on the AT. I love having it so close. :D

Wow, that's awesome about B&H, I'm definitely gonna check it out now, maybe even this weekend if we have time. Brewer's Alley does $2.50 drafts during the week as well, but you won't get out of there that cheap... As I said, they think they're fancier than they really are. Lately I've just been getting a pizza to share and maybe an appetizer. They have a brick oven so their pizza is pretty darn good. The best pizza in Frederick is Il Forno's on Route 40 though. ;)

Very cool to talk to somebody else familiar with the area! I gotta say also, while we're talking, some of your posts have been extremely inspirational to me in regards to the environment. I absolutely love your take on ecological responsibility and especially the lessons you've tried to teach your children about it! http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/images/smilies/golfclap.gif

Awww shucks. The environment is something I'm quite passionate about because I enjoy it just so darn much. And I desperately want the next generation to love it as much as I do and be even more empowered to take care of it than my generation has been. I can only hope that message gets through to them. Awesome! I ran a 5k race looong before I attempted a half marathon. I hadn't even dreamed of a marathon, let alone a half marathon, until I by chance saw "Born To Run" by Christopher McDougal on a night stand at my cousin's house just before my wife and I hopped on a boat for a cruise. I absolutely horked it down and decided after a couple days on the cruise that maybe I could try longer. By day 3 I had run my first 10 miles. So on day 4, we decided to just run from the dock to the ferry in Hamilton to get back to the boat and see how we felt. We didn't know how far it was until we got back home and I googled it. Turned out we'd run about 15 miles that day. It was then we decided to run a half marathon and the rest is history.

I love meeting other runners as it's still relatively new to me. I've been overweight for most of my life and running was something I thought I could never do. Now it's something I wonder how I went so long without it. Let me know if you run any events up north here and we'll come out to cheer you on. Maybe even run it with you!

That's a cool story. :) I will let you know if I run events in NOVA in the future. We used to live in Haymarket near Manassas. My son and wife live in Leesburg. I'll be up there the week of the 17th. :) I will be running on the W&OD, it's right in their backyard. :)

CT is a very reputable supplier. I am very happy with his Packa design. He is looking for orders of the camp shoes he has just designed. I will review them as I can.I wondered what you guys were talking about a number of pages back when there was mention of you winning something. I must have missed the linked thread. Looks like something that I would like. But wondering how they will do negotiating rocks and roots around camp.

FYI...I found doxycycline off-shore for $.21/pill. I'm not real comfortable with buying drugs this way but when I saw thier sample program I felt better, they give you your choice of ED samples free, I figure those must work or they wouldn't be giving free stuff away to get you hooked, so hopefully the doxycycline I ordered is the real thing also, need it for my dog, doubt he'll have a use for the samples since he lost the twins early in life.

a simple life is a happy life.
thats what makes the trail so alluring. its simple. you get up in the morning, eat, have coffee, pack, walk, eat, walk, make camp, eat, sleep. you have the things you need. you need the things you have.you offer yourself to the community and the community offers itself to you.

Invisible Man (and HooRoo) will continue without me.

Sorry, but my heart isn't in it enough anymore.
It's been a blast and I don't regret anything.

I wondered what you guys were talking about a number of pages back when there was mention of you winning something. I must have missed the linked thread. Looks like something that I would like. But wondering how they will do negotiating rocks and roots around camp.

I will let you know after my hike across Maine. I think they will do okay. Time will tell.

Thinking about the Aussie's and Co. just hanging out....

Koala's have a great life, all they do is sleep a lot, eat, and reproduce.

How good are 70's pimp shoes for hiking, though?

They did make you taller, but that really did not matter I guess if everyone else was wearing them.

Yep. I've got a lot of things older than you. Boots, jacket for starters.

I have a marriage that is 1 year older than him. I was surprised by the age. i would have guess a 30ish. He is doing okay for 26. I would have been banned from this site within days at 26.

They would have sent the U.S. Marshals after me.

MD, I would recommend becoming a donating member. Could be the best $10 (or more if you prefer) that you ever spend. ;)

+1 on that. Wow! What a mess my posts would be if I could not edit them. Okay.... more of a mess.
