No, I got it from my big brother. He hated English Lit and to my knowledge, never read any of the assigned books completely. I loved reading, and read anything I could get my hands on in those days.

Did you get him to pay you to tell him what the books were all about? :-?

No, he had Cliffs Notes.
He liked reading, just not the required reading.
I got to read a lot of stuff on my own that way. Although reading above my level backfired sometimes. I still remember a book called "On the Beach" which I read when I was about 10 years old & too young to understand exactly what nuclear fallout was. My first exposure to doomsday literature. It left me sort of shook up and depressed for a day or so. Still better than the crap kids read nowadays.

I ejoyed your Danielle Steele fantasy much better than the reality. Would you write in a couple more paragraphs, please. Put in at least one hiker hunk who sweeps me off my feet. Or at sweeps least the pack off my back. It's just fantasy fiction, Jim the Gimp won't mind :Dok, what kind of hunk do you prefer? A Brad Pitt kind of hunk or a George Clooney kind of hunk or even a Matt Damon kind of hunk?

Did the Sound of Music Tour in Austria with wife and four children 7 and under at the time. Needless to say doing tours with four children 7 and under is not ideal. :eek:Stayed at the Blood Mtn cabins with a couple from Austria and several days later on the trail met a brother and sister from Austria and none of them had ever heard of the Sound of Music in Austria or of the Von Trapps. They only heard about Sound of Music once they came to the US to hike the AT when many people, including m'self, asked them about it.

I'm back! my feets have healed, and I got 10 miles in before 6:00am

I really missed walking this week, and was bouncing off the walls....So I ask you. When you do a hike, how long does it take you to recuperate, if at all? just curious....this was my 3rd hike (granted my feet were torn, and the other two were over rocky trail, PA/NJ) but i really didn't see this becoming the norm...but perhaps it is for me, oh well, gotta do what we gotta do.

Yay!! Good for you OZ!! You have some kind of special wife to encourage you like she does. :banana Maybe partly it was the aqua blazing that was getting to ya. I read about how you have to get yourself and ur kayak around dams etc... who knew? Plus, you can feel better about your accomplishment by knowing you will hike the piece you missed with your soul mate. OK - update
After a phone call, emails and 2 1/2 hours of late night internet chat with my wife I am continuing.
I am going to push for a late August summit where my wife will be waiting with a bottle of champagne.
We will then have time to come back and hike Shenandoah to complete my 2013 hike status.
About to box up pc so can't add much more at present.

Get your butt out here and roll out a special Gene the Dancing Machine in celebration!!

The other day I stopped at the grocery store. She went threw the few things I had & asked if that was it. I told her to add a roll of Copenhagen. Price only changed a few bucks. I looked at the receipt & knew it was wrong in my favor, but just wasn't right. While I was looking at it the cashier asked what I thought was wrong & I told her. She charged me appropriately & went to alert proper people. Bar code was for one can not 5. Just not my way to cheat an honest business due to some screw up.

Yeah, and if it had been my business, I probably would have given it to you for free for helping me find the problem and being so honest about it.

Had a nice, soggy hike today in the wake of the tropical storm remnants. Started at the CT-MA state line west of Bear Mountain, hiked the NW Road/Brook/Puddle to the A.T., where I met two nice thrus - Passover, from Asheville, NC, and Witch Doctor from Orlando. Hiked Sages Ravine with them to the brook crossing. The waters were running the highest I've ever seen them, beautiful. The crossing was safe but not far from being dangerous, knee-high at the highest point - trekking poles came in handy. We chatted all along and met a Yale Med professor and his son, who were part of a boy scout troop staying at Sages campsite. Since the two thrus needed to make time and it was getting late, and since I was going to divert from the A.T. to hike to the base of Bear Rock Falls, we parted company at the Welcome to Mass sign, not before exchanging some photos and info. I look forward to reading her journal at Wordpress.

Trekked along an old A.T. routing which runs further east than the current A.T. It was good and soggy. As it was about 6:30 pm by now, after reviewing the map, I decided, rather than attempting to find the rugged Bear Rock Falls from below, which was unknown and seldom-traveled terrain, I would divert back to the A.T. and see as much of the falls as I could from above, right by the A.T., and from the scrambly cliffs to the immediate south of the falls, as far down as I could get. This would allow me to hike near the well-traveled A.T. on a route, including the cliff scramble, I'd seen and done before. No fumbling and route finding in what I gather is rough terrain below the falls. If I'd gotten out there sooner, I'd've love to have given that a go. Another time.

As it was, the falls were outstanding. A raging torrent thanks to the rains, and a very impressive sight from all angles. I got about 1/3 of the way down the falls, which I estimate at 150', both from eye-balling on the spot and from sizing them up in Google Earth this evening. It looked like going much further than I could would start to get technical. Really rough terrain. Very pretty. I took some shots along the way, of Wachocastinook Brook falls near Lion's Head in Salisbury, west of the A.T. by about a mile, of Passover and Witch Doctor at the Mass sign, of Bear Rock Falls from the lowest perch I attained as well as some panoramic shots above Bear Rock Falls and in Sages Ravine. There's pic of me in Sages taken by Witch Doctor, too.

btw, the silk boxer shorts are really more like shorts but they are real silk and were made in Thailand which is where fiddlehead lives.

Ahhh... the mystery is solved now. Thanks T. What a great deal getting silk shorts from fiddlehead. I need to inform T.S. Kobzol I'm not interested in buying his new boxers unless they are silk ones from Thailand. ;)

The first of from just upstream of the brook crossing, the last is from just downstream of the log bridge to the Sages Campsite, the others in between.

Aww looks fun... no, I did not Deer Hunter. This entire weekend I have been busy doing stuff around the house. I mowed the lawn, trimmed the bushes and pulled weeds almost all day yesterday. I need to go out and finish the bushes in a few. (I've got outside duties covered since the hubby is working inside in the kitchen. We are in the middle of a kitchen remodel. :)) I talked to a guy that works at Outdoor Trails about this event. He was cool. He's really hoping to open up a hostel in Troutville and do shuttles, slackpacking and all that. He's already letting hikers stay at his place this year. I told him I would love to help out. He grew up in this area, young and real excited about it all. It's a family endeavor from what I understand. He's married and everyone in his family seems to be on board. I will def. get there next year. It sounds like it's going to be a growing thing. Next year we should go.... fo sho. I really wish I could have gone to get connected to more peeps in the area.
