[QUOTE=HikerMomKD;1483895]Aww looks fun... no, I did not Deer Hunter. This entire weekend I have been busy doing stuff around the house. I mowed the lawn, trimmed the bushes and pulled weeds almost all day yesterday. I need to go out and finish the bushes in a few. (I've got outside duties covered since the hubby is working inside in the kitchen. We are in the middle of a kitchen remodel. :)) I talked to a guy that works at Outdoor Trails about this event. He was cool. He's really hoping to open up a hostel in Troutville and do shuttles, slackpacking and all that. He's already letting hikers stay at his place this year. I told him I would love to help out. He grew up in this area, young and real excited about it all. It's a family endeavor from what I understand. He's married and everyone in his family seems to be on board. I will def. get there next year. It sounds like it's going to be a growing thing. Next year we should go.... fo sho. I really wish I could have gone to get connected to more peeps in the area.

So... a confession, an issue, and then a query.

First the confession: I obsess way too much. It is easy to say don't do it, but impossible for someone with OCD to just do it. The latest manifestation of this is my hiking gear. I pack, repack, pull it all out, weigh it, analyze it, question it, replace it, and repack it.

The latest item I am scrutinizing is my watch. I never wear a watch. I use my cell phone when there is no clock handy. On the trail, my cellphone will be on just long enough to text my wife with updates. I bought a tiny digital watch that planned on cannibalizing to save weight.

Then it dawned on me. I do not know if it exists, but a digital watch ring would be perfect for me. I wear my wedding ring all the time. On my other hand I rotate between my college ring, BIW apprenticeship ring, and an ichthys ring. I could wear a digital watch ring instead. Has anyone ever seen such a thing? I am off to search for one.

It would weigh less if I did what I did on one of my trekking poles. I made a fishing net hat attaches to one of my trekking poles. Then it dawned on me that I needed a tape. So I made inch marks up that pole. I could mark myself the same way.

Discussed new buddies (awesome - still haven't gotten to see a rattler at all on the AT :( )
Discussed a new ring watch and salacious distance indicating tattoos - too risque for me
And Oz and Violet's death defying run through the deadly "gorge of terror" (ok, made that one up myself) with Army.

Pouring rain up here. Nice quick thunderstorm to cool things off. Humidity has been right around....cut with butter knife. :D

Yeah.
Good the last two days with the slightly higher water level.
Army pleased Violet and I by going over both days.
Totally different set of sore muscles now.
At least all the bits and pieces in my feet are now rested and no longer hurt.

The river was a fantastic experience and I saw many things not on view on the trail.
Herons, bald eagles, deer swimming, a mink swimming, turtles and numerous types of fish.
Americans at play on the water.

http://www.wikihow.com/Tell-Time-Without-a-Clock

Having said that I also stopped wearing a watch in "normal" life years ago and use my phone.
I am wearing a large watch when I hike that IM got years ago and it has barometer, thermometer, compass, altimeter etc built into it.
All those features are nice but my main use for it is that a watch gives me an odometer - I always have an idea of what pace I have been walking and elapsed time is useful in working out where I am.
I cannot imagine a "ring" watch would be that convenient and would have "inconvenience" issues - waterproof? shockproof? uncomfortable on hiking pole?
I would recommend you stay with a conventional watch or do without and hike with phone in flight mode which still gives you the time.

I thought I would not want one at all. However, on our shake down hikes I kept bugging Ellie Luggah about the time. I will likely glue the cheap one I bought to something and move on. It was more about the invention I came up with that someone had already thought of... about 80 times. Oh well.

If you need anything while you're in HF, Oz. Let me know. We live about 20 minutes away. As for the groundhogs - I'm not sure a days go by I don't see one. They're as common as squirrels around here. BB, just go to Wal-Mart and get a $15 Casio. Water resistant and should hold up to the trail with no problems. I have been wearing one everyday for over 30 years now.

Yup. That is what I bought. The previous thingy made for good canon fodder though. I paid $7.96 +tax for mine. Maybe I will use the tax to hold it onto something. I will be cutting off the wrist band. I do not wear watches. Never have. Never will.

If you need anything while you're in HF, Oz. Let me know. We live about 20 minutes away. As for the groundhogs - I'm not sure a days go by I don't see one. They're as common as squirrels around here. But I have never seen a mink, nor a deer swimming. So cool! Is it bad to say the deer are, um, tasty? ;)

Ok with me.......:)

It had a small dead mammal in it's mouth.
Greyish - too big for mouse, too small for a squirrel unless juvenile.
I also saw the only groundhogs I have seen other than in a car.

Maybe it was a flying squirrel. They are smaller and hyper as all get out. We had some in our attic one time. People refer to them as squirrels on crack.

We had a deer crossing on the Wednesday and it got 3/4 of the way and then we spooked it and it ran back. We were worried it would break a leg but it got back okay.
Yesterday Violet and I saw a head bobbing and figured something was swimming and powered up to get close and it was a fawn, spots and all.
Went ashore just as we reached it and disappeared into the trees.
The others were well back and didn't see it.

So OZ.... How is the Packa holding up? I have not given mine a real test yet.
Well Army started with one that IM now has.
I have a silnylon tarp/poncho.

I like the packa though.
Considering getting one before I leave for use back home but I'll stick with poncho for now.
I think the poncho is preferable unless wind is an issue. bThe Packa wins hands down in the wind.
I hike with wind more at home than here (although I suspect I might prefer a Packa in the Whites and will possibly swap there).

That's OK.
As stated I have a high opinion of the Packa.
I consider pack covers a joke. They never keep the pack dry in heavy rain and most packs cope with light rain anyway.
I have a liner bag (dead dog bag) and only worry about using poncho for heavy or sustained rain.
Poncho can double (did on Thursday) as a tarp to place gear under in the rain.
I have seen Army wear Packa as a pack cover with the jacket part tucked in between pack and back.
When rain starts he just "slipped it on".
To me it was what a pack cover should be - effective with a bit of dual use capability.
They do look ridiculous if you wear it without a pack.:o

Hi, guys. I thought I'd look in. I've had no time to hike or cyber-hike the last few weeks. There's a bad moon rising at home. My wife has been dangerously ill, and I'm likely to be spending much of the summer very close to home so as to be able to attend to her needs. But I'll try at least to say hello once in a while.I'm so sorry to read that your wife is seriously ill. We'll look forward to when you are able to join us for a spot of hiking humor.
