Hard to participate in the convo w/ all these Mainers and New Englanders when I've only been in Maine one time to do a hike in a preserve south of Phippsburg.

Afterwards, I think we went to Bath for some lunch and they were having a summer festival at which one of the main activities were old fire trucks pulls. Never seen anything like that. But everyone was friendly and I bought some great Maine honey and maple syrup. Also a blueberry soda if memory serves that was out of this world.

Seat tube is special order. Can't leave this one anywhere. I lock it up just to go in the convenience store. One time I took it to Walmart and completely broke it down and put it in a shopping cart. They thought I was crazy. But do you know they tagged every part that wasn't attached. They must have really wanted my dollar. I liked your remark. I LOL'd. Probably because there's some truth in the remark. Is this America? Do we have freedoms?

I had the same reaction, GB. Good to hear from you! GB, if you don't like reading long posts than you gotta love LW's. ;P

HI MD ... Nice bike. My son is in2 mountain biking! I think it's a fun sport to watch with friends. I think he did the Snot Cycle race...I don't remember where that was. :>)

Cool color. I used to be able to tell you what year or years they were from the color. Outta touch now with that end of the business.
I may go back to my old shop when I go back to FL this winter and see just what it would take to go to 29's.

Thanks, I really like it. I'm not too up on bikes either. I just can't afford another (I can barely keep up with maintenance on that one) so I try not to look. One day I will be buying a Rumblefish though... Those things are amazing. :)

The stuff I ride is super rocky and technical so the 29s really help me keep rolling over the rock gardens. It's a taller feeling bike, of course, and that took a little getting used to but the advantages are pretty obvious. I think Trek (Gary Fisher) really nailed it with the G2 geometry too... It feels just as nimble as my old 26" Tassajara, if not more so.

My buddy got a Trek Marlin last year for like $600 and it's a 29er with disc brakes... Bikes have really come down a lot and features that used to be big bucks are now coming standard. :D

Oh I've heard of Snot Cycle... You don't forget that name once you hear it! :)

I have a lot of family in Roanoke, by the way. Love the area down there. My grandparents had a house on Smith Mountain Lake that we went to at least twice a year... Some of the best times of my life for sure. My bachelor party last year was on a houseboat down there... Man that was fun. :)

Sorry if I come off rude in my posts elsewhere, I really don't mean to. I think I get a little too into the 'hypothetical' when posting on forums like this. I'm definitely a little too analytical for my own good. :)

29's and discs were just coming into age when I left the business. Hard tails were making a comeback because of the discovery of the loss of energy created by a shocked rear. (so some say) I'm hoping my old boss remembers how much money I made him and will let me order out of the dealer catalog. (LOL)

Ya the tech has really come a long way since I've been riding (about ten years.) I've heard that full suspension bikes don't climb as well due to that loss of energy... But supposedly the new generation of rear shocks have technology that combats that (Rock Shox calls it the 'Brain' I think.) I have heard it's still not perfect though. I really like climbing (did 1,500 feet in 15 miles last night as an 'easy ride') so that was part of my thinking in sticking with a hard tail... The other part was price tag. :)

They're due here today. I said it don't matter. She said I could post before and afters. Anyway, here's my ride. It has the off-road wheels and tires and gears on it now. I have a street set-up too. 22057

ATM, looking at the position of that bike seat, you must be well over 6' tall.

I'm not buying the hype, yet... It's been calm and clear all day today, and still shows no signs of changing. I'm driving a hiker down to Harper's Ferry tonight, and I'm hoping I can do some fishing (or bike riding, haven't decided yet) while I'm there.

A friend of mine who is well versed in weather stuff told me that derechos are notoriously unpredictable and even though the situation looks fitting he thinks it is irresponsible to be predicting that as of now.

I'm not holding my breath for the derecho either but I won't be surprised to see heavy rain, strong wind gusts and maybe a tornado or two pop out of this system. We keep large area weather maps up out here and you can already see the system building and moving in. It won't be here for another couple of hours (my guess) but could still pack a wallop.

He actually used to teach at the boarding school between Franklin, NC and Dillard, GA (Rayburn Gap or something like that). I believe he was raising money for a charity on his thru hike, and doing some other adventure after that. He put a link to his website on WB a while back. So search on his trail name Amplexus here at WB and you can probably find it. If not try Google or Bing. From what I read in the past he seemed like a very interesting and talented person.

Derecho sounds delicious anyway... Does that come with guacamole? :)You have me hungry for some chicken tacos w/ a side of guac now.

Didn't know what derecho meant so googled:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/weather/2013/06/12/weather-derecho-explained/2416225/

A massive line of fierce storms forecast to wallop the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic on Wednesday and Thursday has meteorologists warning about the possibility of a derecho.

So what exactly is a derecho, and why is it so dangerous?

A derecho is a widespread, long-lived wind storm associated with a band or shelf of rapidly moving thunderstorms.
By definition, a derecho has to be at least 240 miles long and have winds of at least 58 miles per hour or greater. However, meteorologist Howard Bernstein says many classic derechos have winds that can top 100 miles per hour, causing extensive damage, leading to massive power outages, and toppling tons of trees.

The now infamous 700-mile derecho last June that roared into Washington, D.C., topped 100 miles per hour.

The roller coaster is nothing compared to North Carolina.
My left thigh has extreme pain develop on downhills.
Seems to be some sort of pressure exerted by hipbelt causing it.
Coupled with heat today it just made the last 6 miles something I will do tomorrow (yes Hb - slackpacking).

try adjusting the load lifters on the top of your shoulder straps, possibly readjust the shoulder straps as well. this has happened to me from time to time, and i realized i had slightly more weight being carried on one side. some small pack adjustments and the pain went away.

Yup, the clouds looked crazy but that was about it. I dropped a hiker (HalfNote) off in Harper's Ferry last night and rode my bike around a bit (I was hoping for a longer ride, but didn't realize Harper's Ferry can only be accessed from 340, which I didn't want to ride on.) I hope he's hunkered down. I warned him about the weather and he's planning on taking a zero in HF anyway. :)

I'm just West of DC... So far it's been a fairly calm day. The first line of storms had some wind and a few spots of hail, but it passed so quickly the damage was pretty minimal even in the worst areas. Now this second line is coming up, but it looks to be weakening and dipping a bit more South than expected.
