I believe HM had it worse that I did going by the map. We definately don't need any more rain for a few days. I think it's safe to say the water sources along the AT in central Virginia are flowing well now. Just stole your lightning bolt by the way.

When we hiked NJ last year it was wet, sloppy and generally a mud pit ;) We wondered what it would be like dry. Looks like another wet start to the summer this year. It was a very rainy and generally cool day when we decided to push past the shelter and do the 3 mile road walk into Vernon. One of the best nights we had on the trail.

One of the best nights we had on the trail.I've only gone between DWG and Culvers Gap (about 28 miles I think)...so I have some trips to do in the Northern part of my home state. Hopefully this fall I'll get back up there to do the rest...love the planning stage, it's part of the fun for me. I might bring some water jugs up there should the weather turn when the bubble comes thru, saw on our last trip somone left a full gal can of Coleman fuel on a picnic table...tha'd be a nice find should one need it (I'll not debate weather or not this should have been left, as I know where that debate leads) but again water can be in very short supply. I took water out of a stream that was upstream of a beaver pond, and i gotta say I was a little nervous about getting the trotts, luckily all went well.

I'm considering jumping ahead (I am coming back to do Shenandoah anyway) at least a few weeks.
What would be a good point to jump to without coming in straight into the Whites and bearing in mind black flies etc?

any reason why youd like to skip ahead? the logical thing would be to flip to katahdinand hike south . check trail journals for people whove already started sobos.i expect the north is going to be muddy as well as buggy.

Easier to hump it or just stay in town a few days if trying to distance yourself from someone than to go thru the hassle of jumping ahead.

Logistically, makes sense to go to K and then SOBO but this is bad time of year and I know wife wants to go there.

Delaware Water Gap has good transportation options.

Thought I had but weather changed things.
Short term fix is to go slower and I will to Pine grove Furnace and halfway point.
May take Katahdin option and flip flop after that.

Doing Shenandoah makes most sense but doesn't fit with me.
I think I'll go slow until after halfway point and then jump ahead if I still feel the same.
Either to Katahdin and southbound or NY/NJ border area so I can be near the area when finishing the skipped bit which should be about when my wife gets here.
Avoids the complications involved in getting a non hiker to the top of Katahdin.

those are turntables.
record palyers had record changers so you could stack a few albums to play

Back in the mid 70s before ipods and even walkmans (at least I didn't have one) I would put a stack of LPs on and the speakers in my bedroom windows and crank it up while I was cutting grass (I had to cut a few acres). One time my cousin was off hunting in the woods (at least 1/2 mile or more away) and he said he could recognize Lynard Skynard. :)

All these "hidden" messages were found by over enthusiastic fans reading more into the music than what was there.
The hidden message about #9 is if you play the line "Number 9, Number 9, Number 9" backwards, it honest to God says "Turn me on dead man", this one is 100% accurate

Didn't they call it "back masking", or something like that?

Paul was the dead man. I seem to remember something like he was the only one barefoot crossing the street on an album cover. Also it had a different foot forward than than John, George, and Ringo (but that could have been because he was left handed). That stuff was over 40 years ago, but it is what I think I remember.

Hey OZ....I'm way too slow to keep up with the activity in the cafe, so this post is relevant to some stuff about 5 pages back !

Just some observations & personal experience from my thru-hike that i would like to share with you ....take it as you will

On my hike I met up with a great bunch of people that I hiked with prety much all the way.....we had a great time & I loved the simplicity of life on the trail....no deadlines, no committments, just total self sufficiency with everything I needed on my back.

Around Harpers Ferry my wife came over to visit, and a couple of the others also had family come to visit. So we had a period of about 2 weeks where we did some slackpacking & stayed in lots of hotels & generally based our hiking around meeting up with other people. It was of course great to have family around, but after a while I did find that the hiking was not so enjoyable.... the simplicity of trail life had been lost.

After all our visitors left, things got back to normal & the enjoyment returned.....it made me realise that the most valuable part of the experience (for me) was the removal from the day to day demands of life.......

Somehow my message for money drop never got thru (Remember this was pre ATM days) I limped into Cloverdale PO wet from a rainstorm I limped as fast as I could to a bridge to avoid. It hit before I could get there! When I got to the bridge it was an open trestle RR bridge! :( Much to my dismay in my supply box there were no funds. My shipper did chose this box did ship 3 nips of Wild Turkey & local newspaper. It helped to mellow me out. Do what it takes to let you go on. Catch a bus up to NYC, Northern MA, VT or wherever. Jacko:

I have an idea for you: take a train to Washington and skip up to the NYC area, if ppl can join you. Start back on the trail at Harriman and head north. The trail in NY is relatively easy, CT a bit harder but still relatively easy. VT is not too bad, NH starts somewhat easy then gets really hard. Change of scenery will help, and you can restart your social scene. Plus, you can hang with some of us northeastern Cafe folk. You'll skip the awful PA and NJ rocks. Once you finish Katahdin in August, you can clip off the remaining 400-500 miles in the Mid-Atlantic, which will be easy after northern New England.

I will PM this to our Aussie buddy, too.

PS: Nothing personal, Rasty and LW, but I think HM has a point. Oz is asking for a bit of tea and sympathy, which may not be to your taste, but I submit for your review the question of whether it is helpful to impose your view of things on him. She seems to feel that's what you're doing, and I don't think that unreasonable on her part. She's right that you might come off needlessly and counter-productively gruff to one who's asking for the opposite. Meanwhile, you're right that thru-hiking is tough business and there's value in bucking up and soldiering on, that we can agree on for sure.

i think the last thing oz is looking for right now is more social bs. he needs to get out on his own and hike.he'll be fine, and hell be here in a month as it is. the logistics of going back and forth to fill in the missing pieces isnt worth the possible benefit, of which i see little.

the trail in ny is NOT relatively easy, just the stretch from fahnestock to kent.west of the hudson, it is surprisingly difficult.neither you or hikermom have any idea whats involved mentally in long distance hiking, most of oz's hike has been social.he needs to disconnect, walk and stop thinking so much.and im betting he'll come through it just fine if he just stays on the trail

I think LW is the closest to being right about what I need to do.
I'm not hanging around in here for a while and please stop any bickering over what I should do.
It's not what the cafe is about.
I made the decision last night that I need to talk to an American I've always admired.
I'm taking the train to DC this morning, will walk around Arlington and the Capitol and have a chat with Abe.
Might see what HooRoo thinks of him.
I will return to the trail tomorrow.

Ya, the National Museum of Natural History is probably the other you're thinking of (remember the wooly mamoth?) There's actually 19 that are technically part of the Smithsonian in DC, but not all are that close. The Natural History one is my favorite, they even have a giant squid on display right now, but the Air and Space Museum is probably a close second. They opened a second Air and Space Museum in a giant hangar near Dulles Airport that is fantastic; they've got a full size mock up of a shuttle Discovery in there.

The Smithsonian includes museums and reseach centers as far away as a Panama though, I was just being pedantic. :p

In '96' we visited my former mom-in-law in Silver Springs, the week of 4July (my b-day). On the forth we went to the Mall, walked all over. It was awesome to see Humanity visiting our Nations Capital, I heard every language, and saw every color of skin. We stayed for the fireworks that nite. We sat east of the Washington monument. It was illuminated, with all the flags flying, the National Symphony playing off to the side, people of all walks sitting on blankets all around us. Then the fireworks began behind the Lincoln memorial and the Washington Monument........an awesome day to be an American. The only problem is I haven't been able to enjoy fireworks since.22086

It's funny but living so close (about forty minutes) we really take DC for granted. Around here all anyone talks about with DC is traffic and crime. I get down there about once a year, but it's always 'damn I have to go into DC.' I guess part of it is that the schools around here go almost every year so by the time you graduate high school you've seen everything down there about eight times.

The most fun I've had in DC was last year when my wife did a half marathon through the city. We rode the metro down and I rented one of the bikeshare bikes. There are 'vending machines' for them all over the city and you swipe a card and take it for a flat rate then return it at any other machine. I followed her race route through the whole city and just had a blast checking out the city from a slightly more mobile perspectice than I'm used to. Next time anyone goes to the city I highly recommend renting some bikes. They're good bikes for casual city riding too, built like tanks. :D

Quick reminder on quoting...

I've been seeing a few attempts to quote that aren't turning out right and thought I'd offer up why. If you'd like to fix your quotes read on. If not, just skip this post :)

When you click the "Reply With Quote" it wraps up the post your quoting and puts it between two "tags." These form a set of bookends inside of which the text to be quoted must be. They look like this: "
" sample text "" but without the quotation marks around the brackets (I did this hoping it will not display my quote as, well, a quote). The Reply With Quote button does this for you BUT if you delete either end or part of either end of the "Quote" brackets (including the brackets themselves) your quote won't display as a quote. instead we get to see [QUOTE=text] and the message you quoted as inline regular text. It makes it confusing, especially when there are several nested quotes.

Don't dismay! The fix is easy! Just make sure you see both the opening QUOTE block and the closing QUOTE block are complete. Even easier, if you want to delete some text inside the quote (especially if it's long post like mine here :p) delete away. Just be careful not to delete that opening "[" (bracket) around the ending /QUOTE or there won't be one. PM me if you need more info. Happy to help cafe-ers merrily quote all day long.

This message has been brought to you by....came into work only for a 9 o'clock meeting and get called 1 minute before the meeting to say it's been cancelled. It's an hour drive home :'(

You fail to note that mine is presented as "an idea", nothing more. Yours is presented as the answer. I'm sure you can see the difference. Whether you're willing to is another question. Why you need to dismiss my disagreeing with you, respectfully, as BS, that's yours to figure out. I don't think your view of things is wrong, and I paid you due respect. You're entitled to your view of things. I think Hikermom has a good point that Oz is, in part, asking for sympathy. I stand by my point, and hers, that while your and others' view that Oz needs to suck it up, toughen up, and hike on has merit, that presenting it to him as a fait accompli, gruffly, may not be helpful, and that considering that is worthwhile. Ultimately, Jacko's hike is his, and his state of mind, too. I wish him well in both and am happy to offer him friendship and a helping hand where I can, which is all I can do.

As to your comments about my or Hikermom's ability to comprehend this or that thing, I respectfully suggest that you consider the limits of your own comprehension and that a bit of humility and respect and compassion for others benefits us, one and all, and I bid you a good and happy day.

Oz:

Smithsonian's National Gallery of Art, Asian and African Art Museums, Museums of National and of American History are all great. Air and Space Museum is great, and of course the Capitol building and the White House are fine places to visit. Visits to Abe and to Thomas Jefferson are well worthwhile, too, as is a visit to the National Archives. Plenty of good places to eat, too - Adams Morgan offers the internationally most diverse collection of restaurants and is near the Red Line of the Metro, NW of the center of town.

Any of the above are among the many great things you can do in Washington. It's also a very walkable city - I did without a car and got by on foot, bike and metro during the two years I was there. Hope you enjoy it!
