Oz:

Smithsonian's National Gallery of Art, Asian and African Art Museums, Museums of National and of American History are all great. Air and Space Museum is great, and of course the Capitol building and the White House are fine places to visit. Visits to Abe and to Thomas Jefferson are well worthwhile, too, as is a visit to the National Archives. Plenty of good places to eat, too - Adams Morgan offers the internationally most diverse collection of restaurants and is near the Red Line of the Metro, NW of the center of town.

Any of the above are among the many great things you can do in Washington. It's also a very walkable city - I did without a car and got by on foot, bike and metro during the two years I was there. Hope you enjoy it!

Oh ya, National Archives is pretty awesome too. :)

22084Cool.

Oz, I am late w/ this suggestion and you've probably made your decision but if not, consider flipping up to the CT-NY border, then when you come back down, you can either start in NY and share NYC w/ your wife and the area cafe crew and hike down to VA where the VA crew would likely come meet you at the south end of Shenandoah or vice versa.

I don't remember my first 45 but my first album was "Surfin' Bird" by the Trashmen.I don't remember my very first 45 either but in the first half dozen were at least several by the Supremes, possibly Stevie Wonder as well. I'm a Motown girl.

Oz is not asking for sympathy. i hiked with him long enough to get to know him a lot better than you. hes homesick and rather tired of hiking among the frat party bubble. the best medicine is to stop thinking so much about his loneliness, not by dwelling on it and indulging in it.he needs to spend more time on the trail and less time in motels. he has too much opportunity to indulge in his depression. the side trip hes taking to dc is an excellent way for him to get away from the crowd.as far as respect and compassion, oz is family. he is my brother. i care about his trip, his physical and mental health, as much as anyone else here.

I totally respect that, Andy, and hope you know I have high regard for you as a person and a hiker - really enjoyed hiking with you in January and think the world of you. I'm not looking to direct fire at you or solicit it from you, or at anyone else.

I was concerned mostly that there was some, in my view, needless harshness directed at Hikermom, and I agreed that she had some valid points, the moreso, and felt it worthwhile to back up her contributions as sound, respectable and well-intended and not deserving of the unkind treatment. So far as I know them, I like everyone here and wish everyone well, am merely standing up for my view of things and for civility. It seems clear that Jack find's LW's and your prescription helpful and best for him, and his voice is without doubt the most important when it comes to his hike.

You fail to note that mine is presented as "an idea", nothing more. Yours is presented as the answer. I'm sure you can see the difference. Whether you're willing to is another question. Why you need to dismiss my disagreeing with you, respectfully, as BS, that's yours to figure out. I don't think your view of things is wrong, and I paid you due respect. It'd be a fine think if you did the same to others who don't see things exactly the same way as you. There's a lot of us! :sun

As been said before....Happy Flag Day!!

We're celebrating by taking our scouts out to our town center and holding a flag retirement ceremony where we will assist the town council in retiring old flags in need of it. Along with this we'll be displaying 6 historic flags and I can't wait to see the boys eyes as they see these for, probably, the first time.

Afterward, our town hosts it's first outdoor movie of the season (free) and we'll be watching "National Treasure." No fireworks but for a little town our size. Perfect. :clap

Depends, are we feeding the hikers canines, feeding the hiker's canines or feeding the canine hikers... Or maybe best of all, feeding the canines hikers?

you can hang your hammock inside the shelter while your wet dog walks over everyones down sleeping bags.
you'll need the heat.

Decent size town with plenty of restaurants, shopping & hotels. Plenty of waterfalls close to the road to check out, cog railway, or drive up Mt Washington. Ski lifts up Cannon Mt, Loon & Wildcat. Don't know. IMHO good sense of humor but not that much musical talent. Story I heard was Paul thought Peter Best was too good looking (did not want competition) so he had him replaced with Ringo. In the later years Paul would redo Ringo's drum work for the albums (to improve the quality). Ringo got mad and thought about quitting, but decided to hang around since the paychecks were good.

Don't have to be fat and rich to play golf. I love it and I am neither. :)

I just never had any friends yet to take me to the golf course. I do play basketball three times a week. I'm the oldest slowest guy out there. Old fat white guy can't jump, but I can sure chase those kids around.

I love going to the driving range, gets out tons of frustration, I just put a mental image of someones face on that little ball, and Whacko! all better!

In high school I took a girl on a date to the driving range where they provided old clubs for you to use. So we both get a basket of balls and start hitting them. She eventually breaks her club, and I said don't worry about and went back to get another for her. Not too many swings later she breaks that one too. At that point I just said here why don't you let me finish your basket too. We both got a good laugh out of it, but needless to say I never took her to the driving range again.

Ok soo.. this is my last post in the Cafe. It's been really a lot of FUN.. thanks so much for all the laughs, support and friendship. It's been more than I ever expected. I love you guys (and gals) to the moon and back. :)

I was extremely hurt (still am). The post insinuated that "others" feel negative things about me as well. That's hitting below the belt, causing me to feel so singled out and unsure, now, of all ones "friends". And then, not one person "talked" to me, in the thread, right after "the bomb" was dropped on me. Once "the cat was out of the bag" someone needed to tell me what was up with that. I was just sittin there "holding it". If y'all had told me, kindly, how you were feeling- I would have been very defensive, at first, and then I would have apologized ... the whole thing would have ended well, IMHO.
Just start "talking".... Yeah, y'all were talking alright, just not to me. Bad HM... to the "corner" with you! Not a "room", HB! ;)
I can't deal with that.... If someone starts something... there needs to be a finish. If I started something- I don't think the proper finish was to bite my head off, spit it out on the floor and walk away... that's just me.

I'm guilty of "finger wagging" at times and more. Shoot me. I'm really sorry about that, I do that, sometimes. It's one of my many faults.

I officially bequeath, my spot, in the dirty dozen, to LW. A perfect fit! :) Embrace the suck for real.

HB... you say that the internet is just words but I remember the time when someone came into the Cafe and told you, you were being a weenie (or something to that affect) for complaining about all the damage & what you were going through when the storm hit LI. It's just words... uh huh! Then, when you called this person on it, instead of "owning it" and apologizing that person blamed their "words" on the fact that they had just been "traumatized" by doing a rescue volunteer job.
Words can sting and hurt in person and on the internet. I know you've heard it said that words can hurt a person more than a physical blow, sometimes. The good thing about "the net" is that we can control the "pain".. love it!! :)

If someone posts offensive stuff, and then hides behind the phrase... "I'm just calling it like it really is" & sayin you are the one that is just being sensitive"... that's BS, sometimes. (there's a more technical word for it... it's called "projecting") It's never the person's fault.. always someone else. Got it! ;)

I do think we should change from it's just talkin to- it's just BS'in. That seems more appropriate, sometimes. :)

Someone "typed" that freakin Ridge Runners are only good for picking up garbage. REALLY? That's irresponsible posting, IMHO. Typing that all shelters and trail magic should be banished on the AT is another example of irresponsible posting on an Appalachian Trail (White Blaze web site) It's what makes the AT the trail it is.. it's different from the other trails. (the good side and the bad side of it) Those naysayers bug me to death. Sorry got a lil side-tracked. :)

I'm not a good fit for this place on so many levels. I've done well for being meee!! :banana

I will be posting on other threads, if something interests me- if I can offer a shuttle or helpful advice, other than that... I will not post on another controversial thread. There's way too many A-holes, that post on those threads. I can't deal, I tried .....FAIL!!

This is a humor thread & my post has been wayyyy too serious. Carry/hike on my friends... I'll always love ya- whether you like it or not ;)
# justshootingstraightfromthehip

Don't bother to respond to what I wrote on this thread - I won't see it! Once I hit the reply button I will never click on this thread again.. that's a promise. I feel most comfortable this way. :) It's all good!!

To any of you out there that are thinking of joining this group of fine peeps!! I highly recommend this place, seriously. They are a fine and extremely funny bunch- they will always be near and dear to my heart, forever!!

From the drama Queen.... HIKERMOM! Take care but mostly have FUN!! If any of you are coming to my area, I want to see you for sure!! The welcome mat is still out for any of you. PM me if you want to talk or make plans for a visit!!

every once in a while, its a good idea to step away from here and get out and walk.
one of the benefits of hiking, specifically hiking solo, is no words.
language can be used to communicate, and language can sometimes be divisive.used to hurt.
words can only be hurtful if you empower the speaker by responding to those words.

hikermom, i also remember the time after the sandy when i got into it a bit with lone wolf.a few days later fidjit and dot.com offered to come from texas to help with the relief effort. my response was to tell them not to come, that there were people in their own backyard that probably needed as much if not more help than some of our own.they are true trail angels in every sense, but lone wolfs words did have an effect upon my thinking.it hurt a bit at the time, nbut there was truth in some of what he had said.

you see we all like to hear what we want to hear, and it ruffles our egos when someone doesnt agree with us. the key is to get beyond ego, and stop listening to anyone but your own heart, regardless of what comments are made.beyond the ego, we are all the same.made of the same stuff.and again, opinions are opinions, nothing more. any one persons opinion is equally valid.and sometimes mine are wrong. every persons reality is subjective to their life experience and colored by their own personal journeys.the trail changes whether we want it to or not. everyone who contributes here on whiteblaze loves this trail, and as we are a rather large community, we have different visions of what we think the trail should be, most of which do not jibe with reality.
but at the end of the day, we share that common bond, and at the end of the day its all good.

Used to have a Play Day cart. It was the best. Used to play 3-4 times a week religiously. This time of year in FL we used to get crazy deals. All the golf you could play in a day. Sometimes we'd get in 54 holes. Could always shoot at least a 95 but broke 90 pretty regular usually right around 87. Learned a long time ago there ain't nothin' wrong with bogey golf. On any given day you can take 100 average golfers and only about half of them if that are gonna break 100. Only about 20 are gonna break 90 and only about 3 are gonna break 80. And that's playing by the rules, the real rules.

Our course is not as groomed as we would like so we usually play you can "fluff" up your lie a little. I like to play by the rules and usually shoot in the low 90's from the white tees. My lowest score ever was an 80. I have shot par one time on 9 holes. Never had an eagle yet or a hole in one but still hopeful.
