Our course is not as groomed as we would like so we usually play you can "fluff" up your lie a little. I like to play by the rules and usually shoot in the low 90's from the white tees. My lowest score ever was an 80. I have shot par one time on 9 holes. Never had an eagle yet or a hole in one but still hopeful.
I've only ever shot par once and that was on an 18 hole par 3 course. (LOL) Lowest score ever was a 77 but that was on a course with a really low slope rating. No eagles, within 5" of a hole in one.

I use to practice hitting a ball up and over the goal post at my local High school football field....from about three feet away..up, got pretty good at it to....open the club face on a SW to full on open...put the ball as far forward in my stance is as humanly possible...a very short back swing, and a follow thru very high, emphasis on the high follow thru...that ball would shoot straight up in the air and over the post...though on occasion I'd hit the ball with the leading edge......bingo...still haven't found those balls yet, but they out there. :D

You can also do that shot with a closed face on a wedge, play the ball to the back of your stance and swing down on the ball, pops it up and little chance of blading it.

K was beautiful, though I didn't love the ski-trail approach, would have preferred the wilderness route. The one good thing was the continuous fine views of the Whites and opening views northward to fellow VT 4K peaks. It was an A day for views - Mt. Washington to the Adirondacks. Camped in a flat area just east of the summit was a hiker, Greg from Mass, who was good company and took a few pictures of me. I caught one of him at his camp on the way down.

I enjoyed it. Was a great day. Didn't love the ski resort - prefer mountain in its natural state. But it was OK for a late afternoon quickie. I will do the A.T. across the Coolidge Range some time - this whetted the appetite.

That's where we got it from. They told me it tasted similar to potatoes. We boiled it and smashed it and put butter and salt on it, but I never thought it tasted like potatoes. Have tried it at least a dozen times. There used to be a Cabbage Palm Festival in LaBelle, FL every year. Never been but I guess it was a pretty big local deal. I did know these black ladies that had a restaurant there that made a killer sweet potato pie. Whenever we went through there we made sure to stop.

It runs near the top of Killington, but not over it. Near the Cooper Lodge shelter, there's a spur trail to the summit that gains about 350' in about 0.2. I looked down the last of its route to the summit, and it *is* steep. It's worth the trip on a clear day. Outstanding views, and the summit area is pretty, though marred by a few communications towers.

They sell the Heart of Palm in the grocery stores in FL. I had it a long time ago and didn't like it. It seems to sell pretty well. There's got to be a good way of preparing it.
Key to good eats: wild hearts. Not a stand-alone dish, best served with flinthead. :eek:

Yes you have to kill the tree to get the heart. No easy job. Not worth it in my opinion. Starving would be another matter. I may try and make the Cabbage Palm Festival this winter in LaBelle just out of curiosity.

Aw man, Lou! That stinks! It's a hassle to get GMC stuff, too - probably was moreso then. I stopped at Sam's in Hadley, MA on the way up to K Sat. May be the only place outside VT you can lay your hands on GMC maps - I picked up Mansfield and K-area maps. At least now, if you're patient and trust the mails, you can order GMC maps and books online. And I think I've seen the LT book at Barnes and Noble, come to think of it.

The ice cream shop closest to the 'trail' (it's actually the cobblestone road at that point) in Harper's Ferry has incredible custard. Last Summer after a weekend hike I wanted a root beer float, but hadn't considered how it might work out with custard so I was a bit nervous... Holy crap. Best root beer float ever. I highly recommend one if you're passing through HF, particularly on a hot Summer day. :)

Did 28 mile yesterday and 18 or 19 today.

Biggest problem out there is the kids with it who have no concept of "containment".
They will mingle and share space with unaffected people with no idea that they should really quarantine themseves.

I have been hiking the AT but this trip has also surprised me by the opportunity to immerse myself in the "real" America.
I have been overwhelmed by the welcome (and the sincerity of it).
I am sure that despite the warnings of those that were unhappy with the outcome of the Yankee War of Aggression that the north will continue the wonderful people contact of this trip.
As well as hiking the AT I am being a tourist at three miles per hour.
I have found that enjoying this is more important than the "purity" of my hike.
As far as I am concerned there is no possible way to hike "wrong".
It truly is all good.

One of my friends just bought the Arc Blast 3200 at Trail Days. She's either on the trail right now or will be soon. I retired from my main job (steel mill) in 2003, worked about 5 more jobs after that but decided I had enough in 2011. Not enough money, just enough of working.

I had been working since I was 17 and it was a difficult transition. I still think about going back to work sometimes and then talk myself out of it. It gets easier with each passing year.

My dad is 82 years old and has been semi-retired for 17 years. He is one of those who had a hard time.

Speaking of beards my wife has never liked me in a beard. Since I have become clean shaven I ran out of razor blades. We bought a 10 pack at Wallymart and when she saw the price she said "Grow your beard back!"

I have the worst beard ever at the moment. I can't believe my wife hasn't made me shave it yet. I let my goatee go for about three months, then let the rest gof the last month... The goatee grows well, but the rest is terribly patchy and thin in spots. I'm getting laid off at the end of next week and just figured I should look like a total bum for that occasion. :D

Week from Saturday going from Hot Springs, NC to Waynesboro, VA. That is assuming the old body holds up OK.

My wife doesn't care for facial hair, so usually never go for more than a few days. It will be nice to not have to shave for over a month this summer. And not have to wear long pants. Not have to go to work. Yeah, coming to think of it I really am looking forward to this hike! :sun

Yes, but it is only time I can get off. I teach normally mid-Aug to mid-May, then teach as much extra as I can mid-May to June to have the $ to go in July. Better to hike in hot weather than not hike at all. Plus growing up in South Florida and working in Houston for 18 years I probably have a littler more tolerance for the heat than some. I have enjoyed my spring break and Thanksgiving break hikes, but a week at at time (some times only a few days with family events) is not going to get me to Maine soon enough.

Never saw snow until I was 20, so I guess I am probably a little better with the heat than the snow. The Smokies with snow and ice was interesting though.
