So what did ya do this weekend? - I took Rugby on a bike ride. He did three miles. - My knee pops & klicks.

Had a nice hike along the Holyoke Range this afternoon/evening, made far more interesting than it needed to be by the fact that trail blazings are so bad on the side trails. Had I doubled back on the Metacomet-Monadnock/New England Trail, all would've been fine, but I opted for variety. Finally, using my navigation skills, found my way to a road and walked almost two miles by road back to my car. Nice thing was, as it was after dark, the view of stars and of the hills at night was very nice. :)

Yeah - that figures - I went rock climbing on Saturday in NC and camped out hoping to climb Sunday - - started raining when I was falling asleep and I knew the climbing was off for Sunday - still fun being in the woods though - I'm going running in the morning before work even if I'm jumping mud puddles - - we really need the rain here too - - no complaints.

Same thing walk in coolers are made of. Really heavy duty corrosion resistant aluminium is very expensive so they use a lesser aluminium and galvanize it. The kind of aluminium you see the coast guard use for their small craft goes for $400 to $500 a sheet.

Got two packages today. Cuben fiber is ridiculously light. ZPacks is great. The most expensive 3 ounces for me ever. The Trail Designs Tri-Ti ULC came also with the new additional riser to make it more efficient. The riser was free. I saved all this weight so I could go up 8 ounces and get a much better sleeping pad.

One week until the trail. Life is good.

I want to do something for the trail - a project - I have the winter to think about it but could start it in the winter. I think that my best idea yet would be bear boxes for the Georgia section but this has been shot down on this site. I don't want to get too serious here in the cafe but would like some casual responses. Let's say I donated a week this spring - what would be a good service project? I can work like an animal (I'd like a project that involves a physical and logistical challenge for myself) and I'd be willing to invest a few bucks (not a fortune but say a budget of $1000). What needs doing? For me, it would be best to keep it in the south - - - blazing? shelter work? trail work? bear boxes? I'm donating a week and I'm open ......

That's a great idea - I have a wood-shop - where is one or more needed - I'll install it (or them) - - so often I run the trail and don't think about junctions. Do I need someone's permission to install such a sign? (I know this is a little outside the Cafe so if we keep going, I'll move the post) Thx.

Venom potency is a relative thing. Our tiger snake is reputed to have the most toxic of all snake venoms but it's got piddly little fangs so hardly injects any.
A black widow wouldn't have that big a set of fangs either.

Diplomatic immunity ain't what it used to be sadly.

It's just that over here we tend to happily criticise all politicians and rarely promote either side so it's very fair.
I think it's because when you're forced to vote you tend to vote against someone rather than for someone.

so apparently we have to come up with some hiking humor being that this is in the hiking humor forum anybody know any funny walks?

Fine, then I'll repost this:

A day hiker is walkng up to the shelter when he sees a thru hiker with a rod and reel fishing in the privy. He walks over and asks, "What in the world are you doing in there"? The thru hiker says, "I dropped my jacket in and I'm tryin to get it out".

The day hiker looks in at the jacket and says, "You're not acually gonna wear that are you"? The thru hiker shakes his head in disbelief at such a ridiculous question and replies, "Of course not! There's a Snickers Bar in the pocket"!

I believe you're talking about the one that Rocket Socks told a while back:

...I roll in off the trail into a hostel to find everyone laughing around a camp fire. After pleasantry's had bring exchanged I joined inon the fireside chat. After about a minute or so later I wasn't quite sure what to make of the conversation, one person would say a number ,and everyone would laugh, very odd indeed.I leaned over to the fella that was sitting next to me and quietly asked, whats going on,the man replied,"Oh,well everyone he has stayed at this hostel before, and there is this kind of a joke book that is written on the wall inside inside one of the bunks, and sense everybody here has read all the jokes before, they just say the numbers and everyone knows what joke there talking about, lot quicker that way" Thats pretty cool.I turned in for the night, and in the bunk where I'm sleeping, there on the wall is the joke book,Cool.I stayed up all night reading the little joke book. The next morning when I awoke everyone was outside having breakfast and had a fire going with coffee in a pot,Nice.I joined them, and decided to tell a joke I had read the night before,#25 I exclaim, and no one said anything hmm, that was a pretty good joke.Let me try again,#39,everyone stopped and looked at me but again no one laugh.OK,this is the best joke I've read last night and they are sure to laugh at this one,#17,and again no response, very strange indeed.I wondered over to the fella that had given me the skinny on the jokes last night and said,"Whats the deal here that was the best joke on the whole wall,I don't get why people didn't laugh"To which the fella replied,"Well,I guess some guys can tell a joke, some can't" Ba dump bump!I sure hope you have found this funny my friend, cause last time I told it,didn't work either.HeHeHe:)happy trails

I gave her to my niece when I inherited my Dad's F-150

I can tell a story about someone who made hiker stink seem positively aromatic.
In my youth in Albany (Australia not NY) a dead sperm whale washed up on a beach about 80 miles away on a remote beach.
My older brother and some friends drove out in a couple of cars to have a look.
One of his mates walked up on top of it.
As he stood on the top the whale blubber collapsed under him and he sank to his armpits.
The whale had been dead for some time.
Despite numerous dips in the ocean (it was winter) he was required to ride in the back of the utility the whole 80 miles home.:)

Hey Ozzy, when are you going to be on the AT? I'm thinking we need to have a cafe get together. Hopefully somewhere in the south. Maybe two get togethers. One for the south and one for the north.

That's one issue I did not have. Actually that truck was prolly the best vehicle I ever had. Got it for $2000 in '99. I put a new starter on it and that's it. Unbelievable.

A hiker is stumbling through the woods totally drunk when he comes upon a

preacher baptizing people in the river. The drunk walks into the water and

subsequently bumps into the preacher. The preacher turns around and is

almost overcome by the smell of booze. Whereupon he asks the drunk, Are

you ready to find Jesus?

Yes I am replies the drunk, so the preacher grabs him and dunks him in

the river. He pulls him up and asks the drunk, Brother have you found Jesus?

The drunk replies, No, I havent. The preacher, shocked at the

answer, dunks him into the water again, b ut for a bit longer this time

He pulls him out of the water and asks again, Have you found Jesus, my

brother?

The drunk again answers, No, I have not found Jesus.

By this time the preacher is at his wits end so he dunks the drunk in

the water again, but this time he holds him down for about 30 seconds

When the drunk begins kic king his arms and legs, the preacher pulls him

up. The preacher asks the drunk again, For the love of God, have you

found Jesus?

The drunk wipes his eyes and catches his breath and says to the

preacher,

Are you sure this is where he fell in?

2013 thru hike with 25yo son Daniel.
Plan has been about 24 March start after 2-3 weeks getting to Amicola via Italy and Netherlands.
Having discussions with son this weekend as wife pushing for us to go direct to AT from Oz and "get this thing over with".
I think son might appreciate budget drop that would result as he's talking about buying a car in USA and shipping it back. Would also fit in with road trip after Katahdin if we have any of our 6 months visa left.
If we do go direct may move start date forward a week. I'm probably paranoid but I want some trail under my belt before the Easter weekend.

Well the idea came out of the fact that a round the world ticket is little more than a ticket to the USA. Throw in that I have an octogenarian aunt in the Netherlands that I want to see and we both have an interest in Roman history and it sort of falls into place.

Love the drunk joke HB!
