What got me most riled up is that there were three of us on that paddle keeping a journal.
The comment (with universally offensive in cybet space CAPITALS) was posted only on the one journal kept by a female.
Aquablazing is increasingly popular - we know of at least 15 others doing it this week.
The ATC has clearly had a policy of "don't want to know" in the past.
I was not misled by a canoeing firm but the large number of journals opening stating they were doing it.
As a relatively "high profile" hiker due to my involvement in the cafe, I will do the missing miles or not claim accreditation. To anyone else considering aquablazing I say DO IT! But don't say much about it or the ayatollahs of the white blaze will hound you.
HYOH is a statement that leaves a very sour taste in my mouth because nearly everyone who makes the statement has in their comments immediately preceding that mantra made it clear that they think you should be hiking it their way. HB's quote of "you're doing it all wrong" is actually a parody on this very issue. I don't think HB is in the group I am annoyed at by the way. People may read that into my comments but I definitely view HB as someone who correctly understands HYOH (even though he is more a purist than I am).I like "Mags" "Hike my hike Dam it"...it was one of the first pieces I read here a couple years ago, and it was very telling to a newbie like my self. I had no idea there was such disdain amongst a group that I previously thought were laid bake and easy going. Now I've come to believe that's it's just a by-product of the internet, and that there is not as much animosity face to face...I also think this fella placed that comment there to inflame and that it was calculated. He knows right well who you guys are, it's a close knit community and word travels like wild fire...it was a bitch move the way he went about it.

Indecently loved the pictures, made me want to take a canoe trip...and the air and space museum too, love that place. Much as the term HYOH has left you with a bad taste...I'm glad you guy's your hiking your own hike, and were it me, I wouldn't change a thing. Except maybe ask if they had a green canoe instead of red...I like green.:D

It's not really about hiking styles, it's about attitudes..... there are no bad hiking styles, but there are definitely bad attitudes !! (on both sides of the "purist" fence)

oz, i remember when we met again in damascus, and you had told me how many nights you'd actually spent in the woods, i laughed and said'you and i have had very different hikes".and although i have ribbed you quite a bit about your"style",you know ive loved how you've been able to get so much out of your journey.
next year, im starting out on my own long walk, and i wont know where that path leads me until im out there doing it.i feel sorry for the guys whose only pleasure in life is to enforce the rules, any and all rules, in an attempt to suck the pleasure out of someone elses experience.
im not in it for the patch, im not in it for any form of special recognition, im in it because i recognize a thru hike to be one of the most enriching human experiences one can have.you, violet and army ants journals bear that out.
and for those who attach such glorified importance to this "achievement",
its only walking.

I think you and I are on the same wave length HB.
If I had come alone and not "hooked up" with the group as I did, my hike would have been much more like the one you will take.
But it didn't.
The detours to town, the time spent discovering America as well as hiking the Trail have made this a totally different journey from what I expected.
When I did my 2011 Bib hike, my focus was the hike. I think I did that hike the way you would do the AT. Perhaps if you came to do the Bib, you would find yourself drawn to look at the surrounds of the trail the way I have over here.
It's all about what you want.

But it does piss me (in the full local sense:D) when people try to make others conform to their perceptions of right and wrong.
These people should go to things like the Lincoln, FDR and Jefferson memorials and actually READ the words they uttered.

You know, there's a lot of good that has come from having the internet, but there's also been a whole lot of bad that has come from it as well. I am fervently hopeful that this will not influence you to think badly of your experience here in the US.

Hey its America you can watch it 3 times if you like, or not even once if you want. :DUp on SOAPBOX: Hey its America, you can whiteblaze it, yellowblaze it, aquablaze it, blueblaze it or whatever the heck you want and if anyone has a criticism, they should keep it to themselves. This is AMERICA not SOVIET RUSSIA where you MUST do EXACTLY what they say and no divergence there from.

Don't want to make any further comments on certain negative issues but I wish to clarify something.
I am not threatening anyone.
I do not wish to have a fight with anyone.
But hiding behind anonymity and posting antagonistic comments on a womens journal is the action of a spineless misoginist.
PM me on Whiteblaze and I'll happily discuss anything.
Posting shyte behind a faceless screen is the actions of a person deserving of every negative description I or anyone else has posted.
I have never disputed the correctness of what is being said about the aquablazing.
Go back and read what I am saying about your methods and mindset.

i can see that trail journals seems to have attracted the people whiteblaze cast aside.they sound like bitter outcasts. i posted a hyoh thread today on trail forums and received a curt response.there was a thread a few weeks back, an if you read it, theres a few rants about wb's"heavy handed moderation" that are almost comical. one of them seems obsessed with whiteblaze although he was so critical of the site it was funny.apparently they prefer a forum where its acceptable to be an a**hole(anthole)

Yeah....when will people stop being critical of the way others choose to hike the trail....I mean, read this one about hikers who do choose to follow the white blazes...

"I do believe these people will never find an answer to any of life's mysteries on the trail as they are following a doctrine and will not be swayed from their
path. They will finish the trail with a righteous sense of accomplishment and purity that they fully deserve. But they will not really finish the trail in
any way changed or improved or independent. They will have blindly and doggedly followed a doctrine tthat they view as "the one true path" from Springer to Maine.
They will not be changed by the experience other than to be more sanctimonious pricks afterwards than they were before."

You can always read that kind of rationalizing in the shelter logs in Maine. Always written by those who skipped a state or two because of the heat or the poison ivy or whatever. They seem to have some underlying envy of those who did hike the whole trail and find it necessary to label folks who did as purists. Lonely, bitter iconoclasts who couldn't possibly have derived an iota of goodness, knowledge or pleasure from their sanctimonious hike because they were so focused on following every white blaze.

It cracks me up.

There's just something about Springer. I've been there many times. Every time I go it's just - WOW! So this is where it all starts. I've heard the same about the wow factor of Katahdin. But, I've also been told to be ready for the "that's it", the "is that all there is" feeling. The not so wow factor. I've got to find out for myself. One way or another, I've got to see it. And when I do you can bet your butt I'm gonna give myself a gold star. And Coach, I'm gonna get me an embroidered gold star and sew it right on the front of my doo rag.

Also KK has pointed out I sound critical of whiteblazing faithfully.
Not at all.
I would like the ATC to actually give a "better" certificate to purists. They genuinely deserve it.

Personally, I don't go in for the OCD, gotta pass all white blazes view. Particularly, in the Presidentials, I'd much rather do the harder hike, crossing all principal summits and Mt. Clay, since the views are better and experience more pronounced. For purposes of awarding the patch, which is beside the point, I gather that the ATC does allow such blue blazing.

Most important, as I see it, Oz, is: are you enjoying, learning, sharing? Taking in the wonders of the outdoors? If so, what matter is it whether you can apply to get a patch? Did you have a ball aquablazing? GREAT! Case closed. In years to come, if you don't go back and fill in that patch of Virginia trail this year, you can say you hiked most of the A.T. and rode the beautiful, world-class Shenandoah for the rest. Bully for you! The rare person who carps at that has issues vexing them that shouldn't vex you.

Meanwhile, I had a nice day's adventure yesterday in the Whites. Had planned for a long, three-day weekend, but work cut that short - client needs me in town this afternoon, meeting her in a bit, and the judge ruled in a big case I'm handling, much earlier than expected and in a way nobody expected. Had hoped to hike Monroe and Eisenhower today, with a friend spotting Car 2 at Edmands Path, Car 1 at Ammo Trailhead/Cog Parking. That would've meant about 3300' elevation gain, most ascending the Ammo, which I did last year.

Hiking solo, I had to park at Edmands, which made for a 3750' gain, big compared to what I've done this year. I stayed at Chet's Place - such a nice guy, nice to seem him again - and, due to excitement and a bit of caffeine, iced tea from dinner on the go in CT, I could not sleep! Frustrating. Finally dozed off about 4:35 am, let myself sleep til 8:52, awakened by a barking dog. Four hours had to do, knew I had a big hike ahead. Stopped for breakfast, big one, at Flapjack's on the Kanc in Lincoln. Ron Comeau didn't disappoint, the food was great.

Started the hike at 11:05, slowly but surely made my way up the Pleasant Dome It's a beaut. Bugs were minimal, only really bothered me in the last mile of descent, when I stopped once. The views were astounding once into the scrub and above. At the summit, at 3:39 pm, I decided an attempt of Monroe was unwise. It had taken me almost as long the climb Ike as it took me to climb Washington last June (5.5 h via the Jewell) and July (5 h via Tuck's). Part of that was that the trail yesterday was quite a bit rougher, but most of it is I'm not in the shape I was in this time last year after 5 months at a desk, even moreso than usual, with less time for big hikes. So I decided to do a lollipop hike, going down Ike's southern slope and linking up with the Crawford Path/A.T. If I felt like it, I'd go down the link up the A.T. at the base of Pierce's cone, 1.2 miles away, 400 feet lower, then return back to Edmands Path.

Didn't feel like it, the legs got twitchy in fact right then and there. Time to head back to the barn. The A.T. traverse below Eisenhower's cone is rough, but has some extraordinary views southward, over to the Montalban Ridge and up to Monroe and Washington. Though I wish I could've gotten Monroe, too, I'd say this is one of the most beautiful hikes I've ever had the fun to do. I think the views from Eisenhower's summit and slopes rival those of Mts. Lincoln and Lafayette. The Presidential Range is immense and awe-inspiring.

Pics are loading slow now and I have to go. Will upload some later.

Oz gets an Aqua Star, to go with the gold one he will eventually get:D

A friend is going to visit her daughter and grandchildren in Sandy Hook, CT and she has agreed to let me ride along as long as she doesn't have to go out of her way to drop me off on the AT. So, I was looking at maps and the Companion and I notice that the AT crosses Interstate 84 (which is what we will be taking from Penn into NY) at 1,431.1 from Springer which is the Stormville Mtn Rd I-84 overpass. So, I appeal to all you Yanks that know this area. Is there someplace that we can pull over so I can get up onto the overpass? If not, what would you recommend as the best way for me to access the AT somewhere in this vicinity that won't take too much time off I-84?
