I'm not for hurting anyones feelings but when saying a word gets more attention on the news than a murder it's been taken a little too far.

I considered that, but there are two problems. The first being very complex involving the logistical problems of taking off, landing and wind vectors.

The second problem is it doesn't have a snazzy colour-based nickname :-\

With so many playing the game now it's just luck. But like someone in baseball said "you gotta be lucky to be good and you gotta be good to be lucky".

Red Aurebach used to say luck is a talent. Generally the result of a lot of hard work and preparation to be in the right place at the right time.

Wow, thanks to the kindness of KermitBoxer I will have a new pack to surprise my wife with! Great timing as our hiking season kicks into full gear next week. I'm hoping she'll come to SNP with me but if not I'll get her out pretty soon after. Hiking is my number one priority for my time off this Summer. :)

Sweet MD.. :) I hope ur wife hikes the SNP with ya...

I want to hike Old Rag, real soon, myself. If you guys hike it let me know what it's like. I'd like to hike it when the crowds are low....I've heard it's always crowded.

I want to hike Old Rag, real soon, myself. If you guys hike it let me know what it's like. I'd like to hike it when the crowds are low....I've heard it's always crowded.

I did it a few years ago as part of my first backpacking trip (had done lots of 'hike in' camping with scouts but never a true backpacking trip) and let me tell you it is awesome! Without a doubt the single best day hike I've ever done. The summit is completely breathtaking, there is one rock that is the obvious peak and if you stand on that it is just an incredible 360 degree view. I've been to the summit of Killington and though it was taller I think Old Rag was cooler. The highlight is the Ridge Trail though, it is so much fun... Just a long rock scramble with lots of options for routes. Some spots are pretty serious, with large drops and just a small ledge to walk across. It is definitely not for those with a fear of heights. :)

The crowds are the problem. We did it in November (cold!) and on the way back up (more on that in a second) we were literally in a constant line of people the whole way. We would scramble over the more difficult routes to jump ahead, but still there'd be more line once we got past. For a while we were stuck behind a troop of young Boy Scouts... Love scouts but man that was brutal.

Here's a trick; you can camp just below the summit on the Saddle trail side near the Byrd's Nest Shelter, which we did. Most day hikers hike Old Rag from the Ridge trail over the summit then down the Saddle trail, so if you camp on the other side you can be up early and headed the opposite direction. This means you get to summit first, when crowds are minimal, and spend as much time as you want there then do the rock scramble down against traffic. We did this, but we left our gear at camp so we had to do an out and back on the ridge trail... The way back was not fun with the crowd. This time around I plan to do the same, but take our gear with us so we can just continue on from the far side of the Ridge trail.

I'm hoping that by doing it early, in reverse and during the week we can avoid most of the crowds, but I can report back to you on that sometime next week if you'd like.

I also was lucky enough to be shown a 'secret' spring on top of the mountain by a local guide... He was reluctant but we really needed the water so he showed us. I'm fuzzy on the details but if you'd like I'll make good notes when I go and relay the info to you. :)

Hope that all made sense. I just drank way too much Mountain Dew and I'm typing like a madman.

No breaks either, gotta be read in one sitting. If you are standing it doesn't count either. Laying down is OK, so long as you have hiking boots on.

Thank you MD .... that was a GREAT post. I learned a lot! Take notes and relay the info to me... I would appreciate that soo much!! Mountain Mike is good with this kind of info too. You can ask him any question about the Whites in NH, he's like you with the detailed info... I love it-it's helpful! :)

Will do. I could try to tell you where the spring is now from memory, but details will be much more clear after I go remind myself. It was so cool, the guy was all hush hush and led us through some thick brush and there it was; an oasis near 3,000 feet.

I cannot recommend Old Rag enough though, I've been dying to get back since the minute I left. :)

Seems to me it's my best (and only) option! :p
