hey hikermom, i want to clarify something i stated on another thread, that employers are more interested in skill sets and experience than they are in someones thru hike.
i interview people for sales positions regularly and in most cases i tend to hire people with little or no experience, so that i can train them from day one to develop good work habits and train them to do the things i need them to do, day in and day out. if i had a choice between two candidates with equal experience, and one had completed a thru hike(patch or no), i would ask the hiker what he learned from his trip and base my decision on his answer.that answer could provide some insight into the kids character.id be more impressed if they spent 5 months working to help feed the poor.
this spring it seemed like quite a few young people were hiking the trail for no other reason than they thought it would look good on their resume, some of whom had neve hiked before. being somewhat traditional when it comes to the at, i thought this attitude was a rather sad one, and that they probably finish their hike as they started it. glad for it to be over so they could get on with their "real lives".i think that a completed thru can have some influence on an employers decion, but i would maintain, skills and experience weigh much more heavily in the decision than a 5 month walk in the woods.

Understood!! :) Shelby just put it on her resume in the "interest section" of the resume. She related to us that it made a good impression on the perspective employer. She said they talked about it a lot during the interview process. :)

My son says that the kids that his company hires don't know how to do the job they've been hired for... they don't know how to write properly etc...
He has to go back and walk them through all the mistakes they make in writing their reports and they still can't do it right. He blames the education system.... His wife can back it up b/c she was a teacher. :)

I asked my son if he thought they were just really lazy or did he feel like they don't know how to do their job. He had to think about for a minute ... he said it was hard to say but he's thinking a little of both. Either way they are useless.

As their manager, he picks up the slack for them and has to work many more hours than he should have too. It's really sad. He has a BIT degree from VA Tech & is looking for another job so he won't have to work 60+ hours a week.

A friend of mine came over the other day and noticed we had a 3-legged pig roaming around our yard. I explained that it was our pig, and that a more heroic creature couldn't be found. Two months ago we had a fire in the house, and the silly animal squealed it's head off to wake us, then charged inside the house through the pet door to make sure we were all awake. When it got to my son's room it was overcome by smoke, but still knew enough to crash through the window to get out of the house again. I swear if that pig hadn't alerted us, we'd all be gonners.

My friend then asked if that was how the pig had lost its leg, in its window escape. I told him that no, that wasn't how, and then explained that you just don't eat a pig like that all at once!
