The suggestion of a get together next year really appeals to me.
But timing a get together for me hiking and a bunch of you guys working etc is pretty difficult. Hard to organise firm dates etc.
THEN I HAD A THOUGHT!! Major moment! I don't get many.
My son and I have already decided that we will go off trail at one point next year, hire a vehicle and head back to Damascus for Trail Days.
I know it might be difficult for many of you but I reckon we could set up a Cyber Cafe at Trail Days.
It gives a firm date for everyone to plan for and I think a little marquee surrounded by cafe regulars' tents for 2 or 3 nights would be a hit.
We could have a little pen for Pepe and Eloise, some bear and rattlesnake pictures with various calibre sets of 5 bullets to throw at them. All with a big tank of water running through a SILWF and possibly mashed potatoes on hand.
Some smaller more informal get togethers elsewhere on the trail would still be nice, but as a major function I think this could be a winner.
I realise I can't organise much from this end but I'd be prepared to throw some $s towards helping.
We could all march in the Cafe T shirts.:banana

Yeah, I think we've run into them several times! The most memorable was a big group of them we ended up camping with after a long day hiking the section containing McAfee Knob in Virginia. There must have been 30 kids from the nearby university and enough beer to set up a saloon. We were treated to an evening of fight songs, falling into the creek, tent malfunctions, falling down the hill, partial nudity, loudness, and the highlight of the evening when one guy visited the privy and his buddies locked him inside. 15 minutes of hollering and threats and hee-hawing until they let him out.

For whatever reason, we were feeling pretty mellow that night and just decided it was best to sit back and enjoy the show. We got our small share of revenge the next morning, when we awoke, packed hastily in a persistent drizzle, and walked back up the hill past the bodies of passed-out campers lying in the mud and leaves, some in sleeping bags, some not. Nobody stirring. And it rained hard, all day *insert evil smiley**

Isn't a swagman like a hobo or something?
We had to learn "Waltzing Matilda" in music class in middle school.
Talk about learning a foreign language. Struggling through all that slang was harder than going up the approach trail to Springer. Just the first two verses broke my poor little brain.

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a coolibah tree,
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled:
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda, with me."

Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda, with me
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled:
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda, with me."

Down came a jumbuck to drink at that billabong.
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee.
And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag:
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda, with me."

Why don't you spearhead the movement?
I'm too tired to get involved.
It's been a tough morning. I had to hike with a full pack so as not to offend anyone else on the trail to a Smokies backcountry campsite while avoiding the 2 greedy rangers lurking in the undergrowth. I did manage to kill two birds with one stone, by putting my unleashed dog in my backpack, therefore fulfilling the requisite 35 lb understood to be a full pack. Unless you're a UL backpacker. Then I'll carry a chihuahua.

I, myself , would not pay to stay in Damascus for TDs (not that they don't need the money. There will be plenty of former and future and present thrubees staying at the campground). You could stay at the campground, but, hold on to your johnson (how's that for a refernce, Driver8?) as there will be many many bogans there (+1 for using new vocabulary word). I would rent a bike and ride up the Creeper aways and camp on the AT or drive up to Whitetop and camp there on the AT. Then just ride or drive to the event everyday.

Don't forget to see my friend, Larry (TOW) who lives right on the AT in town. You can't miss Crazy Larry's. His sidewalk in front of his place is the actual AT. Not many people can say that. Well, they could say that, but, it would not be true.

Sorry this post is so long. I know a lot of people will not bother to read it because it is more than two sentences. I feel sorry for the moderator who is assigned to me.

Excellent work, dogs truly are multi-use items on a hike. They dig "cat" holes for you, pull you up hills, locate the trail better than a GPS, can be used in place of bear bags/canisters and can even help by providing the requisite pack weight to qualify as a "real" hiker.

Plus, watching how other hikers react when they see that my dog is with me allows me to identify pricks rather quickly.

I am actually looking forward to meeting dogs on the trail, but I think they are best as "section hikers" and have doubts as to whether they really should be attempting through hikes. Mostly because of the extra hassle on their owners to be honest.
I can't take mine to the AT (cost, quarantine, her age etc) but have in the past taken her on short hikes.
Nearly all forest in Oz dogs are verbotten. Also we have poisoned baits all through our forests to kill feral animals.
Cats, foxes etc.
Due to her age, my son and I dubbed her "trailing dog" because she struggled a bit towards the end. Carried her a few kms sometimes.
I posted a pic of her a few weeks back sitting with one of the statues on Lake Ballard.

I heard what happens to Jet Skis.... don't buy them second hand unless you are willing to make some repairs.

I'm actually about to learn how to rebuild a carburetor, my girlfriend's father is going to walk me through it. We were more or less given a boat in the spring due to its condition, and I'm amazed we got a season out of it without doing major work on the engine (a Ford 351 converted to an inboard marine engine, coil, points, Holly 4 barrel, etc. I've got lots to learn over the winter and lots to fix in the spring). Still, should be fun!

I have a unique perspective as once a week 45 business professionals in different vocations get together for two hours. We talk about our services and work together to benefit the group. A good example would be, when I visit a client and clean up a pest problem, I can see that I won't succeed until the hording is controlled or cleaned out. So I recommend that person in professional clean up.. So there is a lawyer, construction, physical therapy, etc. We have a health care professional and a tax professional too.... The health care professional, she gave a 30 minute speech that was really eye opening two weeks ago. The paperwork she has to deal with is unbelievable, and she is responsible for all sorts of heath care at businesses, corporations - I will say it was very interesting talk.... Later......

Everything is packed except for the pack. I'm stopping at Mount Rogers Outfitters in Damascus to get a new ULA Circuit. My frameless 50 liter Lowe that I've been using since 1993 is getting old. I think I got my $100 worth out of it. Sent a package to Kinkora and will drop the second off in Damascus. I haven't even weighed anything! Sweet - The cafe is still here! Hey, where do I toss my pack? I don't want to hit any of the skunks, alligators, crocodiles, echidnas... Did this place turn into Animal Farm?

Honey Badger sends her regards. While I was out hiking, she met a mountain goat online and has moved to Olympic National Park. It seems they are going to start a new breed of Mountain Badger Honey Goats, or something. Fierce goats with teeth and claws, who obviously don't give a sh...darn.

Had a great hike. The only downside is that I am back, and there is waaaay too much time until my next backpacking trip! This trip was only supposed to be a short introduction to get my friends into backpacking. I did not expect it to take on a life of it's own...and it did. We ended up hiking in New Hampshire and Maine. So totally awesome!! So gorgeous! I have to admit this trip only fueled my desire to be out on the trail even more...

Here is a list of things that didn't happen on the hike.

On my hike, I didn't:
Get mugged, raped, stabbed, shot, pillaged, plundered, or otherwise violated
Have any bad encounters with dogs, or other unleashed wildlife (though, I did nearly step on a chipmunk...that would have ended badly for the poor guy)
Have non-stop horrible weather
Get lost
Have any gear issues
Lose my sense of humor

What did happen on the hike:
I had an amazing time
I got to enjoy many new trails
I got to partake of the huts, sleep out under the stars, and camp in my tent
I met lots of really neat people, from all walks of life...and heard wonderful stories (some from current thru-hikers)

So, what's new with y'all? I can see I have a lot of reading to do to catch up... Not sure that will happen for a bit, as I have a lot of work/emails to catch up on before I can spend too much time playing. Reader's Digest version of WB for the past couple of weeks?

Wait - Is that why Henrietta was in such a hurry to get away from Pepe??? I thought she was just smitten with the mountain goat she met online and THAT is why she was leaving so fast. I never saw the love child they produced, but the thought actually frightens me.

So nice of Train Wreck! Since you are hiking by yourself, are you carrying the other three people to sleep in that tent with you? Or, are the bears joining you at night.

A bit more adventure than bargained for on my "humdrum" hike in Sleeping Giant State Park yesterday evening. Ran into a bit of unexpected peril and saved three inexperienced hikers lost in the middle of the woods. Got a nice thank you from them once we reached home base safely, from them and a Hamden, CT seach-and-rescue team. Here's the story.

I got a late start after a long team meeting planning a state representative race I'm helping with, reckoned I'd squeeze in a few miles between 4:30 pm and dusk. Flashlight in tow, no water stowed, I routed myself with three goals in mind - 1) cover new trail in the 30+ mile system, coming closer to red-lining all trails, 2) get to a water source relatively soon, as there was no water where I started and I hadn't stowed more than 10 oz in my pack, and 3) avoid all copperheads in the park, which is known to have several. All that and enjoy a pretty hike on the first day of fall.

Headed out on the Violet Trail from Chestnut Lane, soon found that despite the plentiful rains of Tuesday's storm, the stream beds were all dry. That being so, decided to re-route from the north side of the park to the southwest corner, park HQs, where there's a water fountain and other facilities. Tapped the Red Square trail's northern end, a spoke, doubled back and used this trail to traverse the small range southward to the Yellow Trail. All new trail so far, as was the first mile or so of Yellow. Another half mile and I was about half-way done for the day, stopped at HQ for a bunch of water, filling my bottles, and a quick water closet break. By then it was 6:30 and I had a decision. Which way to go? I decided to take the Violet Trail, which made for a near-complete circumnavigation of the park. The Violet is reputed to be the easiest of the park's trails, that or the Yellow I'd just done most of. I'd done parts of Violet, including one stretch earlier in the evening, and it was all easy, so I decided to go for it. Flashlight? Check. Plenty of water. Good maps, and I've hiked this area numerous times, so I'll be fine.

Headed out, first covering a short, familiar stretch of Violet which which I'd done before. A short stretch new to me was a bit tricky, but there was plenty of light, so no problem. Then a bit of a climb, but still plenty of light and nothing too vexing. Once at elevation, the traverse along the north shoulder was easy. Reached a half-mile stretch I'd done before and blew through it, clicking on the flashlight as darkness became an issue. As I finished this stretch, I reached a tricky spot, the intersection with the Red Circle Trail. I had hiked this area of Red Circle and the part of Violet I'd just now done six months ago. Had noted then, in the broad daylight, that this area was confusing and it would take care to follow Violet eastward from this intersection.

First, I had to verify I had reached the intersection as this boulder-and-scree field does not yield obviously beaten trailbed. The ridgecrest above this area dips by a couple hundred feet into a notch crossed by the Red Circle just before you reach the streambed which runs along its side. I suspected I was close, looked uphill and south and saw the night sky past the dip in the ridge just as I stepped into the dry streambed. (Good thing I'd re-routed to HQ earlier, as this was to have been my water source. Back in March, the day after a big rain, you could hear the brook running and cascading from 0.1 away.)

Immediately saw Red Circle markings, shined the light on several trees to find a Violet directional arrow marking: so far, so good. The question was which way did the trail run, exactly? Could I find more markings, or something that looked like trail amid the rocks? No luck there, but I haltingly followed my nose toward a small notch that looked like a good place for the trail to run.

Then I got a big surprise. Mine was not the only light shining out there. At the top of the little notch I saw a light or two, and three guys - they were using their cells phones as lights, and one of them was on the phone with local 911 soliciting search and rescue, as I soon would find out. I called out, "Is that still the Violet Trail up there?" No response, but I heard them talking. Again,

"Hi, is that the Violet Trail?" The response:

"Are you with the Fire Department or Police?"

Didn't know what to make of that. Noticed they were smoking, figured they were camping out against park regs and maybe smoking pot - it was three guys in their 20s.

"Nope, I'm just a fellow hiker, Chris, and I'm following the Violet Trail to my car. Is this they way it goes?"

"Yeah, it looks that way."

"Cool."

They were were shocked, at first, at the thought that SAR, which they'd just called, would have gotten there.

After I explained to them that, no, I wasn't police or fire but I knew this trail system well, had a flashlight and good map, had heard that Violet was the easiest trail in the system and would be happy to shuttle them a couple miles in my car to theirs. They then put me on the phone with their SAR contact. I explained everything to her, told her we were routing to my car at the eastern Chestnut Lane trailheads where five or six trails converge, including Violet, and that it would take us 45 minutes to an hour to get there in the dark via flashlight and cell phone light.

So far, so good. The unexpected bit of extra adventure was that the only difficult stretch of Violet lay in the next half mile, which I had not yet seen. There were about five scrambly descending passes, a few of which required that I, leading the pack, hand back my flashlight to another hiker who shined the light for me to see and pick my way down. No 50 or 100-foot drop offs, but a few spots where you could easily fall 10 feet and bust your head or break a limb. Using common sense and hiking skill and taking care, we made it through fine. There were about half a dozen spots where the trail's routing was not obvious in the dark, and the purple blazing was not the best for visibility, but we kept finding shiny purple paint on trees confirming we were on course. I told them this part was much harder than I expected and that I was lucky to have come across them. I'm glad they were there along with me to do this tricky stretch. I've hiked in the dark before, on new trail even and on familiar difficult trail, but never on new trail this difficult.

Toward the end of the rocky stretch, we got a call from SAR, confirmed we were on course and due in maybe half an hour, and we'd call when we got to 10 minutes from home. Once we reached easier trail, we soon reached a trail crossing I'd seen earlier. I confidently declared we were on trail familiar to me, to my companions' relief, and that the rest of the trail was cake.

Now that everyone was relaxed, we joked about whether the news media would be there with SAR, one guy talked about a foxy local TV reporter gal he really hoped would be there and that became a running joke, and we talked about how they could brag to their friends about their heroic adventure in the woods. The grizzly bears they'd wrassled and slain. The forest fire they'd put out with their bare hands. And then I said, "And Man, you should've seen the snakes!" To which one of the guys said he had stepped over a snake just earlier in the day, for real. I had to ask.

"What color was the snake?"

"It was darker brown and lighter brown, back and forth."

"That was a copperhead, my friend. They're poisonous and very dangerous."

"Really?"

"Yes. Darker brown and lighter brown, alternating?"

"Yeah, that's it. I was scared of it and stepped around it carefully."

"Good thing, because they will bite and are poisonous. There are a lot of them in this park. I'm glad you saw it - they're easy to miss."

"Wow."

So for my three friends this was quite the perilous day. Lucky for me to have found them, even luckier for them that I stumbled upon them.

Taking care not to trip over a few tree stumps and a small rocky pass or two, we soon were home.

Waiting for us was a big red fire truck, three police cars, a paramedics' SUV or two and about 10 people. I got there first, waved my light and them yelled out that we were OK and the others were right behind me. SAR thanked me and I thanked them, as did the three young guys, who had only hiked a time or two before. SAR said they'd take the guys to park HQ, where they'd parked. I swapped out my sweaty synthetic shirt for civilian garb, gulped down some water, hopped in my car and headed home, safe and sound.

It ended up that in my 3:50 hike, including all breaks, I'd covered about 7 miles. Not bad, considering the roughness of some of the terrain and the hiking-in-the-dark bit. Some nice early fall color, some pretty new trail, including about half of what I had left to do in the park, and more excitement than I'd bargained for. Didn't take a single picture because of the low light. Will just have to remember this adventure in my mind's eye.

Driver, Nice story. To think if you had turned down a different trail those yo-yo's could still be wandering around.

Thanks, Rasty. I think all four of us were fortunate we bumped into each other. Better lucky than good!
