FC I posted o the thread about your NH Hike. Very ambitious, But I'm sure the kids will love it. PS: If you use the privy at Ethan Pond think of me. I helped clear the loads for the helo drops bringing the material in.

Thanks for the feedback, MM. We'll definitely play the trip by ear and adjust as we get "used" to the surroundings. We'll be sure that we give thanks at the privy :) Seriously, thank you for your service to the trail and hiking community.

Rasty what is the diff between Israeli cous-cous & say the Near East brand?

The Near East Brand is African cous-cous and is a very small. Israeli cous-cous is 10 times larger. The texture of the Israeli cous-cous is chewier and it tastes better. The cooking time is 8 minutes or so. There is also an Italian Version called Fregola which is drum toasted and some being very light and some becoming very dark toasted.

I was gonna ask you what it was like to have a birthday on the 4th of July. My brother was born Dec. 27th and my sister a year and a day later on Dec. 28th. Both always seemed to get lost in the Christmas cheer.

Well, it is a story that I enjoy telling. As a kid...it was a big family picnic, With many vets, so very patriotic. It was more that than MY day. But, when I became an adult, i traveled more, and having that day, i could always weasel a few days, and then I would kind of automatically have dibs on that week. I can tell you that I have been home maybe 10 of the last 36 Independence days. And maybe the best 'Happy Birthday' part is that all those adventures were somewhere in the US, so I just roll on up to what ever is going on and announce that today is also MY day.......Party Time!!!!!!!!:banana:sun:clap:dance:jump:jump:bse:b anana:D:eek::sun:)

That's really cool. I always tried to single out each day for my brother and sister. It was kinda like you said with you. The partying and celebration would just continue on for a few more days. You know how it's kind of a let down the day after Christmas? A deflation if you will. Well after that was over it was BANG!. Party time all over again. And the next day too. That was cool.

New place to stay near the AT

Narrows, VA
2 miles from mp631 on the AT near Pearisburg, VA.
All things a hiker needs you can hit with a softball from the front porch.supermarket..restaurant.laundry.and post office are all less than 70 yrs from the Inn. We have rooms for the hikers at 45.00/night and do pickups for 10.00/carload roundtrip back to the trailhead.

Or do you need to be 70 for the services?

Did you see this new hostel on the home page? Sounds like a neat place, but if its a 70 year walk to get to services then thats a little too spread out for my taste. Maybe its an easy hitch or something.

New place to stay near the AT

MacArthur Inn
Allen Neely

Looks like a really nice place. Not your typical hostel. Not a bad deal at all considering the prices of the other packages.

States visited. Green equals lived in, blue equals spent many weeks in, brown equals spent at least a few nights in, pink equals just visited, and white equals ain't been there yet.

Cool graphic, BB. How did you do that? I'd like to do it, meself. Is there an app or website where you can do it? I've lived in 8 or 9 states + DC, visited 42 - missing WI, SD, ND, MT, ID, OR, NV and AK. Been a while since I added a new one, in fact.

Ain't that good. Wish I could do stuff like that as well. Don't know where she's at. Hope it's just tied up with work. I know she was planning a move to working for herself. If that's the case, you know what that's like. I did it a couple of time in FL and it was all consuming.

I count being physically in the state at any point (flying over doesn't count).

I'm missing Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas, Wyoming, Alaska, Washington and Hawaii. Didn't realize I have visited or passed through so many. When I was between 3rd and 4th grade, my family took a tour around the country on Amtrak, travelling around the perimeter of the country more or less. We visited relatives in California (cutting down from Montana so we could visit Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon) and friends in Louisiana. Had my first crawfish boil ever there. Wasn't my last :D

I remember a couple of road trips like that, compressed into about 12 days. Black Hills, Wall Drug , Custer State Park, Mt Rushmore, Yellowstone, and the Tetons, then south to a meteor crater, an Anasazi village, and the Grand Canyon. You don't really get to see everything, just a glimpse as you drive by. First time to Rushmore we arrived in the afternoon and could not see a single thing. Returned the next morning when the cloud moved out of the way, and the 4 presidents were right there, big and close. Hard to believe the cloud hid the entire mountain like it did.

by the way, FC, your signature line says 1077 miles down - been saying that for a while now. when are you going to get on the trail and make some progress?

How in the world did you miss LA and KY?:)

It has to do with the routes I take and my destinations.

I was amazed too one day when I looked at how many times I drove by KY.

I just found a wire-frame graphic of the US and filled the states with a paint program. I chose the colors.

BirdBrain
07-03-2013, 12:13
me too, i wanna do the map. only states i've not visited are Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, for sure, and maybe North Dakota and Wisconsin. airport visits count, yes they do!

See above post. You could just edit my map.

once you're north of gorham, your bailout options are limited, the only access road in the mahoosucs until grafton notchess is success pond rd, which is a gravel lumber road, not really a public road, so you cant count on a hitch until grafton notch.

Good to know. We're prepared for whatever nature throws at us, mostly with what's between our two ears ;) Then the gear and food. As for the feedback thusly received that's great. I was just wondering if there was more to it than that or if that was truly all there was. I've gotten much more in the past on other sections and the least of any on this one. Go figure :P Perhaps there just isn't that much more to it. I think we're going to have an awesome time! We train before the hikes so we're not going out green. HB, how far are you from the Palisades Parkway at the AT?

Crossing the palisades parkway is still the scariest thing that I've ever had to do on the A.T.. I don't recommend hiking that section at 5pm on a Friday.

If you had to use this success pond rd as a bailout, how far is it to reasonable civilization? Basically, where your chances for a ride are fairly good.

Berlin, NH. It runs sort of Parallel to the trail. You could get lucky with a ride from a hiker at one of the trailheads. Distance will vary depending on which one. It is a good year round road.
