I give it a magazine and tell it to sit out in the full sun in a lawn chair. Remind it to flip over every now and then, but don't tell the chicken it is getting too much sun. Gets nice and crispy that way!

Nothing special, or "top secret." I mean, there are only so many ways to fry chicken... My recipe has flour, paprika, salt, Mrs. Dash Garlic & Herb, cayenne pepper, and a few other things (trying to remember off the top of my head). The secret is to get it crispy, not soggy.

She is new and means well. Good intentions are more important than perfect compliance in my book. I am the voice of experience. I do many stupid things. God as my witness, I do not mean to offend anyone. I hope that people will extend me some grace when I act ignorantly. If I have this hope for myself, I must have that same hope for others who act as I do at times. Just because I think someone is acting dense, it does not give me license to turn my perfect nose in the air. That is just me. I have no one on ignore. I am not putting words in peoples mouths or pretending I understand any other view. I am being patient. I bet she slows down after reading the last few comments. Hopefully, she doesn't just disappear.

I agree with what you are saying... But I don't think noses are exactly being turned in the air. :) I think it is more of a case that subtle hints have been dropped, the behavior continued, so the hints became less subtle. I hope she decides to stick with us because she has made some fun contributions to the Cafe and WB. However, I personally was not going to keep sifting through pages and pages of Cafe postings every morning. At a certain point, it just stops being fun. :(

On a side note: If you try to pick your friends nose, you may be left with just the option of picking your nose because said person might now be your enemy.

As many of us are getting ready to get back out on the trail, I thought these tips might come in handy. :D

Some Camping Tips

When using a public campground, a tuba placed on your picnic table will keep the campsites on either side vacant.
Get even with a bear who raided your food bag by kicking his favorite stump apart and eating all the ants.
Old socks can be made into high fiber beef jerky by smoking them over an open fire.
When smoking a fish, never inhale.
A hot rock placed in your sleeping bag will keep your feet warm. A hot enchilada works almost as well, but the cheese sticks between your toes.
The best backpacks are named for national parks or mountain ranges. Steer clear of those named for landfills.
Acupuncture was invented by a camper who found a porcupine in his sleeping bag.
While the Swiss Army Knife has been popular for years, the Swiss Navy Knife has remained largely unheard of. Its single blade functions as a tiny canoe paddle.
Effective January 1, 1997, you will actually have to enlist in the Swiss Army to get a Swiss Army Knife.
Lint from your navel makes a handy fire starter. Warning: Remove lint from navel before applying the match.
You’ll never be lost if you remember that moss always grows on the north side of your compass.
You can duplicate the warmth of a down-filled bedroll by climbing into a plastic garbage bag with several geese.
When camping, always wear a long-sleeved shirt. It gives you something to wipe your nose on.
You can compress the diameter of your rolled up sleeping bag by running over it with your car.
Take this simple test to see if you qualify for solo camping. Shine a flashlight into one ear. If the beam shines out the other ear, do not go into the woods alone.
A two-man pup tent does not include two men or a pup.
A potato baked in the coals for one hour makes an excellent side dish. A potato baked in the coals for three hours makes an excellent hockey puck.
You can start a fire without matches by eating Mexican food, then breathing on a pile of dry sticks.
In emergency situations, you can survive in the wilderness by shooting small game with a slingshot made from the elastic waistband of your underwear.
The guitar of the noisy teenager at the next campsite makes excellent kindling.
Check the washing instructions before purchasing any apparel to be worn camping. Buy only those that read “Beat on a rock in stream.”
The sight of a bald eagle has thrilled campers for generations. The sight of a bald man, however, does absolutely nothing for the eagle.
It’s entirely possible to spend your whole vacation on a winding mountain road behind a large motor home.
Bear bells provide an element of safety for hikers in grizzly country. The tricky part is getting them on the bears.
A great deal of hostility can be released by using newspaper photos of politicians for toilet paper.
In an emergency, a drawstring from a parka hood can be used to strangle a snoring tent mate.

While the Swiss Army Knife has been popular for years, the Swiss Navy Knife has remained largely unheard of. Its single blade functions as a tiny canoe paddle.

The sight of a bald eagle has thrilled campers for generations. The sight of a bald man, however, does absolutely nothing for the eagle.

Memo for future thru hikers:
Bounce no boxes!
Pains in the a##.

I had food boxes mailed to me on my thru and you are correct, totally not necessary and I don't do that anymore.

However, since I will not have any home support next year I intent to bounce a box to myself with meds and maps that I plan right now to reach every 3 weeks or so. Really don't see an easier way to do this. And since I am already using a bounce box - I wouldn't do this otherwise - I'll include things in it you only need a few of at a time like q-tips, ziplocks, etc.

OzJacko
07-05-2013, 12:49
One bounce box every few weeks sounds easy but be careful.
They tend to "grow" and I guarantee at least a couple will be where you don't want them.
Post office hours are a pain but at least you can get a new box and immediately remail it.
Other locations may hold a box but can't take it back off you.

At this point, I think it is still no harm, no foul. The gang at the Cafe doesn't tend to hold things against people and life goes on. :)

Since I have been MIA, and have only the tiniest glimpse of what this may be referring to, I abstain from any comments. BUT--

Anyone care to give me a cliff's notes version of the last couple of weeks? I was out doing a short stint on the AT (no internet ), and then at the beach with the grands, so I really didn't care about internet, (except that I still have grad school stuff to do). Happy late 4th all!

Safe travels, Owl. I'm waking up at as-scrack time to drive north and join Coach for the Moosilauke north-south traverse. Psyched for it. :) This will not add to my peak-bagging list, since M was my first 14 months ago, but I've wanted to do this hike for a long time. Also, it will add 7-8 A.T. miles and break me into the 70's, which is a bonus. Hoping the forecast for good views Sunday AM comes true, as that is the planned summit time. I may, depending on weather and other considerations, stay over up there another day Monday to bag a couple new 4Ks. We'll see.

My daughter had an scrap once that turned into an infection almost over night and it landed her in the hospital. The doctor said it would get worse before it got better due to the antibiotics that kill off the infection but by doing so the infection gives off toxins when they die, and cause the body to not feel to good...thus "worse before it gets better"

Day107 Fort Montgomery NY (http://sassafrasandkabooseatadventure.blogspot.com/2013/07/day107-fort-montgomery-ny.html)

Sassafras has had an infection in her great toe for over two weeks. We have been treating it the best we can with imput from her doctor at home. It has not improved. She tried to hike out today and was lethargic and got sick to her stomach. After talking with my wife we have decided to go home. Sassafras says she does not feel well is tearful and is ready to go home. It hurts me so bad to see her like this. We will fly home tomorrow and evaluate our options after she sees her doctor. Kaboose

please send a pm to mainebob

Sassafras, we love you!!

That's too bad. PM sent.

When I began to see feedback from my excessive posting run, I knew I would need a little time to reflect.
I had a lot going on Fri/Sat, so I logged off. This is my first opportunity to catch up without interruption.

Prior to June 26, merely two weeks ago, I had few posts, no WB friends, and little interaction. Then I started the Life After thread, which got way more traffic than I anticipated, and was ... mostly ... loads of fun. It resulted in several new friendships and invitations to the Cafe, where I landed in the middle of the K-hunting game. Being goal-driven and prone to game addictive behavior, this was a bad mix. I should have kept my distance from the game. I did not, and I regret it. I've done stupider things, but thankfully not in public.

In penance, I have banned myself from posting in the Cafe prior to July 17. In addition, I have deleted my avatar and retreated to Lurkerville, my hometown, to further reduce my presence. Meanwhile, I will lurk in the Cafe, and may post elsewhere. Thank you for your patience and forbearance.

I have enjoyed the camaraderie of the Cafe, the banter, and even the nonsense. If I ever meet any of you in person, I'll be the one with the bag over my head bumping into things.

Reasons
1) They are all dead except for 2 people
2) Forgot to pay the cable bill
3) Moved on to WB or BPL to keep from killing themselves out of pure boredom
4) They ran out of cheese and wen't to Whole Foods and now are squatting uncontrollably in the parking lot

Ain't no way I'm gonna read the last half million pages! I peeked randomly around, here's my Cliff Notes version for the last 2-3 weeks, correct me if I'm wrong:
1. Oz enjoyed Pubsylvania :)
2. Astro is out hiking
3. HB is back to flogging the ignorant masses into running up their post counts. I thought the Great Insurrection and Cafe Strike of 2012 put an end to that!

They are very trusting over at Trailplace. The owner of the site hasn't logged in for 4 months. Contrast that to WB which has police on patrol 24/7.Only cause we need it

its hiking related.im a part time squanderer. i squander my life between real life internet and dreamland

I like how the voice recognition doesn't add punctuation. "real life internet" just sounds wrong. unfortunately I think there's some truth in it

What!!!

I take a little break from WB, come back, and the cafe is in shambles. All my lovely furnishings - gone! Mouse poop in the tater machine. Toxic cheese! Tell Rocketsocks that I threw out the listeria limburger he left in here. Also his discarded socks as well, it was hard to tell which was smelling worse :p

4. Most disturbing! Someone said something stupid in the cafe?!? Say it ain't so!! This cafe ain't big enough for two of us!Hey Lady! hope all is goin well with you...No problems here  though I did have to send out the "Baby come back" song...yep...she was worth it!

Do Alligators eat doughnuts?

I spent the better part of an hour feeding a 12' alligator Cheetos at the Battleship North Carolina.
