Kent CT isn't that thru-hiker-esque but the Fife 'n Drum piano bar is pretty old-school and fun. When I thru-hiked, I don't think I stopped in Kent - I don't really remember if I did but I section hiked CT (in the snow) in '11 and had a great little stop at the Fife 'n Drum. I'd recommend it even.

Ridgefielder spots ‘kangaroo’ on Route 116
Published on July 8th, 2013
Written by: The Ridgefield Press

A Ridgefielder spotted — and videoed — a kangaroo or wallaby on Route 116 this morning.

Rich Lechner was on his way to work around 5:30 a.m.on Route 116 just past June Road in North Salem — about two miles west of the Ridgefield line.

“I see many types of wildlife on my early morning commute (deer, raccoons, etc.), but never expected to see a kangaroo!” he said.

“It was standing directly in the middle of the road.”

Mr. Lechner stopped and grabbed this video with his iPhone.

He added, “Sorry for the poor quality (and especially the dreadful background music that was on the radio at the time), but you can clearly see it hopping away in the video.”

The wallaby, smaller than a kangaroo, has been known to exist as an escape in Westchester County, where several people have kept them as pets. They are noctural animals.

FC , Just as you cross Rt 4 the Inn at the Long Trail offers free camping across from it. 2252222523Although it is noisy with trucks climbing & descending the hill.A little bit further if you stay at Gifford Woods SP they have free sites for thrus which you kinda are or regular site rentals not to bad. Shower house is nice W/coin fed showers. Plus it's a shorter walk from there to the Killington PO if you are doing a mail drop. Convenience store right next to it has a great deli & adult beverage store in it. Only about 1/2 mile away & more of a small market than convenience store. If you need to get into Rutland you can catch the bus from there too.

We'll have our trusty Alaskan Husky with red saddlebags with us.

Naturally, the camera did not do this 1/2 hour any justice:)

Still a fantastic picture, Coach. If you want, there might still be more detail you can pull out of the photo in any of the usual computer photo programs. Much more you could do in Photoshop but I've rescued a mediocre iPhone photo or two by tweaking them a bit.

Believe it or not, Lou, from my first photo to my last was closer to an hour. My phone cam washed out the light contrasts more than your camera did, but the pics are still pretty. Here are a few more:

The first I took, under low light, from 4:33 am:
22527

From a bit later:

22528

I like the way this one shows Mt. Washington's shape even though it's fogged in:

22529

The last sunrise shot I took was at 5:19 am - posted it earlier.

Another waterfall shot:

22530

Almost to the summit, just before 9 am. My phone cam gave out right after I took a few shots from this spot, went from 7% battery to closing, alas. The summit views were local only. Lou said got a bit better views - he started over an hour after me and caught up with me at the hostel - beat me there by taking the roadwalk, in fact, when I took the AT after first sending him the message I was gonna take the road option.

22531

Sure - are you on a Mac or PC?

General suggestions: simple programs like iPhoto on the Mac or whatever the windows photo program is (can't remember the name) will let you tweak the exposure in certain areas. Let's say you have a beautifully exposed sky but your land is much darker than you wanted. Assuming your camera caught the data you want to pull out, you can "heighten" shadows and pull some light out of the darker area. You can similar tone down a few overblown spots (typically solid white) by reducing "highlights." Same goes for contrast, exposure and saturation. The best way to start is just to play with them and see when it looks like what you remember. If you want a more simple approach, many of these programs, including iPhoto, have a "quick fix" or "enhance" option that does a best guess for you.

I'm in PC. It's clear to me I need to step up my photo-editing game. I do a decent job of seeing good shots and framing and composing them well, need to learn more about editing.

Unfortunately, I won't be in front of a PC until Monday or I could give you some specific instructions there. It does basically the same thing as iPhoto though not quite as well.

Mine are straight off my FB gallery, so the web cut-and-paste theory doesn't hold for all cases. Gonna try it now with some Panoramio files of pics I recently took on Eisenhower:

Southwesterly from southern part of Ike Loop:
22535

Central Presidential Panorama from the summit:
22536

South from Summit Past Montalban Ridge to Chocorua and Passaconaway, among others:

22537

Northeastward from Loop trail atop northeastern cliffs, Jefferson to Montalban Ridge:
22538

And a last shot from lower on the Loop, showing lots of hikers, clothed, out on the summer solstice:

I always laugh at the restaurant Popeye's Chicken. Popeye is the slang name of a poultry disease. You can guess why it's called that.

chinese restaurant??

It's some infectious disease where a Turkey or Chickens eye pops out and flops around. Popeyes is a Fried chicken place.

Saturday I let myself get dehydrated, in the afternoon I realized it and started to drink up, but it felt empty. When I met Driver later at the road, he thru me a gatorade, orange, the only flavor I can stomach. It hit the spot....BIG. Next afternoon on my way down, all I could thing of was......2 orange gatorades and I'm good, just 2, I'm good. So, I think I'm going to start bringing some of that stuff on warm hikes!

At Vango Abby and plan on being at Kinacora tomorrow. Actually has not rained yet today and if it does not tonight it will the first day with no rain of my 12. Trail still really wet and muddy, which is slowing me down. Got tired of carrying a wet tent and have spent more nights in hostels and shelters than all my other trips combined. Looking forward to the sunshine (sort of like waiting for Godat).

Man- I've started to just skip the other threads and come to the Cafe - - I'm getting a little tired of doling out the same advice over and over again ...."yes, you need a rain jacket" "no, a big bowie knife is not required" "no, don't carry a military shovel or your laptop or a cotton blanket with horses screen printed on it" - - - I'm even getting tired of the sport of "outing Trolls" - - how are you all doing?

I started drinking it after I had a very bad experience one day while hiking. It has really helped me. I wouldn't hike in the summer without it now.

Absolutely - - I'd suggest packing a bunch of raw bacon in it. Don't worry about hanging it or anything - those things are strong - just leave it right in front of the shelter

yeah - I'm always on the lookout - - it's funny but I was freezing my rear off a couple of winters ago at Silers Bald Shelter - - someone abandoned one of these blankets with the bears or horses or whatever on it - - I sure did use the thing - I shouldn't be such a hardass
