just came back from a walk on the beach. it's a beautiful night in the ocean is calm. I'm moving next week to island park, just north of long beach and it will be the first time in 30 years then I'll be living more than a few 100 yards from the beach. I'll miss being able to walk down in the morning with my coffee.
everything changes. nothing is permanent.
the only thing thats permanent is change.

Sleeping Giant was one of my favorite places to hike for almost 20 years. They did an amazing job of putting in so many miles of trail on such a relatively small property while still making it feel like you re hiking in a remote area. It's easy to get turned around there at some of the points where multiple trails meet, on occasion I've gotten to junctions with three or more possible ways to go and had to break out the compass to figure which turn to take.

I'm still at a loss as to how someone that is uninjured would feel the need to call SAR from sleeping giant (though I'm not judging since I wasn't there at the time). I camped there with scouts for close to ten years (in the one legal group camping site) several kids got "lost" over the years, but they knew that if you lose your way at sleeping giant, just walk down hill and you'll hit a road.

Driver8 it was great that you got to help them out. Also, the write up you posted was very well done, I still have most of the trail map memorized and it was fun being able to mentally follow your story around the park.

They weren't Q or Hamden kids, Lou. Two from New Bri-in, and one from Bristol. They had gone up the head and past the chin on the blue trail, and somehow got onto the Violet and were headed away from the park HQs. It would've taken SAR quite I while to find them, I think, as it sounded like they didn't know the trail system that well when I talked to them on the phone. They thanked me several times when I got to my car - I saved them a lot of hassle and potential injury. Everybody won there, b/c it was good for me that I had the three companions for that half mile stretch which was much harder than almost the all the entirety of that trail.

If I had been smart, in fact, I would've had us turn back to the park HQs by the easy stretch I'd just done, up Red Diamond or Red Hex to the Tower Path for an easy walk down - SAR would've been happy to drive me to my car from there. I had no idea how hard that next half mile was. Live and learn. ...

Thanks a lot for the compliment, Elf. The key to understand why they called SAR was that this was only their second or third time hiking. They were clueless. Had a map but got disoriented, very easy as you, Lou and I and other veterans of the Giant can see right away.

It was an enjoyable night out, made better yet for the feeling of accomplishment at having help those guys get home safely. Nice feeling, indeed.

The remarkable thing is that the terrain is so varied and pretty that every trail is a beaut, has something nice to see. I really liked the Red Square trail, and the new parts of Yellow were very pretty and themselves harder than I expected. The mountain laurels are the star of that show in my book, among the flora. The boulder and scree fields and traprock cliffs are very fine, too.

I lack parts of the Green Trail, the Blue east of Chestnut Lane, a bit of the Yellow and pieces of some of the Reds, plus some of the connector trails - some Yellow/Green, etc. Does the Horse trail count? I'll probably hike it along the way, too, just to say I did. Have yet to see a horse or even horse droppings out there.

Oh wow went searching for something else and found this gem.......

City folk tend to look back to bygone days when the streets of the larger Scottish cities rang to the cries of ‘oyster wives’ and vendors of everything from hot peas to Het Pints, a brew of ale, eggs and whisky flavoured with nutmeg and sold from a steaming copper kettle. Those were the times when a fish dinner, including ale and perhaps a dozen oysters, cost little more than one cigarette does now. As far back as the thirteenth century, salmon was so plentiful that it was pickled for export to London to be fed to the poor, and only a hundred years ago servants in big houses had contracts stipulating that it was to be served to them no more than three times a week.

The posts # will get there... hmmm 9388 for me.

Actually I was looking for Scottish sides for the haggis other than potato! I was raised by a Scottish/English mother and she attended culinary school in France after WW2 and well we ate really good. I was cooking by age 9 for my other brother, during the week that my youngest brother was being born and she had to stay at the hospital. I think that was 1970. I was looking up something yummy and similar to Scones with Cranberry.... & lard.

And then I said, "And Man, you should've seen the snakes!" To which one of the guys said he had stepped over a snake just earlier in the day, for real. I had to ask.

"What color was the snake?"

"It was darker brown and lighter brown, back and forth."

"That was a copperhead, my friend. They're poisonous and very dangerous."

"Really?"

"Yes. Darker brown and lighter brown, alternating?"

"Yeah, that's it. I was scared of it and stepped around it carefully."

"Good thing, because they will bite and are poisonous. There are a lot of them in this park. I'm glad you saw it - they're easy to miss."

"Wow."

I'm pretty sure it was a copperhead. In addition to the above, I also asked him if it had a shovel-shaped head, and he said yes. Scary. I've been fortunate never to meet a copperhead or a rattler out on trail, that I know of at least, in a good 800 miles of hiking. Reckon I'm grabbing some gaiters as soon as I can, though. the milk snake looks very similar and is way more common in new england than a copperhead. i once nearly stepped on one in MA and nearly gave myself a heart attack then i did some research, overwhelmingly likely to have not been a copperhead. the part about the head is indicative of a pit viper but it would seem you asked a rather leading question.

as far as the gaiters protecting you from a snakebite... good luck.

True, it was a leading question, such as it was, but I pushed back and asked if the head was as narrow as the body or significantly wider. He seemed pretty clear it was indeed a shovel. In any event, those guys had quite the stimulating outing.

As for gaiters, I'll take what protection they afford over that provided by socks and shorts. Even better, gaiters plus long, tough pants. Copperheads, rarely encountered though they be, freak me out a bit.

I think you need to rationale the time you use your gear against the cost.
For example, a sometime section hiker who occasionally does some 2 or 3 day hikes a few times a year at most thecost of quality gear is a bit much.
But for a thru hike of the AT where you are using stuff for 5 months, quality gear is worth every penny. A $1000 worth of gear for 10 nights a year at most is expensive.
A $1000 for 150 nights is less than $6.67 a night. Cheap.

i always enjoy the threads about slackpacking, record hikes, speed hiking etc., and marvel at the world of individuals that think there are some sort of rules to thruhiking, or even backpacking.
i just wanted to relate a few stories from my maine hike last month.
i met people who slackpakced. i met people who flipflopped. i met section hikers, i met shelter stu, whose been on the trail now for over a year, could care less about travelling light or making miles. i met fidjit and dot.com, an older couple from TX who had flipflopped, but dot.com found maine exteremely difficult, and they decided to just section the parts of the trail they felt they could do without too much trouble.you can read about their adventures on trailjournals, and youll see how happy theyve been in their decision.
i will still say , in the end, its the journey, not the destination, and the people they met along the way.
when you set a goal, sometimes you'll feel as if youve failed if you dont reach that goal. but if you do attain that goal, or any goal, satisfaction is temporary, as reality sets in you need a new goal, and it never ends.
i set a goal many years ago to hike every inch of the AT, but over the years ,my priorities have changed and its no longer importasnt to me to either thru hike the at or to section every inch.
i feel if i had been that focussed on that one goal, i never would have hiked other areas, never seen some of the more remote areas of the whites, vermont , the daks, never would have rockclimbed , maybe never wouuld have married and had kids, by far my biggest treasure at all.
on WB there are frequent attacks on those who dont accept their purist ethic, and those who just dont have any sense of humor at all, as if any of this had any real importance.
as lone wolf has said, its just walking, and everyone gets out of their hike something just a little bit different than anyone else.no two people hike the same hike, even if they cover the same miles day after day, everyones journey is unique, and colored by the past that brought them to hike the trail in the first place.
in the end, it is indeed the journey, not the destination, and in the end.....
its all good.

by any chance, do you know raving rodney?he was on his 4th thru when i met him in maine last month, old green kelty external, same pack he used for all his hikes, great guy.

i always enjoy the threads about slackpacking, record hikes, speed hiking etc., and marvel at the world of individuals that think there are some sort of rules to thruhiking, or even backpacking.
i just wanted to relate a few stories from my maine hike last month.
i met people who slackpakced. i met people who flipflopped. i met section hikers, i met shelter stu, whose been on the trail now for over a year, could care less about travelling light or making miles. i met fidjit and dot.com, an older couple from TX who had flipflopped, but dot.com found maine exteremely difficult, and they decided to just section the parts of the trail they felt they could do without too much trouble.you can read about their adventures on trailjournals, and youll see how happy theyve been in their decision.
i will still say , in the end, its the journey, not the destination, and the people they met along the way.
when you set a goal, sometimes you'll feel as if youve failed if you dont reach that goal. but if you do attain that goal, or any goal, satisfaction is temporary, as reality sets in you need a new goal, and it never ends.
i set a goal many years ago to hike every inch of the AT, but over the years ,my priorities have changed and its no longer importasnt to me to either thru hike the at or to section every inch.
i feel if i had been that focussed on that one goal, i never would have hiked other areas, never seen some of the more remote areas of the whites, vermont , the daks, never would have rockclimbed , maybe never wouuld have married and had kids, by far my biggest treasure at all.
on WB there are frequent attacks on those who dont accept their purist ethic, and those who just dont have any sense of humor at all, as if any of this had any real importance.
as lone wolf has said, its just walking, and everyone gets out of their hike something just a little bit different than anyone else.no two people hike the same hike, even if they cover the same miles day after day, everyones journey is unique, and colored by the past that brought them to hike the trail in the first place.
in the end, it is indeed the journey, not the destination, and in the end.....
its all good.

Very well said.

I agree. I feel the same way. Age and wisdom = don't give a flying fig about anyone's journey/destination as much as I care about my own.

Well said. It is cool in late summer and early fall to see at TJ the happy faces of those who have completed thru-hikes, but that happy smile can be seen on many a person who has made it to the top of many a hill or mountain, or who has learned or done something they value for the first time.

there is great pride and satisfaction in attaining a goal pursued with passion, and my intent is not to diminish this achievement whatsoever.
i also used to cringe a bit when there was a manmade intursion into my "natural "experience. but now, when i hear kids in the woods, it makes me smile. in the gunks, the long path has a section that scrambles up a 3o ft cliff. its nothing dangerous, just a bit dicey, but the trails in the gunks commonly intersect with carriageroads, and as i scrambled over the edge of the cliff, i was met by 3 ladies in their 6os that had simply walked up the carriage road, and again, i smiled. they were enjoying the same awesome view i was, and didnt have to put in the effort to see the same thing i did. i felt good about the workout i had just had,but was i in any way superior to these ladies? i could imagine myself, a few years further along taking that same carriage road as the easier way to the viewpoint, and all the memories of my scrambles will come back, to give me the same satisfaction. ive learned never to judge, lest i be judged(and lord knows ive been judged here)to become more tolerant of other opinions, to try to be helpful when i can here on wb, and the rest of the time, have fun here at the cafe.

One of many grace notes to the red letter day in which I first made it to the top of Mt. Washington was that I got to take the picture of three lovely women in their 60s - about the age my mom would be now - who had come up via the Huntington Ravine Trail. They were taking the shuttle down and, though pleased with their accomplishment, muttering "Never again!" I considered it, in a sense, a kind nudge from my mom to aim even higher and harder and an opportunity to wonder at how many people of how much varied experience there are in the world.

Am enjoying Jen Pharr Davis's book right now, having picked it up yesterday. Lots of nice nuggets in there, among them the process of releasing of needless attachments and insecurities that can come with hiking. Jen's emphasis is on long distance hiking, but I see it as applicable to all hiking, which is so restorative and fulfilling in my experience.

When i was laid up in greenville,i was walking from my motel into town what I see this guy walking out of the woods with an old pack and wooden walking stick. he waved to me as if he"knew" , bummed a cigarette from me. sat around and started talking. I ended up seeing him around town the next 2 days. he was hoping to hook up with his son to hike the trail together. really really good guy.

We have a guy that is almost living on the Bibbulmun the last few years. Has hiked it about 15 times in that time, once 5 times in a row flipflopping.
Goes by trail name Pack Animal which he adopted for humour value as "pack animals are banned on the track".
He's a very interesting character.

By the way ++1 for HB's post - won't copy it and use up more pages.
I've been asked a few times what preparation I've been doing for the AT next year.
Basically I think I've been putting in 55 or so years of training on the walking bit. Just sorting the fine detail on the gear.

People with the right attitude seem to succeed at thruhikes.
The right attitude is the one that works for them.
If that includes slackpacking, it still works.
If it doesn't include slackpacking it still works.

I have a confession to make re 2013 hike.
My son and I have discussed the possibility of one of us being laid up with illness or injury.
It's one of the reasons we're carrying two tents, two stoves etc.
Because we will not be able to go beyond 6 months (effectively 5 1/2 months) due to visa restrictions, we have agreed that any lengthy delay, the other will continue and the delayed one will rejoin further down the track. We won't "fake it" to the ATC. The goal is we both thruhike all the way, but we will count it on a personal level as a success if at least one of us has put a foot on every part of the trail. Not necessarily the same one all the way.
If one of us does miss a section, we will probably come back one day in the future and plug the gap to genuinely qualify as a thruhiker.

id still look for another place to hike right now until this is resolved.

Actually had a reprieve from working Sunday so I am at start of 3 day weekend.
That's the good news.
Bad news is the list of things that my wife is highlighting as needing to be done by the time I leave for US in March.
Still expect to do a day hike on the Sunday (with my wife) into a hut on trail to reflect on my hike last year.

My children identified me as officially an "old phart" when I turned 40.
The last 12 months I've probably felt better than I have at any time since then.
Funny how a glitch in your view of your mortality gives you new zest for life.

We don't want them to talk to Pepe. By the way I was thinking of joining Oz and his son, can any of you guys suggest any methods of funding, I've already been to Parris Island and they don't want me back , so they won't help. I've got rent, my wife's car payment, some credit cards to catch up on. Verizon, CL+P... I've grown acustom to eating regular.... you know, I just noticed on another thread that WB helps fund Thru Hikes:D

Actually on a slightly more serious note, I've been driving a boring country run 5 days a week, and I find that having a full bladder is a great way not to fall asleep behind the wheel.
Isn't it strange that we can stay awake easier from the fear of wetting ourselves than the fear of ploughing into a tree at 65mph?!

When driving that boring road the full bladder is deliberate.
When hiking I empty frequently, hiking seems to have that effect on me.
If it gets too yellow I drink more, completely clear and I'm drinking too much.
I let the outgoing dictate how much I should put in.;)

Those are the missionaries. Nice guys. If you need help with anything, just ask them. Feed them once in a while and they'll really appreciate it. Ask them anything about religion and they'll have an answer or will get back to you with an answer.
