Just remember: Putting the vehicle on cruise control does not mean you can step to the back of the vehicle to make coffee. It will not work out well for you!

Hey, does going through a drive-through count as an assisted hike if you are yellow-blazing?

Can I let the 12 year old drive when I'm making coffee?

In the event of a water landing, your kangaroo will act as a floatation device! This should be added to the usual airline safety talk.

For those following our progress the scenario is currently that we will be doing Vermont in a rush.
IM will attempt to not miss anything but I am pushing for about 20 mile average days and will not necessarily walk all 20.
We aim to be in Hanover around Sat/Sun week and then do the Whites etc in a more "acceptable" way.
If necessary I will "speed" hike the first part of Maine after that. Aiming to summit first few days of September.
Hoping the above agenda will fit in with Train Wreck and Coach Lou plans to meet up with us.

Probably not ATM.
Still some variables to be decided at Anne's end (she's just gone to bed and is offline by the way).
Looks less than 50/50 she will come over after all.
Was looking at travelling with another and that is no longer possible.
If she comes over - will 90% likely jump into Canada, but if not will go back the 14th as planned.
In that case a return trip in 2014 or 2015 a definite but not to hike - just visit.

They have the hot air balloon festival in Albuquerque every year. The last time I thought about going hot air ballooning, was the year many of the balloons were pushed into the power lines because of the winds. That was a little off-putting, so I decided to wait on that one!

Maybe in an area that has a few less obstacles.

We have a Hot air balloon rally here every year. 2 years ago, 2 balloons landed in my back yard. It was my birthday, so that was a cool present. I've been up twice. REALLY AWESOME!

We have a Hot air balloon rally here every year. 2 years ago, 2 balloons landed in my back yard. It was my birthday, so that was a cool present. I've been up twice. REALLY AWESOME!

Yes it is. Here is a picture from my ride in Florida. Not the best picture. I had to scan the picture to get it on my computer. My scanner sucks.

Been lurking with the SAP lately but am sitting in McD's in North Adams with my PC today.
Have the gang of four been suitably chastised and caned for speaking politics or do they need to sit in the corners with the cone hats on some more?

In response to earlier query, ATM was on the money.
The others are hiking MA2 to VT9 today while I am allowing them to "proxy blaze":D it for me while catching up on journal, banking and conversation with my spouse today.
Army and his daughter will tent/shelter part of the way and IM, Rolling R and I are returning to Army's brothers house tonight and returning to VT9 tomorrow and hiking north.
Today is the end of our slackpacking week.

Dangnab it, and other sounds of disappointment...

I had hoped that around this time of year, I'd SOBO a section of southern New England so that I'd get to meet you guys along the trail at some point. (Or simply start ahead of you and NOBO - you'd be bound to overtake and pass me.) But it is not to be.

But I have a buddy in Perth who really wants to get me out there at some point (and another in Sydney who has a standing offer to take me on a real adventure in the Budawangs). So perhaps some year after retirement, I'll see you Down Under.

Worth the trip, Kevin. I enjoyed a nice afternoon with Jacko, IM and the gang week and a half ago. On the near-level trail just south of the CT/NY border, with 90+ F and 90-ish humidity (or so it seemed), I got sopping wet and drank a gallon of fluids in a mere 4 miles. What ordinarily would take me an hour and a half, tops, took me the better part of 3.

But I digress - Jacko and IM and the gang are very pleasant company, Keven. I wish you and your wife all the best - glad to hear she's improving and so

Was gonna say I'm happy you've been able to be there for her, Kevin. Hard stuff - most of us have been through it or something like it at one time or another - but it's important to remember what a blessing it is for those who are ailing to have ones dear to them nearby.

Well, I'm not Cherokee, but I could have been! A few years ago one of my brothers was granted membership in the Western Arkansas or whatever Cherokee Tribe - a group that does not have official status with the BIA. All he had to do was submit some paperwork and send a check, and in return he got a card that he can use to get "top-quality" healthcare at a NA reservation, and "someday" if the federal gov't decides to recognize the group officially, he might even get some money in compensation for the oppression his people have suffered. There are six of us. He persuaded four to send papers and money, but not me. I didn't feel oppressed, and I figured it was a scam. Too bad I don't get to benefit from that healthcare. I'm SO underprivileged.

Exactly! Aren't candles supposed to go in pie? I grew up thinking people must always have candles in pie... :D

On my '95 hike, I was in Hot Springs at my birthday. We were hanging out at Wingfoot's house and the gang I was hiking with got one of those single serving pecan pies and stuck a candle in it.

Strange how some things are worth remembering.

HooRoo should have been offered a blindfold, rather than ear protection, when everyone had him in their sights.
HooRoo definitely needed the "liquid courage." In fact, that is probably how you convinced him to pose for the above mentioned photo.
One should never get a kangaroo drunk (or, pissed) and then hand him a firearm. That just seems like a recipe for disaster!
And, I warned you - Once you give a kangaroo beer, they will never want to share! ;)

Lurkerville is in east TN. It's currently a VERY WELCOME 65 degrees, with a high expected near 86, and no rain for a change! If the forecast holds true, I might even get to mow the thigh-high grass this evening. Did a little mowing yesterday, but just the knee-high stuff close to the house. Then I had to dig potatoes and fix supper.
So are you headed out on a hike today? Sounds like fun! We don't expect to get out again until September when we take a weekend trip into Virginia and hike McAfee's Knob. Looking forward to it!

They were in North Adams Mass, last nite. They were trying to lighten the load before the Greens and the Whites. They plan to zero in Manchester in 2 days and then resume. AA, may take a medical, after a DR. appointment. He has an issue. On Thursday I will call Oz for a local, and meet him in Vt on Friday to spend the weekend.....I'm hoping they are past Killington.....I haven't walked from Gifford Woods to Hanover yet!

Garden is 40' x 110'. Full of weeds most years, but I'm learning better techniques as the years go by. I love planning the garden in the early months of the year, and I enjoy planting season. But when it gets hot, it's easy to find something else to do. Or when we get loads of rain (like this year) and days go by where everything is growing like ...well, like weeds, and it's too muddy to get out there, it gets out of control quickly!

For supper last night we had a plateful of nothing but produce from our garden: scalloped potatoes, green beans, fried okra, ripe tomato, and tender sweet corn. It was luscious! I'm making myself hungry!!!

Other stuff we're growing includes sweet potatoes, peanuts, peppers, melons, summer and winter squash, a truckload of purple zinnias, an assortment of onions, garlic, and scallions, sugar snap peas (but they're already gone), and 4 or 5 varieties of beans I mean to harvest at maturity (meaning as dry beans). Dry beans are cheap, but I just wanna see if I can learn how to grow, harvest, and store them. Stinkbugs are messing up my tomatoes, and squash bugs ruined much of the summer squash. Other than that, it's been a good year so far. With a little more:sun it can only get better!

i know 2 or 3 people (non-hikers) who've had knee replacements, and still hobble around afterwards. maybe they had multiple problems - knees, hips, back, etc - and just fixed the worst thing. i hope your experience is MUCH better!

My dad, 77, had one of his knees done 2 years ago. Crazy very active guy, he was retired from the family trade, he tended bar...still chased women!!!! Anyhow, when he was 14 he broke his ankle, and had vintage technology holding it together. Well the new knee changed the way that ankle sat and now he has all sorts of problems. He is the ONLY person I know that ever had a problem!

Right now my personal knowledge of people I know that have had them done is 1 and 1. One is hobbling which is probably a bad choice of wording, but he is limited on how he can squat down. The other is a woman, a member on here, hammock hanger, who had both done and is hiking like crazy. I'm set on goin' for it. I've heard more good than bad. Thanks for the well wish.

Like I was saying to ILB, I've heard more good stories than bad and I'm just gonna go for it and pray for the best. I hoping so much that I can be one of those success stories. Hammock Hanger is hiking like she never has in years. I mean I can't do more than 50 - 100 miles right now without a lot of recovery time so if that's all I wind up being able to do after the procedure I'll be no worse than I am now. I'll do everything they say right to the letter and hope for the best.

I've mentioned this before so I'm not going to rehash everything, but my dad needed both knees replaced and had the first one done and is in worse shape now than before. He's gone from hiking with pain to not being able to hike at all. He's not going to get the other one done because of the results of the first one. His surgeon said he is the only the 3rd patient in his career to have as many complications and to end up being worse off. So no guarantees. Good luck to ATM.

Thanks Max. Here's the surgeon I'm going to see in Nov. She has gained quite a reputation amongst those in the business. Please note we dont really "skip" anything at all.
IM has been almost lily white pure..
The rest of us are keeping up (he's v fast now) by an occasional blue blaze of a mile or two.
I skipped a day recently to "talk"with my wife and follow up some stuff that had to be done. We have always intended to do ALL of NH and Maine.

I agree wholly, Jacko. It's amazing country up there. The only planned non-white-blaze I'd consider, other than side trips, would be to do the loop trails over the summits of Eisenhower, Monroe, Clay, Jefferson and Adams instead of the Crawford Path and the Gulfside Trails for those sections. The views on Eisenhower Loop, ascending and descending, are some of the best I've seen - imo, they rival Franconia Ridge and Washington's shoulders and summit - I'd bet the rewards are similar for the other "official" peaks and for Clay. I'm planning to do the Star Lake Trail between Adams summit at Madison Spring Hut, too - you could do that as an extra if you get work- or pay-for-stay at the hut.

Also, if you haven't already - spring for the AMC White Mountain Guide - you can get it at the Dartmouth Coop right on the A.T. (Main Street) in Hanover. The maps are priceless and will clearly show you both the route and all bail-out options and side trips. You needn't bother carry the book everywhere, it weighs about a pound, or you can take turns if you like. But the maps are superb. If there's an EMS nearby in Manchester Center, you can get it there.

I'd highly recommend slacking Moosilauke SOBO, Jacko, like Lou and I just did. Much safer to go up Beaver Brook than down - the challenge of going up is fun rather than a knee-crushing, slick and treacherous descent. Descending the south size is not easy for the first stretch below the South Peak, but it's dryer and a bit less treacherous than Beaver Brook. Finally, right by Rt. 25 in Glencliff you do a pretty big ford - Oliverian Brook. I enjoyed doing it at the end of the day, getting my feet and legs wet up to the knee. Refreshing! It would be an annoying slow-down at the beginning of the day.

Also, on Moosilauke, if you get a nice day, absolutely pop up to South Peak from the Glencliff/Carriage Road split. A quick trip affording awesome views (pics from my May 5, 2012 hike):

Ended my hike in Pearisburg, VA. Did not get as far as I wanted (356 miles from Hot Springs, NC), but my dad is having open heart surgery. Hiker Mom is so kind and picking me up so I can catch a bus to Asheville, NC. I should get to meet Deer Hunter also. Met a lot of neat people out here. Probably be a week before I get home, but I will get pictures and a trip report together.

Sorry to hear about your dad, hope all goes well. My hike ended at Pearisburg as well this year, I'll take it up again there this fall or in the spring.

I would sincerely hope not, although Invisible would no doubt like to risk it several times before leaving the country.
I have pointed out he can't borrow my vasectomy....

Looks like you picked a good day for a zero, Oz. Sorry I couldn't make it up to VT yesterday - I'm getting slammed at work. Gotta plow through it. I did get a local day hike in yesterday - Bear Mtn, which you'll remember. I thought there'd be blueberries, since y'all encountered a bounty on Race and Everett, but Bear's bushes were surprisingly unproductive. I guess the dry summer last year hit them harder there than on neighboring hills and they are taking an easy summer to recover. That was a disappointment, but the mountain was its usual rocky, beautiful self. Never tire of it - this was something like my 8th visit to it since 2006.

Funny thing is, I found it easier going yesterday, climbing 1600' total in 2.7 miles one way, than the two miles I did to meet you couple weeks ago in the almost-flats - the temperature and humidity make a huge difference. Speaking of which, I bet you're enjoying VT in that respect, usually a bit cooler + the weather's moderated. Probably a bit chilly in the morning!

View from the GSMNP at the jumpoff. 17 miles in 6 hours today. I almost stopped to smell the roses but couldn't find any.
