another thing to look forward to! one grandkid already (she's almost 6) with a second due in Dec.
so where you headed with yours on the 5-mile loop?
http://www.fws.gov/merrittisland/Drive.html Half way around this drive is a 5 mile loop walk that goes into the Indian River Marsh land. We went in today about 1.5 miles and turned and walked back out. The Gson with me was only 5 and the tall grasses were slowing him to the point that I was going to have to carry him if we didn't do a retreat. He had a good time though and got a glimpse of a Bobcat and a couple of raccoon.

I hate anonymous attacks.
Even with a name some people remain extremely anonymous.
Don't you find not one picture or blog over so many years strange?
Not one insight except a succesion of attacks on what others do, strange rants and advice given on numerous issues in an almost pontifical manner.
I would welcome a face to face chat but know it would never happen.

Ended my hike in Pearisburg, VA. Did not get as far as I wanted (356 miles from Hot Springs, NC), but my dad is having open heart surgery. Hiker Mom is so kind and picking me up so I can catch a bus to Asheville, NC. I should get to meet Deer Hunter also. Met a lot of neat people out here. Probably be a week before I get home, but I will get pictures and a trip report together.

Sorry to hear you had to cut your hike short & the reason for it. My prayers for your dad's speedy recovery. Looking forward to the report & pics.

I agree wholly, Jacko. It's amazing country up there. The only planned non-white-blaze I'd consider, other than side trips, would be to do the loop trails over the summits of Eisenhower, Monroe, Clay, Jefferson and Adams instead of the Crawford Path and the Gulfside Trails for those sections. The views on Eisenhower Loop, ascending and descending, are some of the best I've seen - imo, they rival Franconia Ridge and Washington's shoulders and summit - I'd bet the rewards are similar for the other "official" peaks and for Clay. I'm planning to do the Star Lake Trail between Adams summit at Madison Spring Hut, too - you could do that as an extra if you get work- or pay-for-stay at the hut.

Also, if you haven't already - spring for the AMC White Mountain Guide - you can get it at the Dartmouth Coop right on the A.T. (Main Street) in Hanover. The maps are priceless and will clearly show you both the route and all bail-out options and side trips. You needn't bother carry the book everywhere, it weighs about a pound, or you can take turns if you like. But the maps are superb. If there's an EMS nearby in Manchester Center, you can get it there.

I'd highly recommend slacking Moosilauke SOBO, Jacko, like Lou and I just did. Much safer to go up Beaver Brook than down - the challenge of going up is fun rather than a knee-crushing, slick and treacherous descent. Descending the south size is not easy for the first stretch below the South Peak, but it's dryer and a bit less treacherous than Beaver Brook. Finally, right by Rt. 25 in Glencliff you do a pretty big ford - Oliverian Brook. I enjoyed doing it at the end of the day, getting my feet and legs wet up to the knee. Refreshing! It would be an annoying slow-down at the beginning of the day.

Also, on Moosilauke, if you get a nice day, absolutely pop up to South Peak from the Glencliff/Carriage Road split. A quick trip affording awesome views (pics from my May 5, 2012 hike):

There was a kid that use to live across the street from me when I was growing up, he was about 5 years or so younger than me. He saw a picture I had drawn of the shakedown man, and decided to get a tattoo of it, I didn't know this till maybe 20 years later when I ran into him...cool lookin tattoo it was.

Thanks, Illabelle - they get me pumped, too, whenever I look at them, reminding me of that great day and awesome mountain. The icing on the cake was that it was Super Moon Day, May 5 last year, and the moon was rising as I finished, just at sunset. Got to see its beautiful gold self rise on the east all night as I drove I-91 homeward through VT and Mass. Plus, I caught the Red Sox game on a bunch of small local AM stations, and Saltalamacchia hit a walk-off home run for the win. Fine day all around. :)

The amazing thing, DH, is that it was even prettier in person. Neither Coach's nor my camera captured all the subtlety and intricacy of the clouds. It was as though Van Gogh had painted that sunrise himself for the 10 of us at Beaver Brook campsite that morning. really the most beautiful part of the scene was the 45 minutes to 1 hr from the first crack of dawn 'till the sun was up and out. Fat man from Hikers Welcome Hostel had told me that it would happen. We ALL went to bed very early so that we would catch it. We all woke at the first sliver of light and layed in our bags and gazed at it. It was wonderful, it was a different scene every minute, which is why I put 3 different pics of it in my gallery. Afterword, the walk up and down was brutal, the view on top was nothing special, but after that sunrise the day was over, nothing could have or did top it.

I hope to make it to Asheville in the next hour or so (9:30 to 10). We left for the bus station at 8 this morning. Several delays and switches. Originally was going down to SC and back to NC. Instead went through Knoxville, TN.

Wow. I figured you would be further along than that. I feel for ya, man.

Here is a start you can guess its a spot with a hammock

I think we saw those cairns in the best spooky light...as soon as I saw them I thought of Christmas Island. I probably took as many pics of them as you took of the waterfalls on the north side! :)

Yeah, they are awesome, Coach. I would've taken a bunch more pics of them had my phone battery not been such an issue. I ended up having to get a replacement phone, as that one was having all kind of issues - charging among them. I thought of Easter Island and Stonehenge, meself. Love that mountain - it's one where I want to do all its trails over time - Greylock, Sleeping Giant and Washington are also in that club, and I'm sure Katahdin will be once I get up there. ...

As a poor college student, I took Greyhound/Trailways buses back and forth from New Haven to Little Rock about a dozen times as a young man. The trip typically took 36 hours, continuous trip, sometimes as low as 30, sometimes 40. My worst memory was in Knoxville, believe it or not. In 1989, I think it was, the year of the bus drivers' strike, I spent about 10 hours on Christmas Eve, I think it was, sprawled on the floor in the station there - don't remember if it was G or T line, think it was T. Miserable. Could not sleep, as we waited for a driver to come in from, Cincinnati, I think it was. They were short-handed due to the strike. Miserable day would be an understatement. Trip ended up taking over 50 hours - 54, something like that. ...

Humorous query on "that" subject though...
The AT has a posted diversion (road walk) due to hurricane Irene damage.
The whiteblazes cannot physically be followed all the way.
By following orange tape for a half mile you can almost follow the whiteblazes.
The orange tape looks like it will be the 2014 trail.
The road walk is longer.
What should a purist do?
