I'm gettin' both done in Nov. Meeting with the surgeon on the 5th. I saw today on Nightly News that I'm one of 650,000 to get it done this year.

You'll be in good company, and much happier afterward! Good Luck!

Thanks. I'm really hyped. Was hoping to hit the trail next year, but from what I have heard and read I may have to wait till 2015. Heck, I waited 40 years to try this year what's one or two more. I want to be sure everything is in my favor.

He usually doesn't get too excited until just before we leave. For the most part, the planning leaves him flat, unless it involves videos. We'll be spending some time watching repeats of Appalachian Impressions and anything we can find on the ponies and McAfee Knob. There are also some VA sights for us to see unrelated to the AT and we'll be studying them soon.

Soon I'll start showing him WB pics of the places and people we'll see....like you and HikerMom

ATM, the only part of the Whites i've done is the piece from Mt Wash to Mizpah. don't even THINK of doing that before you get your new knees! yes, there are tougher areas in the Whites, as i'm sure the locals can tell you, but that one 6-mile section was educational - to say the least. i was carrying too much weight (on my body and in my pack), and I was using only one pole. if i ever make it back to the area, it will be after some serious conditioning, and i'll carry less weight, use two poles, and wear knee braces.

seriously though, my knees were in danger of buckling on the descent from mt wash to mizpah. yes, i know i was out of shape, but the point is that it wasn't my heart and lungs and muscles that set the limits. it was the knees, the swelling, aching, weak knees. my husband had to descend in front of me, and then i used him as a crash barrier because my knees could no longer support me on step-downs that were more than about 12" - and there were a lot of them.

Hey all, I'm back in the saddle. Currently, pecking away at my laptop on the drive home from the base of Mt. Moosilauke. Just finished Vermont. Never saw Chin - we were too far ahead and hiking fast. Did meet Moose who we met down in Southern VA last year. The look on his eyes when we re-introduced ourselves was just priceless. :)

Should have a trip report up in TJ later today.

Hangs head in shame...

Took me longer to finish then I thought. Plus I like to pretty up the pictures since the iPhone takes such crappy ones most of the time. It's up at trailjournals.com. Search for FarmerChef (http://trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?trailname=12617). Enjoy!

Things I didn't put in the report: I couldn't believe I missed Chin by only a day or two. Plus I was just a few ahead of Oz and crew. I'm crossing my fingers that maybe, just maybe I'll get to see them in the Whites. Since we're slacking or at least only packing 2 or 3 days food tops, I should have room for a few...extras. We'll see what the fates allow.

Bills was a blast! We played Croquet for half a game and Bill was so patient with the kids helping them learn how to play the game. Even had Moe on his lap for a bit talking about the trail. My favorite was when my son asked Bill if he had any ice cream in cones when he first saw the Dreamsicle Bill handed him. Priceless. He decided after the first bite that the Dreamsicle was his cup of tea.

Understand that the Ammo is really hard, especially on descent, the moreso on a wet day.

For a gentler though longer descent, you might consider a loop - Up Ammo, over or around Monroe, down along A.T./Crawford Path to col with Eisenhower, down Edmands Path either to Car 2 or bike or road walk to place of beginning. I'd highly recommend the side trip to Eisenhower if legs and time permit - even ascending it halfway on the Loop Trail from the north, the views are outstanding.

You can park, for Ammo, either at the USFS parking area or up in Cog Railway parking. Either way, you pay to park, $3 at USFS, $5, I hear, with Cog.

Sorry. Should point out that the last 10 entries are the trek through Vermont. As I get to it, I'll cross post pics into the gallery here. It always takes so long to edit the captions...

Nice pictures, FC. I think it is so great that you are able to enjoy doing something with your whole family.

Where does a pirate keep his buccaneers?

Buccaneer? That's a terrible price for corn! Piracy!

No posts - zip, zero, nada - for 2 days and 5 hours on Trailplace. I remember when it was the biggest and best AT forum around. They may want to consider euthanasia.

It's time I make a public confession... My name is Water Rat and my hiking addiction is only getting worse. I recently scampered around on Katahdin and cannot get the grin off my face. :D

Please tell me there is no known CURE!!!

Oh, well... As long as there isn't anything less drastic that cures it! :D How was the car camping?

It was fun. Rained almost every day. Tent leaked like crazy. On the bright side we had Mountain Dew and Beer!

well i started this thread just over a year ago, and we've been able to maintain a continuous conversation for all that time, it became a place where we became more than just screen names, we became a family.you guys were there with me all through sandy last year, and we've been there for each other when one of us was going through a rough spot.ive had the great fortune to meet many of you and hike with quite a few as well.and, well, its all been good.
i have to thank attroll and alligator for putting up with all of our nonsense.this is a hiking website and humor and entertainment are secondary to the main focus of being an informational resource for long distance hiking.they gave us the space for us together to create something special.
