What's up everybody - I haven't posted anything in a while - sometimes the posts get old - "should I carry a water filter?" "will I be ok alone?" "What should my pack weigh?" - ho hum - I'll report on my day:

Got up, made breakfast for my daughter who went to work with my wife for an hour, I then went for a 6 mile run which was fun, then I picked up my daughter and went to the park to shoot our model rocket (twice), went to the farmer's market, then I went to Home Depot (not my fav) to buy a trap to catch a mouse that seems to have taken up in our kitchen (it's a live trap such that I can deliver it back to the forest) - it's now baited with dog food. Since my wife thinks it's a rat (and not a mouse), I've also baited my raccoon live trap in the same way. Hopefully in the morning, I'll have a captive.

Just cracked a beer ... wife is at the gym.

Oh, yeah - I'm meeting my friend Jeep at 6:30am to head to NC and go rock climbing - - interesting weekend so far. (welcome to my life)

Where is everyone? Y'all where supposed to meet me. Spent 10 hours hiking in the rain and thunder today. Will be in Damascus tomorrow. I gotta cut my trip two days short because I got called from work. So Bob Peoples shuttled me 25 miles north to make up the time.

My dinner tonight was Israeli cous cous with chicken, peas, carrots, leeks, corn, extra virgin olive oil and Parmesan cheese. It good to be a chef, I saw what some Southbounds where eating. Yikes!

YES! I was excited to see that they did too. We got ours at a place called Hobby Lobby here in Athens. The Estes rockets that I made as a kid are (hopefully) still in my Mom's attic. The next time I'm there, I'm going to check. We just built a simple one - we fired it with an A-8 -3 which flew about 500' and then with a B-6 -4 engine that likely flew over 1000' - - super, super cool. My 6 year old (almost 7) really liked gluing the parts together and so forth - we just got a medium size rocket that was a "level 1" (easiest to make) - - I think that for the next one, we'll get something a little more complex. I'd also like to build my own launcher - - the one that came with our "kit" is only fair - - but my kid thinks it's ultra-cool.

The peakbagging Sat. hike of Carrigain which I bailed on due to rain in the forecast ended up getting no rain. As for me, rather than a run up to Killington Sunday, venturing rain again, I think I'm gonna do Undermountain/A.T./Bear Mtn Road, etc., to Mt. Frissell Trail and South Taconic Trail, then return via Bear Mtn from the north side. S/b a good workout, and it'll be nice finally to summit Frissell and the Braces. Hoping for good weather.

Meant also to say, Sat turned out well for me. A good friend who seldom can get together freed up for a guys' night out when his wife and three daughters kicked him out for an all-girls' PJ party for the grade school and pre-school set. We and another friend took in the Bourne Legacy, which we enjoyed - some great Alaska and Southeast Asia scenery and great chase scenes - and bar hopping, mostly just taking in the scene. Wouldn't have happened had I been up in New Hampster. Hoping Columbus Day weekend comes with good weather, so I can make my way up then.

Nice, I was wondering how he was on the site so often.

The android app is really good. It's what I use 90% of the time.

Just so the anti-cell phoner's don't get upset. I'm in my tent two miles from the next campers and it's on silent so I don't disturb the squirrels!

aaahhhh Mark "Jacko" Jackson.
A character from our national football.
Many years ago he was a star forward playing football.
I was convinced at the time is IQ was about 75 but I'm not so sure anymore.
He made a good living outside the game playing the buffoon.
He was noted for having tantrums and as a bg man was quite intimidating.
Headbutting was a popular tactic he had.
Also had lost teeth at a young age and took his false teeth out to play instead of using a mouthguard.

No - I don't think he and I are a match....:)

Yep! Tomorrow heading into the Greyson Highlands in the rain. Forecast is calling for 20 to 30 mph winds at Mt. Rogers. I will most likely tent just north of Thomas Knob shelter unless the wind is too heavy.

Since I'm going to Greyson does anyone have any pony recipes handy?
you're doin' 28 miles tomorrow?

No. Just 12. Cheating a bit because I was lazy and needed to rest my knee but need to get home by Saturday so I'm skipping to highway 58.

Where did Rasty start and where is he finishing?

Started at Roan and went to Kincora then skipped to Shady Valley and went to Damascus. Skipping a bit tomorrow to 58 at Beach mountain then finishing at Partnership shelter. I just can't get past the 17 miles a day to keep on schedule. I feel good until around 15 miles then the next downhill stretch my left knee acts up. The next morning I'm ok.

Lesson learned is hike away from my car then get a shuttle back after I know how many miles I can do in the time I have.

Have you read "Becoming Odyssa" by Jennifer Pharr Davis, HikerMom? I just finished it and recommend it if you haven't. Have a feeling you'll like it. It came to mind b/c you spoke of the stinkiness of the SOBOs. One funny thing Jen notes is that in Maine, a group of SOBOs she ran into, new in their hikes, were all clean and looked and smelled great, in contract to her and her two partners on the trail.

I like a hot drink.
Coffee is my poison of choice here but I gather the majority in the US are a different sort of taste (other Aussies tell me it is more bitter generally). Also I don't like coffee with powdered milk. (Over here I often hike with a litre of milk).
I'm not a big fan of tea but can drink it black while I don't like black coffee.
We have a common chocolate/energy type drink here (Milo) which I don't mind with powdered milk, so will do some taste testing on brands over there in March.
If all else fails I'll just have to drink beer......

Us Yanks unfortunately drink coffee from beans that are typically over roasted. Nescafe is similar worldwide and smoother in comparison. I have a weak spot for Earl Grey Iced tea, or moreover they call it Lady Grey Iced Tea from Twinnings if London. Yes, we Yanks consume most of our tea cold.

That matches - Nescafe is my preferred taste. Current bulging stomach is more than a little caused by numerous coffees with very high milk content made on our "pod" coffee maker. Unlike George Clooney I most definitely do NOT have decaf. Seems pointless in a coffee to me.
Do you think Nescafe could bring out an ultralight pod coffee maker with milk creamer than can run off two AAA batteries?:-?

Rasty, it was great meeting you as well. Thanks again for slowing down to keep back with me for a while.

After you took off, I hiked back to my car as planned. Got there around 4:30 or so. I had just put my pack in the trunk and was going to take off back to my cabin and at the last moment I just said to heck with it and put the pack back on. Hiked my way back toward the shelter where we had lunch (Stan Murray, right?) and pitched my tent in a clearing nearby and stayed the night. It didn't help any with that cold I had, but I didn't care. I had to at least stay out on the trail one night instead of just wimpy day hiking it.

OK I'm putting my hand up for egg on my face.
I normally read posts through the "new posts" link and saw yet another wannabee ultralight hiker post and made what I thought was a really good reply. Then afterwards I realised it was in the ultralight forum so my comments were "inappropriate" because I don't have an ultralight perspective. So I editted them out before I got my head bitten off (sometimes time differences can help).

But it always bugs me a bit that new hikers want to be UL from the get go.
I admire Ray Jardine and his followers for what they can do and how they help push the weights of gear down, but I'll only ever be lightweight in my gear, not UL.
To me true UL is always on the edge stuff. When someone just starting out tries to get a 9 pound pack or whatever other goal they have, to me it's like just getting your drivers licence in a Toyota Corolla and your first drive further than the local supermarket you want to bang doors with a Chevy at Daytona.

Days like this I feel my age. Maybe I'm just miserable because I'm not paddling down 2500km of Australia's biggest river.:( And I have to wait about 10 days for my new pack to get here!!:(:(

A friend (the young bloke paddling at the moment) has a youtube that starts with the whole thing shown.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHQeK0Ax9RY&feature=plcp
The forest just inland from the coast is pretty much that - forest.
The lower southwest corner of my state has what is called the Darling Range or Scarp running down the left from north of Perth to just below the Bunbury level. It is actually the edge of the low plateau that the rest of the state is. To the west of the scarp is a coastal plain.
The coastal plain is pretty much all urban/small farms. The scarp is mostly forest (with some bauxite mining and forestry) and then to the east is a fairly wide band referred to as the wheatbelt. This is as the name suggests, larger farms, predominantly growing grain and sheep. The track goes down the forestry (about 3 distinct types of tree types) to the south coast and then turns to Albany along the coast. The south coast has no coastal plain and is beaches and granite headlands mostly.
