Did you know that gsmnp is now charging fees, that you can return 25 yr old boots to rei, that ignore laws you dont agree with.its been an interesting day.

Can you return your GSMNP permit if you feel that you didn't get your money's worth out of it?

Will they still accept the return of you've already used the permit to hike the whole park?

$4.57/gallon? Are you buying that fancy premium stuff? I think it's still $4.09 for regular in shelton. Probably $0.60/gallon cheaper if you get outside of the northeast.

Hey I was thinking when I'm through with my hike next year, I'll write a book and then I'll post a really great review of it on every hiking site I can find using all the trailnames you guys have and then maybe I'll start a gun thread so everybody gets too distracted to pick holes in my reviews....

I have two friends that talked me into running the Art Loeb Trail in NC in a day this next Thursday (oct. 11) - they bailed. It's still on my schedule - I plan to camp out Wednesday night near Daniel Boone Scout Camp in Pisgah Forest, NC, run the trail, and arrive at Davidson River Campground Thursday night (where I may stash a beer or two in the river). I'll likely hitch-hike the shuttle to the top on Wednesday - - if anybody wants to join me, let me know - - I'm going to carry a camelbak mule with a light rain jacket, cliff bars, gu, and aqua-mira - that's all - goal is about 3 miles per hour. The last time I did this hike, it took me 11 hours - - I think I can cut it to 9 hours with some efficiency.

I have this in my bookmarks because I'm forever converting stuff you guys post.
http://www.onlineconversion.com/

I'm old enough that I grew up with miles and gallons and pounds/ounces but I have problems.
Miles, yards etc - no problem. I can convert in my head but don't need to as they have "meaning" to me and I don't need conversion.
Pounds are a bit different as I am getting there with pack weights etc, but when I was a young 'un we used "stones" i.e. 14 pounds as a unit.
I used to be 11 stone and a few pounds etc. Need to convert to now make sense of what my 95+ kilograms equates to.

Volume is the biggie.
Your pints/gallons etc are different from the ones I grew up with. Not too bad when I worked out your pint is almost exactly a litre but our pint was 16 ounces not 20, but then your ounces are different too.
Locally they measure backpack volume in cubic centremetres. e.g. 3300cc backpack.

Our pint is 16 ounces too! A quart is two pints (32oz) which is 1.5oz less than a liter.

2 tablespoon = 1 ounce
8 ounce = 1 cup
2 cup = 1 pint
2 pint = 1 quart
4 quart = 1 gallon

You might be looking at old imperial measurements which I think only the English colonies used.

If its windy it could use another stake to hold it down. Use one of your tent stakes. Works like a champ. I'm trying to add a simmer ring but the burn time was the same on my first attempt.

All you need is the wood sticks from the store and raw ingredients and a sauce packet... its all about a lightweight support such as fish grill pilfered from an old mini stove...or you use one of the rim units on a wood support. Honest a old school green switch and a knife would get you there too.

Then ask Rasty how to put the rods down the mouse...I prefer them whole.....

PD, my friend:

I'm starting to run a bit. Twice this week did 7ish miles in my flatish town, 1.5 miles of it jogging in the first go of 6.6 miles, 2 miles of it running Friday night on a 7.3 mile jaunt. Both times the pavement pounded my frame quite a bit - left hip sore both times, but both times I got that addictive runner's high that begs for a fix. A good thing for me since running locally is easier and cheaper than long trips to hiking trails. I'm toying in my mind with setting a goal - to complete a local Thanksgiving 4 mile race for the first time, running the whole thing, of course with a few water stops. If I could complete the thing in 50 minutes or better, I'd be thrilled. Just running the two miles Friday, in several spates, was the most I've run in one day in I don't know how long. Great feeling.

To be clear, I love to hike, but can't do it every day like I'd like. Getting in two or three run/walks a week of significant distance, plus a hike or two weekends, and it starts to have the same effect of long-distance backpacking - big calorie burn. Been hitting the gym a lot, but something about running, especially, that is better even yet, weather permitting.

True, the antlers might snag on branches. But, they might also come in handy to just throw a poncho over - Instant shelter!

If you go skunk-mode...I would worry you might be chased, rather than left alone. Look at Pepe - He seems to attract a lot of attention.

By the time you get here, the 1 dollar bill will be obsolete:(
We dumped ours decades ago and the $2 not long afterward. Coins now. Notes start at $5.
They had to bring out a new $5 note as tradition demands the Queens pic on lowest note. (Sort of appropriate really).

Damn!
I'm going to have to majorly change my gear for next year then!
I thought if I had enough camo all the people with guns wouldn't see me.

I was bow hunting in VA, easing along quietly, saw this small red spec, couldn't figure out what it was, walked closer to see what it was, got within 5 yards and noticed it was a hunter's arrow knock, in his bow, him sitting next to a tree, best camo I've seen, never saw the guy at all until right on him, offered appologies and moved on.

Good for you D8 - sorry I bailed out on Whiteblaze last night - had chores to attend to - had poured myself a glass of wine and sat down in front of the computer but then realized that I had laundry to attend to (literally) and other housework - - settled in for an hour or so now ..... I'm glad you are running - - the better shape you are in, the more you will enjoy your hikes (and the shorter (what most people think of as long-distances) will seem).

Already happening, PD. A fine thing. At the mo, am reckoning with a naggy, unpleasant sore throat and cold. Argh. Zicam, store brand, does appear to be helping a bit.

We had a high of 77* today. There was a crew regatta on my river this morning and I'm gonna take the ski boat out of the water on Monday.

Well that changed quick... We're in the 40's now and I've got the wood stove fired up, though I admit that's because I like using it. Fun though.

Had a good day, ran the dogs on the horse trails, they're listening great. For the first time in the eight years I've hiked those trails we had several barred owls sounding off around us in the pines, all in all a good weekend.

Starbucks Via is the way to go! I used to take grounds and a press, I like good coffee. It is spendy... but it is lite to carry and comes in individual packets. But then, it's availibility along the trail would be the question, because you are not going to have mail drops are you? I have no trail experience below SNP.

if you soak them in hydrochloric acid for 6 hrs, your feet will be as tough as bone.no worries about toenails either.
your shoes may loosen a bit, too.try superfeet.

my favorite winter lunch is pizza. im not sure what that was all about. were they talking about on the trail?

on the trail of course i would carry it in a waterproof compression sack, rather than stuff it in the bottom of my pack.but only northbound. southbound i would hang it on the outside of my pack to dry.
