Longest I've run in a day since my 20s, I think. I've set a goal to do the Manchester, CT 4 mile Thanksgiving race in under 50 mins. Doable, I think. I long ago gave up rating the attractiveness of women on their appearance alone.
If the personality ain't there, the likeability ain't either.
I suppose the same is true from the female perspective.

Driver 8 - - a couple of years ago, i started the Athens GA Half Marathon. If you want a goal, plan on running in it in 2013. It's 13.1 miles in Athens, GA. There is a 3.5 hour time limit (so it can basically be walked) but you should be able to run it in about 2:45 or so by this time next year. If you make it a goal, my wife and I will host you at our house in Athens, take you out to dinner compete with adult beverages - post race. Maybe we can even go out in Athens and see a band, etc. How cool would that be?

katahdin to monson should take 10-11 days,12 if we lollygag.two nights in baxter, then the 100 mile. im thinking if you're coming along we can do drops at jo-mary and katahdin iron works, go light, so we dont have to soak our knees as often. it really works by the way, but theyve got it all wrong. its green tea, not black, has higher antioxidant propertiies. soak your knees for three hours in 2" of freshley brewed green tea in your bathtub.you must not let the tea touch any other part of your body, thats critical.

I like the way you think, D. Would love to make that trip - too far in the future to plan it, but love the idea and thanks for the invite. :) P.S. the Manchester Road Race is in fact 4.748 miles, so my target will be to come in under an hour. 55 mins would be awesome, but not inconceivable. Will keep you posted on my progress.

Meanwhile, I WANT to go up to New Hampster this weekend, but it will be COLD, so I'm not sure. May go and take on Monroe Sat, given that it's the last day for Lakes Hut, and if I'm feeling frisky do the Eisenhower loop. Would mean three hikes on the Ammo Trail this year and I do love that trail. We'll see. Might do Flume and Liberty, ascending the fearsome Flume Slide Trail and looping back to Liberty. And may just decide not to subject myself to the cold. Will stay overnight at Chet's if he's around and I make the trip.

Actually the bit that is annoying is that the shipping in US is free, so I reckon they should give a bit of a discount on overseas.
The REI bag is NOT UL!
Daniel is a big boy. Purchase was made on several criteria other than the weight.
Bag is down of course but design and size is what swayed choice as he turns in his sleep and dislikes constrictiveness of mummy bags..

It took me a while to find the job that was right for me. I did my time, working jobs I really didn't like. The worst (for me) was working a job where I made a lot of money, but never had time off. That just didn't fit my personality. I just needed to figure out what my priorities were, then I found this job. Fits me perfect and I usually love my job.... Not saying there aren't days when I ask myself WHY I took this job (thankfully, those days are few and far between). It's just that I can usually look at the positives and see they far outweigh any negatives.

Besides, it allows me to work from home (most of the year) and the dogs love that!

Well no and no.
The trip to Europe looks off (until after we return from AT) but not because of wife.
Daniel has had a few things disrupting what was meant to be the time he was going to hike the Bibbulmun (like about now).
So we are going to use the 2-3 weeks between finishing work and getting to Georgia to hike 150-200 miles of Bibbulmun together.
We have decided on a big section of the southern half which should get us in shape but doesn't have rock etc (much anyway) to abuse our feet.

Harriman is a beautiful park, some 44ooo acres with countless trails and loops, has history dating to the revolutionary war, ruins of an old settlement, doodletown, abandoned iron mines that supplied the foundaries that built the cannonballs that helped us win the war. i see more wildlife there than any time ive been up north. deer, bears, porkies, rattlesnakes, numerous othr snakes, hawks, falcons, turkey vultures, woodpeckers.

So only half star accommodations? I always make my own food so I vote for drops instead of resupply at Whitehouse. I would fly into bangor and get a shuttle to Baxter. NC to Maine would be a 20 hour drive and the gas is more than the plane ticket and shuttle combined.

the bus from ny goes to bangor, so i could meet you there.but if you trake a bus with me from bangor to medway,we can get a shuttle to the AT lodge stay there ovrnight. they run a shuttle into baxter where you get there early enough to climb katahdin, meaning we only have to stay one night in the park instead of 2. up and down katahdin takes anywhere from 8-10 hours. i started up the hunt trail at 8:30, summitted just before 1pm got back down to camp at 6:15. spent maybe 40 minutes on the summit. surrounded in clouds, rained most of the way down.

That's what I am talking about.

BTW, has anybody here ever met Dawn? Is she Swiss by chance?

heard from mandela last night, he and terranauta, flip floppers i met in maine, are now in NY.ill meet them somewhere in harriman tomorrow, itll be great to see them again.i cant wait to get out tomorrow, after today im off till wednesday. weather looks great for tomorrow, and tuesday with a chance of rain or thundershowers monday afternoon/eve.
i still havent made up my mind as to whether to hike from harriman to greenwood lake or just to do some loops in harriman(the logistics with a single car are a lot easier). the other option is to take the train into manhatten then a bus to arden valley road. thn a bus back from greenwood lake to NYC and train home.but then i have to worry about bus schedules, and if im only out 3 days, id rather have no worries.probbably stay around harriman.
whatever, its all good.

Enjoy whichever you do. The big advantage of the car is it increases time hiking as you go direct etc, but adds hassle of worrying about it.
I'm having my day hike with wife tomorrow, thankfully it's coolled down here - had been getting to high 80's F.
A friend (spouse of one of my wifes best friends) is starting a week and a bit on the Bibbulmun with some mates tomorrow week so I have an excuse to do some part day trips to meet them with trail magic as well as another full day hike next Sunday.
Like your signature says... "It's all good"!!!!:D

Never in my youth, but the young folk are adopting it the last couple of years.
I'm not happy about that as despite my liking for things American, I feel a bit like my culture is being eroded.
An idigenous Australian may feel that I have nothing to complain about, but I dislike the way the TV and movies etc override us sometimes.
I don't expect you guys to like Vegemite, just like I expect that I won't like so much cheese on everything (I NEVER buy burgers with cheese here).
But if it gets any worse, they'll start celebrating Thanksgiving here soon.

We have a 2005 Subaru Forester I use when day hiking.
Wouldn't leave the 2012 XV anywhere though.
Until start of this year had a 1988 Subaru that I bought for $900 in 2006 and I never had any doubts about leaving that anywhere.:D It had the advantage I didn't hesitate to drive it into anything either. Had a roo bar and sometimes just drove into the bushes.
Owned that car for 6 years and never once washed it. My eldest son serviced it twice, other than that never spent a cent on it. It now resides (unlicensed) on my wife's family farm as a fox shooting vehicle.

-Hello
Is this VaperGirl?
-Nope. I'm Fred. No VaperGirl here that I know of.
Well. I have 6 pizza to deliver and need better directions or something. VaperGirl said to drive to the end of Cleaver Road and honk the horn. Someone would be right there. I'm at the end of Cleaver Road and honked the horn three times. Nobody.
-OH! PIZZA! Do you see a big tree with the top twisted off?
Why?
-Cuz that's the end of the road.
I'm on Cleaver Road, at the gate/bar dooey....the end of the road and......
-No no no. Go around that bar. The road goes for another mile or two....
And Vapergirl will meet me and pay for the pizza?
- No VaperGirl here but I will hike down there now. Look for that big chewed up tree. I will meet you there!

Found this torn sheet on the floor. Must be from someone's journal........

That plus some microspikes, gaiters, better gloves and an additional foam pad should do it. My plan would be to take the 40 degree bag and the 0 degree quilt.

I went and did a short up-and-back to Bear Mtn, CT yesterday, then went to the CT AMC A.T. Day bbq at Macedonia Brook SP. Beautiful day with crystal clear views. Since this was a familiar and easy now for me hike, I timed my trip to compare with past results. Got up the 2.7 miles and 1560' in 1:26, 34 mins better than my previous best and 30 mins better than book time. Only took one water/rest break on the climb, at the stone steps at the big turn by the brook just before Paradise Lane. Lots of people out - about 30 cars parked on CT 41 and the lot was full, have never seen it so busy. Socialized with the crowd at the summit and poked around to take a few pics and take in the view, then headed back down. Did that trek in 59 mins, jogging about 0.8 of it and stopping only twice, to chat with a couple hikers I'd seen at the summit who had a question and to take some pics at my favorite spot on the Undermountain - between the big turn and the wooden sit bench - to take some pics where the fall colors were prettiest to my eye.

Foliage views were a bit dull - not sure why. On the drive out, then down the Rt. 7 corridor and back through Litchfield the colors and foliage varied. Some places, where I guess the winds had been strong, the leaves were all down, other places, lots of the leaves were still green. Hard to figure. Plenty of pretty colors to be seen along the way, however.

The CT AMC picnic was fun. Nice to chat with lots of avid fellow hikers. Think I'm finally gonna get more involved with our chapter.

Finally, on a totally non-political but funny point, as I drove Rt. 7 to the picnic, I kept noting how very many state police there were stationed at major intersections. Began to wonder if there were some escaped convict manhunt going or the like. After Cornwall Bridge, I started to pass several staties in a row. Then, a motorcade of SUVs, front lights blinking, blue and reds flashing. As I start to pull to my shoulder to make way, the lead vehic turns into my path to push me even further off. I'm like, "I've seen this sort of thing before. Who is this? Couldn't be Pres. Obama, could it? Hillary? Bill? Romney?" As the motorcade passes, one of them is the trademark SWAT team vehic with the rear hatch open, a couple cars ahead of an ambulance car. Definitely a pres-style motorcade, but it's not as big as the ones I remember from when I worked on the Clinton campaign in '96 for Bubba.

So I keep heading toward Kent, then run into a traffic stoppage. Takes 5-10 mins to get to the front of the line - they let about 10 of us go at a time, then they let something like 30 vehics pull out of this long driveway on the west side of 7. Almost all of them expensive luxury models, Mercedes, Beemers, Lexus, etc. Lots of Dem political yard signs at the head of the driveway and in next door neighbor's yard. I put two and two together - it's a ritzy high-donor fundraiser for the Dems, probably with one of the above big-name Dems as headliner, whose motorcade had blown by me. A mile and a half south, as I run into leaf-peeper traffic in the village and get internet on my phone, I google: "political fundraiser today Kent" and get this: http://www.countytimes.com/articles/2012/10/10/news/doc5074a9fd141db894867889.txt.

Turns out it was Joe Biden - which explained the big caravan, but not as big as a Presidential cavalcade. Had I known, personally I would have cheered. Turns out his motorcade, coming in a couple hour before, had slowed some of the folks at the picnic and then several others, like myself, as he left. Thinking about it afterward, I guess my move to the shoulder - instinctive when confronted with police or emergency vehicles anymore - may not have been the right response. They might think you're putting yourself in a spot to take try and do harm, the last thing I'd've done. Weird world those guys live in, both the Prezzes and VPs and those who protect them.

Yeah, it's neat when you see one of those, Elf - the fun part for me was the sleuthing element of figuring out what was going on and who it was.

In the meantime, we've gotta get a hike together for you, me and maybe some others. I'm hoping there's still a good weekend or two in the Whites or VT, we've been striking out lately up that way. Being a long distance hiker and being able to hike a long way has always been a pick-me-up - - re-hiking the AT has always been something that has made me feel good and I'm about half done. I have taken Welbutrin (anti-depressent) in the Fall -September through November only - the Fall makes me sad for some reason (which is crazy because it is beautiful and also my favorite weather) - anyway - - a really good hiking challenge gets me out of it. This past Thursday, I hiked a 31 mile trail (The Art Loeb / NC) in 8 hours - - I need some more challenges like this- I am considering going to VA next week to do the 4-state challenge - anything hard and crazy takes my mind to a good place - pitch in with some good challenge for me please .... I'll do up to 100 miles if you tell me to - - more than that,my family will find me really nuts and reel me in.

How about just driving there and doing the half gallon challenge? :D That would be an accomplishment if you could pull it off without the benefit of hiker hunger.

When I was at the church hostel in Vernon last year, some of the faster thru hikers were challenging eachother to try and hike all of Connecticut (just over 50 miles) in 24 hours without slackpacking. I still wonder how they all did.

Hmm, Drew. I think some of the peakbaggers and Whites hikers like to do a winter Presidential Traverse, usu up to Madison from Rt. 2 on the Valley Way, over Adams, Jefferson, Clay, Washington, Monroe, Eisenhower, Pierce and Jackson via A.T. and summit loop trails, then down from Jackson to Crawford Notch. They wait for a crystal clear, calm, not too cold day, usu in Feb. I don't yet have the legs to pull that off, s/b able next year to do a warm-season P.T., if progress continues as it has.

well im back from my little 3 day up in harriman. leaves are changing but still mostly green. i parked at elks pen, hiiked in to just before wm obrien shelter when i met up with mandela and terranauta, 2 flipfloppers i had hiked with in maine. we hung aout and talked for a while, then i hiked back south with them until i got to the turnoff for the long path.the were headed for wildcat shelter that day and i wsnt ready for an 18 mile day, i had already planned on going up the long path. so we said our goodbyes, they promises to visit the cafe, theyll be finishing in virginia.
i stayed sunday night at stockbridege shelter, in a fairly remote area , alone, and slept that night alongside the shelter on a slab under a star filled sky.
monday morning i woke made coffee and had a couple of poptarts, and went down t the menomine trail to intersect with the ramapo dudnerberg trail which runs with the at at different junctures. started raining about noon time and around 2pm i got to fingerboard shelter.hadnt seen anyone all day.enjoyed listening to the rain on the leaves and watching the birds, got a pretty good shot of a hairy woodpecker. it was a damp dreary day, i made some coffee and hung out with pepe, and around 5pm i spotted movement in the ravine below adn caught glimpse of either a dog or a coyote maybe 200 yds away. that kindaa spooked me a bit, but didnt see him again.a little while later a gentleman showed up with an old overstuffed frame pack, looking very much like the description of the murdererer posted at the trailheads. told me his name was peasly, who has section hiked the at completely 4 times. he told me the police had actually stopped him and questioned him as he did look very similar to the posters picture, they explained 4 yound day hikers that had passed peasly on the trail earlier that day had reported it to the park police. he was jovial enough, we ate dinned talked abouut politics inn the evening and religion in the morning.
and we got along.
we said our goodbyes and as he continued south towards DWG, i took the rd trail instead to do a few more loops before returning to my car and driving home.hot shower and a seak dinner later, im sated, at least for now.
it was a good couple of days.
life is good.

didnt need a one. got up this morning at 4am to relieve myslef and it waswindy cold and clear. its always a treat for me to get away from the city lights and really see the stars. even though the beach is far enough outside nyc, theres always humidity in the air, so if you see 100 or so staars on any given night, thats a lot.
this is major tom to ground control.

So the poor guy got stopped by the police...what a story to tell later..."yeah, I got stopped by the police because I looked like this murderer on the loose". At least the previous guys reported something...though wrong, at least they were responsible and did not bury their heads in the sand.

Well this is a first, but I decided to re-post my Facebook status to Whitblaze:

This was posted by one of my Facebook friends who just got back from finishing a continuous hike of the ~3100 mike Continental Divide Trail:

[Jester]: For all of those affected by the tremors felt in the northeast of the country:
I apologize, and promise to stop eating at Taco Bell.

Welcome back HB!!:)
Sounds like a great break you had.
Good thing you didn't panic and use one of your bullets on Peasly before he set you straight.

I was thinking of running some "caption" competitions.

Kick off with this one.
My suggestion is "I thought you had the bear bells..."
Any others??

what if haiku was the only acceptable form of debate?

Limericks would be more fun.

There was a young girl from Nantucket ...
I had a dark period in a former job and one day they had a haiku competition.
I wrote about 40 of them, never submitted one to the competition and changed jobs within 3 months.
They were very very dark.:(
But now... "It's all Good"

I always liked (and somhow remembered) that limerick from David Niven's autobiography.
There was a young man from Leeds,
Who swallowed a packet of seeds.
Great tufts of grass
Shot out of his ass
And his ####was covered in weeds.

Maybe we should stick with Haiku.

Hmmm Haiku....yea.

Is everything wrong?
Are you the only one right?
Time to see a shrink.

And speaking of shrinks . . .

How many light bulbs
Does it take to screw a shrink?
Oh, got it backwards.
