It's probably photo shopped. But then again, maybe not...
While we were hiking through Grayson Highlands, we hiked past a group of adults with pocket cameras and one bawling child, just in time to hear one of the women say, "Don't put him back on that pony over there! He already bucked him off! Try this one right here!"

Re my diet... I am actually not a very typical Aussie for food as I don't put tomato sauce (different from ketchup) on everything.
I'm essentially a steak and chips man. That's well done steak and french fries, preferably with a lot of cheap vinegar and plain salt.
But I expect after the first 3 weeks on the trail my dietary fussiness will start to decline markedly. Just let me wash everything down with a lot of cola from either of the big two and some beer and I'll manage. I may even eat a couple of vegetables! Andrew Skurkas chocolate based diet does look appealling.

im going through some mid life crisis, although im quite a few years short of mid life. aince i got back from maine, there have been some changes at work that i havent been able to adjust to, and i think i changed a bit as well. im at a point in my life where my kids have grown, im a grandpa, my job is secure, im making a pretty good living, and my boss lets me take time off when i need to.but lately i just love being out on the trail. i just spent the weekend in harriman, and i always end up meeting great people, wondering about how easily everyone gets along, how night after night you can sleep side by side with total strangers and know you have each others back.i had thought once again about thru hiking, but i really think id prefer to do 2 half thrus instead. not thrilled about the increasing number of people attempting it every year, really dont want to hike with the pack. id like to hike maine sobo and if i stay healthy get to dwg. then hike south the following summer from dwg in late august, see the south in the fall.

I love the bit about being a few years short of mid life - atta boy HB!

But seriously I can relate.
Changes at my work have annoyed/angered me and I am considering quitting this week.
I only intend to stay there another 19 weeks anyway and they've annoyed me so much that I feel like quitting now because they have so many drivers off at the moment (5 of 13) that it would really hurt them.
I think the phrase "grumpy old man" gets thrown around by my wife a bit lately.

im going through some mid life crisis, although im quite a few years short of mid life. aince i got back from maine, there have been some changes at work that i havent been able to adjust to, and i think i changed a bit as well. im at a point in my life where my kids have grown, im a grandpa, my job is secure, im making a pretty good living, and my boss lets me take time off when i need to.but lately i just love being out on the trail. i just spent the weekend in harriman, and i always end up meeting great people, wondering about how easily everyone gets along, how night after night you can sleep side by side with total strangers and know you have each others back.i had thought once again about thru hiking, but i really think id prefer to do 2 half thrus instead. not thrilled about the increasing number of people attempting it every year, really dont want to hike with the pack. id like to hike maine sobo and if i stay healthy get to dwg. then hike south the following summer from dwg in late august, see the south in the fall.

i just have wanderlust lately because of a lot of tension at work. maybe the feeling will pass.

i hope not.

Hit yourself on the head repeatedly with a blunt instrument. That will help the feeling pass. You've got a lot of nerve being happy, that's not what this world is for! Ssshhhh, makes me want to spank Pepe's butt. Now that I've straightened that up, I'll have a warm sasparilla

Hum.... the dancing banana's make me smile. :) It's great to know that you don't always have to be funny when you are feeling serious. You can rest assure that you aren't alone with your feelings.

I feel the same way sometimes. I just want to run into the woods and stay for a long long time. It is really good to know that you can meet strangers in the woods and know they have your back. It restores our faith in humanity again. :) That's a good thing.

Your hiking plan seems reasonable. I think you should work towards making that happen sooner rather than later.

I'll be thinking of you HB with your work tension. I'm hoping that will pass soon.... *hugs*

I'm no expert, but, I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Boots: Something comfortable cuz they will be staying on your feet all day. When I'm on the AT I like something with a non-skid tread so you don't slip on the hard packed slightly wet mud (although it's fun when you do and you don't fall down. It's like skiing). The treads also help when you're rock hopping. Nothing ruins your hike like a broken leg.

Rain jacket: It's important to have a rain jacket if you are a SAH (slow ass hiker) cuz you are likely to get caught in the rain. I like a hooded wind proof waterproof shell that can be crunched up and fit in a cup that is attached to the outside of the pack. The cup can come in handy when you are panhandling. The rain jacket is the most important piece of gear I carry. It has saved me many a time from dying from exposure.

Cement boots would wear out pretty quickly. Cement easily abrades and crumbles with rubbing on rocks etc.
When I was out to a hut on the Bib the other day there was a register entry for a bloke hiking the whole 600 miles and he had down that it was going to take him 75 days. I think that qualifies as slow, especially on a trail with maximum elavation of 1909 feet.

No - the boots are poured around your feet using a form (usually a bucket) by helpful assistants with names like Luigi and Marco. I understand in many cases it’s a complimentary service that they’ll perform at short notice, for free!
