sand bags arent going to help us here. im home now, but im heading up to my dealership after dinner, stay there for the next few days. we've just spent millions renovating the place so with power ill be comfortable, without it, ill still be comfortable, weve got a full kitchen and a shower, tvs etc. and pepe has a place to run around undisturbed.
theyve now ordered mandatory evacuations.
its gonna get real interesting.

sorry bud but its a lot of wind over a long period of time combined with a storm surge and a full moon high tide. with southeast to east winds pushing water into the bays and li sound, unless something drastic changes, this is the storm of the century for nyers.the beach met the bay in long beach in just 2 spots with irenewhich blew through quickly. anotherfoot and the entire island would have been underwater. this surge is expected to be 2-3 ft higher.we know were getting flooded. the question will be how soon the water subsides so we can go back home to start the cleanup

Yeah, this is looking quite serious. I've got the yard cleaned up and everything put inside or tied down. Everyone in the neighborhood pulled their boats and docks out of the water yesterday.

They're in the process of lowering the water level on the dam above me, and hopefully the dam the operates my lake will start to lower the water level today or tomorrow.

We're probably staying put, but it depends on the water levels and amount of rainfall they get upriver. We're just lucky that we don't have to worry about storm surge.

most people are taking the storm very seriously, there will always be some diehard holdouts that just wont leave their home. ive lived at the shore for 30 years and we've survived storm after storm, and you get lulled into thinking itll just blow through. but irene was a wake up call, we knew last year how lucky we were. we're just hoping to be luckier this time. i expect most will heed the warning, but the potential loss of property could be devastating

Some folks are just going to be stubborn about leaving no matter what. At least now people aren't entirely forced to make a decision to leave, or stay in harm's way, because they have nowhere to take their pets. Communities are now supposed to have at least a rudimentary plan in place for pet evacuations in their disaster / emergency response planning. That was one of the few good things that came out of Katrina. It inspired me to become a certified disaster responder for our local animal shelter.

I'm sure this information has already been widely published, but here's a link to local resources, if you'd like to share it:

Inwood got evacuated, it's right on Jamaica Bay and Reynolds Channel. My people didn't go. My stepfather and aunt were there in '38, and they say that they've already lived through the worst case scenario. My daughter's hunkered down with a friend in Levittown, because Molloy College got evacuated. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over? It's right on the parkway, and shares a power system with Mercy Hospital! It's a perfect place to shelter-in-place. No accounting for The Authorities.

Where are you? The only dealerships I can remember in Little Neck/Douglaston are in a strip on Northern Boulevard by Alley Pond - and that's awfully low lying, the parkway interchange there is always getting flooded. They say the flooding is supposed to be even worse on the North Shore.

I usually have a 37 mile commute to work (most of it on I-95 in southern Fairfield county). Tomorrow I'm instead going in for a partial day our backup center which is five miles from my house.

The only thing that I am going to miss about it is that my desk is on the 10th floor of an office building with an unobstructed view of Long Island Sound. It would have been very cool to watch the storm from there.

cool thing is, everything important to me is in my car. i dont own a home, left behind my tv, audio system, some clothes, not much else. my guitar and hiking gear are all with me. one great byproduct of backpacking is finding out how little you really need to be happy.so i dont have the same worries as the homeowners that know theyre coming back to a massive cleanup.not just here on the island but a lot of areas upstate are just now beginning to recover and theyre going to see a s***load of rain and wind over the next few days.

My house is on the Housatonic river in a small neighborhood, we lose power several times a year, usually for several days at a time. You jet get used to it. I have one of those car battery jump packs that also has a 12 volt DC power outlet. That lets me charge my phone and iPad. That, a wood stove and plenty of candles is all I really need.

One of the great things about losing power is that it causes me to go to sleep shortly after dark, it's a nice change from my usual night owl tendancies.

Ta Dah! I am back. Safe and sound. Only stuff is spinning around my yard. I had a wonderful walk this weekend....triathalon actually.Friday afternoon I dumped my Mt. Bike at Patterson road, north side of Mt. greylock. I then drove down and parked at the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail. From Cheshire I walked up to Mark Noepel Shelter [1 hr. walking in the dark], which was actually cool by moonlite until the cloudes moved in and I needed my headlamp, that sucked!Good walk Saturday up to the Monument, but no view, clouds and wind. I ate lunch in the ski hut. Down to Wilbur Clearing and put the hooch up on a platform. Sunday morning, 2 miles DOWN to my bike. 6 miles on the road to Adams and picked up the Rail trail and 5 more of smooth sailing to the Fish Car. 2 hr. drive back to Northford Rink and Ref 2 hockey games! I returned to Old Saybrook to find big signs telling of a mandatory evac south of route 1...........we are 100 yards from route 1.....and they want us to evac to the High School which is 200 yards further west!??! We are staying put. For now I can still brew coffe, but I do have some VIA left and some rations left.

HB: Interesting that the forecast for rain is decreasing for you as the storm nears. But that sucker's getting stronger and moving slowly - not a good combination - and the surge looks to be fearsome on the coastline for you, the city, Jersey, us, Mass and RI, down as far as the DELMARVA peninsula. I hope and pray Sandy is merciful but am expecting a rough ride for y'all. I hope, selfishly, that we don't lost power for the third time in a year. :(

Chris, come on down to Saybrook....you can run along the seawall!

Just went for an extended jaunt in the neighborhood. Stopped by and saw a friend hadn't seen in a while. Then over to another friend I see more often, and his fam. He and I walked about 3 miles first westward then over to and through Elizabeth Park, then back to his home. I got a couple gulps of water, then made my way back home, stopping to help a friend I ran into who was clearing some storm drains of leaves.

The weather's not terrible here. Occasional moderate rain, spritz most of the time, sometimes none. Wind also variable. It's just now starting to get to where the gusts are higher at tree top level, maybe 40 mph gusts, but the wind is not sustained at ground level. Worst gusts on the ground are maybe 15 mph. So far, the tree damage is minimal - wind taking down high hangers left over from last year's storms.

I think our shoreline, as I said before, is gonna get slammed, but b/c of the path the storm is taking, it looks like we, inland, won't be hit too hard. I'd guess maybe 30-40% power outage in this area, not 80+ like we dealt with last year. Not that that's a good thing, but it's not as bad as last year, fingers crossed.

I'm home early from work (gastro - ugh).
Watchng live crosses on my TV news and "surfing" for pics updates etc.
All roads tunnels etc to Long Island reported closed.
NYC is reporting 5 fatalities (that has not changed for a couple of hours) and New Jersey 2 (tree fell on car) and 3 "elsewhere".
Rain and winds in NYC easing, but storm surge has been as high as predicted if not slightly higher.
Summation for NYC area appears to be that most of the "damage" has now occurred (from winds etc) but the flooding issues will mean that residual problems and cleanup will be at the top end of expectations. No one is going to be sure of much until dawn.
Thinking of you all.

well over 60 mph... but we lost all the dangerous trees last year... about $3000 in clean up... We are fine... I went round and chain sawed two months ago a few and reduced the branches around the wires going out to the road...

I then have large tupperware and gallon containers filled with water to make solid blocks of ice and transfer from freezers to refrigerators. Fill the bathtub if you have a well etc,,,

We have Car Battery Backup (300w Inverter) for 1 32" HDTV and Internet, if the Vios goes down I can go back to Antenna and run the TV for several hours and one CFL Bulb here in the office. I can charge phones off the same Battery.

I also have a 2000 watt generator with a European car muffler on it... its huge and reasonably quiet. Runs most of the house. Keeps the two Refrigerators and 1 freezer going ...

I am not a prepper - but a firm believer in self reliance.

This storm showed our state did a fantastic job - locally they opened West Chester University to handle 1000 people from NJ evacuee's. The news crews and state of emergency edicts worked well. People got the message. Yes this is our Katrina.

But I think NYC got the worst of it.

I am sure with more area attention to emergency preparedness for obvious reasons and better cooperation between government and local agencies had paid off. A positive from this disaster though will be even better planning for natural disasters in the future as well as finding problems that were not thought of like tunnel flooding issues and the need for burying the power lines when possible.

Since 2000 NYC upped its disaster planning and was featured by Discovery in 2005? The biggest problem is all the transformers are under ground in Manhattan. And now they are underwater. Locally we have a Philadelphia Hospital that was flooded in the transformer room and the phone room - it never recovered from this years ago.

it is difficult to plan for everything. we didnt plan for jetplanes flying into the towers either. this was literally the storm of the century. dont think theres much they can do when subway tunnels flood, holland and lincoln tunnels flood and two rivers converge on the freedom tower.truly remarkable. nyc is 20 stories deep underground. you have no idea the infrastructure that exists below the streets of manhattan.

In lower level areas it shows the need for a comprehensive flooding plan to divert surface water or to pump water to keep underground structures sound. We locally had a drainage field...literally a field excavated filled in with large boulders, drainage pipes leading to and pump tubes that was covered over and turned into a park with a baseball diamond over it....you would never know that this drainage field was under the baseball diamond.

and thats just my story. there are countless others that have lost everything. i am thankful for the work of our first responders to did an incredible job with rescues, putting out fires in waist deep water, and its miraculous we did not suffer greater loss of life, maybe the only bright spot on this dark dark day. theyre now concerned with looting tonight, as theres going to be some desparate people out there.

I'm so glad you got to talk directly to your daughter. I know you must be even more thankful everyone is OK after hearing about the loss of their property. I pray they will get together a good plan of what to do next.... it's so tough to think clearly in these situations.

We wil continue to pray for the situation. It's heartbreaking and a mess!!

After everyone gets over the shock of it all, new hope will spring up. Look for the good in people that will start to emerge from this devestation.

I know it all looks lost & overwhelming, right now. It IS!!! The sun will come out again, buddy... I know you know that...

yeah i know most people are still in shock, its still hard to comprehend.we've never seen anything remotely close to this before. but people do pull together, we're a resilient bunch and we'll recover but right now, noone knows what to do, where to go, and no way to communicate.

we're going to need a bit of luck with the weather for the next few months. the beach is gone, dunes all washed away, the boardwalk is all torn up and the high tide is still coming in from the ocean and the bay, theres is nothing left to protect against another major storm, and we've still got 2 more high tide cycles before we're completely out of the woods with flooding, but the waters have subsided earlier today, think the worst is over.
we'll rebuild, itll get better day by day, and i still marvel at the minimal loss of life. almost miraculous. so yes, theres always a good side.

I was down to the New Haven area this evening. My friend in a town next door to N.H. had a very big pine tree break in half Mon night and crash into the roof of her 240 year old home. Damage was significant, but not devastating, already repair is in process. She has no landline, cable or electric, but is staying at the home for now, hoping the utils come back before it gets too cold. I was glad to see she's OK and relieved the damage was not worse.

Lots of power outage in New Haven and surrounding towns. Not as bad in Waterbury and Hartford areas. The shoreline took a big hit, but HB and fellow New Yorkers and neighbors in New Jersey took the worst of it. Recovery is a mighty big job. This will be second only to Katrina in magnitude of natural disaster event. What a huge storm Sandy was!

I'm not suggesting anyone laugh about them.
That would be an offense to each one of those that died as well as to millions that have had varying degrees of suffering.
But the world keeps turning. I am keen to know that people I know on WB like HB are okay and I wish I could go and help physically but I can't.
The cafe I am sure will all want to know progress of repairs to property and lives and I am sure we will get them.
But the theme in here is lighthearted and people like HB should be able to come here knowing that but the last couple of pages started getting a bit vitriolic.
I hoped to remind people to lighten up on each other.
Sandy caused serious s(poop)t.

its allgood.
no nothing to laugh about right now, but ive maintained my sense of humor, so if you keep it light, its all good. im hoping to hear from my family again to see if i can get down thre to help them. they have no power, no heat, no water, cars are all gone, and i dont even know what they need or if i can even get to them.yesterday people were still in shock regarding the enormity of the damage. today reality sets in.cell service is still spotty at best. ill keep you posted, but believe me, humor helps .its miraculous there wasnt more loss of life, im thenkful that my family is alive and okay for now. today we deal with what to do next,
time to roll up our sleeves.
thanks for the support guys.

just spoke to my daughter, everyones okay, they are safe at my daughters house in point lookout, just east of long beach. they have hot water and gas for cooking , keyspan said theyll have power back sooner rather than late, they have plenty of food and blankets and their step fathers truck is still working somewhat.
so they are safe and sound for now.now i need to hear from my landlady see when i can get back to my place.
long beach is a war zone, its gonna take a while to recover.
everyone safe.its all good.
