I've been thinking about this very thing. I'm not going to 'Thru', but I have got this wild hair about the AT back and I'm not sure how long it will last. In '97' I got hooked on Fly Fishing. I was obsessed, I fished every blue ribbon stream i could find. I haven't fished since April, but I've walked about 150 miles in many small pieces. And 32 years of Ice Hockey is getting old. I will need a walker before I golf! So, what next....sailing, Sea Kayaking, crocheting, Bridge-club????

Hey I have a brilliant idea, How about we get the Mods to create a "lounge" for HB' Cafe! You don't see the thread unless you join and its off limits to bots. For those that join there's no difference - You can invite someone to join and folks that are not joined cant see the threads. Just like Members only or Sensitive topics area.

Got my REI member card today (joined when I bought Daniels sleeping bag).

May buy up big just before I return to Oz after finishing trail.:D

I'm constantly looking at REI, CampMor, LLBean, SteepandCheap, Backcountry and WhiteBlaze online for lighter gear. I can't stop. I don't want to stop. I don't need to stop. You can't make me stop.

Unless you're a mud puddle.

Maybe some pickled Blubber too!
Sour pickled whale blubber – súr hvalrengi
Chunks of whale blubber are washed under cold running water and cooked until firm, then removed from the cooking liquid, cooled and kept in cold water for 1-2 days, cut into smaller pieces and dropped into strong whey. Ready for eating in 4-6 weeks.

Wild Turkey 101. 80 proof is for well drinks. It's also dual purpose as it can be used as a fire starter although I have never had to resort to such drastic measures.

I don't drink hard liquor. Only really like wine. Drank a bottle of Jaegermister once.

nothing made me laugh more than when coach lou came up to hike with me in maine past august, and the second night out(yeah, the second night out) he pulls two styrofoam containers out of his pack, each with a healthy slice of mississippi mud cake.now ill grant you it was a bit wet the first night(in which he pulled out his pots and pans and brewed a great stew), but that he actually waited and carried it another day. it was just after i had accidentally erased all my trip pics from my new camera.
man that was some good cake.
i do enjoy a few comforts on the trail. if it was some sort of contest, i doubt im interested in finishing first. ill leave the overachieving to the over achievers

I haven't had a drink of alcohol for about 15 months.
Saving myself for the AT.
Food is actually a bit incidental.
I figured not drinking for a while probably means I'll be a cheap drunk when I get there.

OzJacko
11-16-2012, 08:48
To clarify - food being incidental is because I tend to have an attitude of stuff in some light stuff to stop the stomach growling and save the culinary experiences for town stops. I am not likely to carry gear to make fancy meals. If I wasn't a big fan of a hot drink on a cold day I could probably become one of those "stoveless" types.:p

I haven't planned on abstinence.
Just found myself drinking less and less over the years and then when the doctors told me about 15 months ago that I should give up smoking and reduce alcohol consumption I had a problem. I've never smoked (never even tried it), and alcohol was down to a couple of beers every couple of months. So after I finished the Bib and set my sights on the AT I decided to not drink at all until I get to the USA. You guys have it a lot cheaper (like most things) anyway. I certainly intend to drink when the mood takes me when I get there.

One of the most common night outs I have with my wife (we don't have many) is a meal at either an Italian or a Chinese Restaurant.
My most common meals are veal parmigana (? spelling) or "spag bol" (aussie for bolognaise) and at the Chinese steak with black peppers (no mushrooms).
I am not adventurous in food but I love good tomato based pastas.
I generally get on well with Irish (mutual dislike of the English:) - it's an Australian tradition to "slag off" at the Poms) but there's one from Waterford that I'd like moved from my daughters place back to Ireland...;)

Oh, so you saunter through the Whites? :)

I don't understand running through the Whites. Way too beautiful...I found myself stopping often just to admire my surroundings. Then again, I am one of those hikers who just wants to be outdoors. If I feel like making miles, I will hike fast. If I feel like just taking it slow, I'll slow my pace down. It's all good! It's just great to be able to get outside and enjoy nature.

Hi Rat!
From the journals and pics I have read the Whites is nearly everyone's highlight.
Apart from the need to have "safe" overnight options I certainly won't rush it.
Been reading one which referred to the notion of "neroing the north" after doing high mileage in the south. If visa restrictions aren't giving us stress I think we might look at this.;)

hikerboy57,

How does it all work?. Can people cut and run if they want to or do you have to rebuild in the same place?
Has there been any discussion, at whatever level, kitchen table, local pub, back alleyways, about a strategic withdrawal back from the ocean over the next 100 years or so? Or would that be like letting the terrorists win, whoever the terrorists are in this case? Fossil fuel burners like me? God? Just asking.

Too soon? When do we talk about this stuff, or whom?

hikerboy57
11-17-2012, 08:55
no it's not too soon to begin talking about it. unfortunately today I'm going to be too busy to post too much and can't really address it fully but it is an important question. how many homes and some towns will not be able to be rebuilt in Island Park this morning there is a meeting about how we can possibly raise houses. in Long Beach small businesses were wiped out some business owners may not be able to afford to rebuild again but if we had another storm like sandy hit us again in the next year it would be a lot worse than this time. and sooner or later another storm is coming I'll try and talk more about great questionthis when I can

Here's the most accurate vote count I've seen to date. Obama has surpassed Bush '04, while Romney's creeping up on McCain, hoping to pass 60M, as they continue to count paper ballots (provisionals, mail-ins, absentees, presidential-election-only), especially in CA, AZ, OR and WA.

Hey I'm back!
Great and horrible trip to farm!
Long day starting at 5:00am, and overnight we had made decision we have been postponing for last 3 months. Our aged cocker spaniel came with us.
When we got to farm I left my wife, Anne, at farm with others there for the open day and took dog to nearby country vet.
Suffice to say that I was late joining the others after returning and digging her grave (in 90 degree heat).
Very sad but the vet agreed that she was very close to going without help and we felt the last 4 weeks she was not having a good experience living.
Twice I pulled her out of our pool when she fell in while I was home and I dreaded finding her on the bottom after work one day.
Buried her in the dog graveyard (resident number 11 we worked out on the way home) at the farm.
So I have just got up to my first dogless day in over 25 years.:(

Yeah we discussed that on the trip back.
It actually frees us up to get out more.
She needed to be carried anything further than 200 yards and suffered from "seperation anxieties" when alone. This meant we couldn't go for walks together without feeling guilty the last year.
The problem is than between now and when I leave for Springer days cool enough to go for a bushwalk will be rare.
We do now intend to do a lot of longer evening walks and a couple of overnighters when the weather permits though.

Actually I do have a similar thing I can relate to.
My favourite biscuit all my life was made by a company here until about 15 years ago.
Then the company was taken over by Arnotts.
They had a similar biscuit (a basic cookie with a "mint smear" on one side coated with chocolate).
They dropped the smaller company's biscuit and continued with their own.
Problem is theirs uses dark chocolate and the other one was milk chocolate. Definitely not the same taste.:(
To me this was the loss of an old friend and I boycotted Arnotts as best as I could for many years.

Honest - I am on Mozilla Firefox with several windows open 2 are on WB - the third is on Photobucket the forth is on google images... all I typed was owl twinkies into google images. Find the one I want left click on it then right click copy image location. Then come back here and using a fresh quick reply click on the photo key and uncheck save on page every time - that way it is never stored at WB.
Very similar to myself...
I also save to hotmail drafts pics I find amusing and then if a thread comes up that a pic suits I copy it across and delete the draft.;)

Little known fact...
Coke is the highest selling soft drink in every country in the world except Scotland.
There they buy more Irn Bru than Coke.
If you haven't tried Irn Bru, don't worry.
If you don't naturally call a child a bairn or an Englishman a sassanach, you'll hate the vile stuff.

Nice short Greylock Range hike today. North from Pattinson Road to Notch Road, covering about 1.7 mostly steep new miles of A.T, plus another 0.2 or so which I'd covered before. As I got a late start, 2 pm, and it was gonna get dark soon, I opted to road walk rather than go back down the steeps to my car. Notch Road to Pattinson Road, about 3 miles on the road. Nice thing about the road is that there were a few good views northward to Glastenbury and Stratton. Those and the views from Prospect overlook were so-so, a little hazy in the area. On the crisp side, with some lingering traces of snow and some ice above 2350' or so.

That north end of the Greylock Range deserves its reputation - it's White Mountain steep and rocky for a good half mile or so. Very pretty trail.

I have now traversed the Greylock Range on the A.T., as well as the lower Taconics straddling the CT/MA border. Wanted to do Killington today, but got too late a start. It was pretty chilly today, too. Maybe we'll get a warm one next weekend? We'll see.

$1 per person via Paypal? with all his freinds - he could go silver!

Seeing some of us are missing - but will show up later.... its been reported that some folks are ass-packing or flattening Twinkies and sliding them into their buttocks to attract bears closer to the trail.... I motion rather smoothly that this practice has not gone UN-noticed by the scientific community and environmentalists! Now that Twinkies has been removed from shelves 2 million people are hording these and Little Debbie's and running nekkid thru the wood... some have escalated this unusual behavior and are dragging Tootsie Rolls wrapped in TP. The has to stop immediately! The bears are not coming closer to the trail - in fact they are confused and frightened by this new sight!

Going forward you all have to start slackpacking!http://files-cdn.formspring.me/photos/20121116/n50a708fa2be66_large.png

Took several breaks on the steeps. One last one near the top - got to saw a single-engine plane, down below, come in for a landing just as Coach called. He and I agreed, such a cool thing to look down on the world from a high perch you've earned, and especially cool to look down on a plane.

Hiker Mom: Greylock Range is one of my favorite places - six hikes there in about 26 months. One last treat on the drive home was to see the War Memorial beacon and the red lights of the WAMC radio tower shining up top of the mountain as I left Williamstown southward on Rt. 7.

PS: Anyone else ever eat at the Moonlight Diner on Rt. 2 in W'town? Good quality, decent low prices and a lot of Elvis songs. Tammy did a good job waiting on me - sweet lady. Steak, baked potato and a salad went down well and warmed me after the cool evening.

Oh, and I check on Google Earth - it's about 4 miles of road walk, which I covered in about an hour, about the same time I figure the trail would've taken. So much easier on the road than on trail, especially downhill, it's hardly work at all - was the safer option, as I'd seen only 5 hikers in 3 parties all day, including one couple and their greyhound just after I got off the phone with Lou. They were the last fellow trompers I saw all day.

PS: Do I have a reputation as a blabbermouth here, Andy? I've posted 1600-odd times in 800-odd days on this site. Don't post often, but try to post well when I do, now and then at some length, I'd admit. Anyhow, busy day ahead. Hope y'all enjoy yours.

Yep, and I enjoyed the whole trip. I often walk, sometimes for as much as 8 or 10 miles, on the streets of the relatively flat town I live in. Enjoy those trips, too. :) Would have enjoyed more time on trail Saturday, but a late start and an early sunset made the route I took the right one for me at the time. Really enjoyed the experience of the steep northern precincts of that pretty range. Lovely place - with the sunset-to-dusk views across Mt. Yes, I agree, but I have been reffing a long time....sometimes I smell a scrum coming and I award penalties..........I call it 'house keeping'

Played Hockey in one form or another since I was 6... That's funny now but I deff got alot of "house keeping" calls back in the day... BTW Nick Fotiu was my fav growing up ... Go figure...

Hi Oz,
I've only been on WB a few minutes daily for the last 4 or 5 days. Looks like I missed some important stuff. I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. I've lost 3 in as many years and I still miss each of them. Cherish your memories (((hugs)))

I was playing nice, Doggone it! It was a very nice hike - don't those always put ya it a good mood for a few days after? Especially the ones where you complete a project, like the Greylock traverse.

Not to be mean, or anything, maybe Jake just wants a hug, since we're good for that around here. Here's one: (((Jake))). I don't bear ya any ill will, Jake, just have that business which I've already said plenty about. Wouldn't be thrilled if someone came around talking about the tons of money they had, either, when many others don't. We all love hiking and climbing around here, both in cafe and out. Plenty in common for the good. :)

Which argument is on the menu today?

Maybe a discussion about the meaning of it all or if Howard is being eaten?

I can't believe Jake got moderated out of the speed hiking foruum.thats just wrong. although I'm not a speed hiker or ul, I still have learned new things from him. if you would just learn to stop arguing so much he would be a very valuable contributor.

And in the olive branch vein: Jake, again in earnest, I would enjoy hearing about some of your rock climbing adventures. I am a wannabe rock climber, have done some good scrambles and want to build up to real live cliff work. Some of the cool walls you've done and people you've climbed with would be fun to hear about.

And hint: telling about such adventures is totally acceptable bragging, bragging which will get lots of pats on the back and attaboys, from me and many others, I'm sure. Some of the fellow Cafe folk have quite a bit of rock experience themselves and would, I'm sure, enjoy comparing notes, stories and insights with you. I'd enjoy listening and learning and, curious sort that I am, asking lots of questions. Come on in if you like, the water's fine.
