Just found time to look at some of your recent pics HB.
Some nice shots.
It all looks a bit eerie to me though as I have only known evergreen forests so masses of trees without leaves all looks very dead to me.
Often beautiful but still dead.:p
I take it those were wild turkeys crossing the road in the Harriman shots?? yes there is certainly an eeire beauty to our winter woods.what makes the change of seasons so amazing in the spring when all those dead looking trees green up and come roaring back to life.well, its just all good

"Walking With Spring"!... So looking forward to it.
I have 77 days until I leave work, about 17 more before flying out.

Just about to push all the buy buttons in next week or so.
Surprisingly after dumping the idea of the round the world ticket and opting for a direct USA and return trip, I still look like coming in from the east.
Best tickets we are looking at are with Qatar Airlines and are to New York via Dohar. Then internal USA flight to Atlanta.

You win!....

when i was married we had season tickets for the NY philharmonic. we went to see them perform during a snowstorm with about 4 or 5 inches of snow on the ground. erich leinsdorf was the featured conductor and Kathllen battle(a soprano with the voice of an angel) was the featured opener, singing 4 last songs by richard strauss. leinsdorf thanked the few hundred people that showed up for coming, invited everone to move down closer,he took the piano and accompanied Kathleen Battle for 4 more songs by strauss. after intermission, he conducted an incredibly bright pastorale symphony. it was one of the most magical concerts i have ever attended. with snow falling outside and just a few hundred people at avery fisher hall witnessing something rather special. leinsdorf had not played the piano publicly for over 10 years.
next would be springsteen at the bottom line in 75.

That's the wind chill.
Winds under 40mph.
Just a faint zephyr of a breeze....

I'm sure I will be sick of it after 6 months but I'm looking forward to the cold.
It's the heat of July that puts me off most in my anticipation.
I expect I will "train" often for the half gallon challenge.

All I can say is you lucky b......
I've never been a great clasical follower but my parents did - particularly dad so I heard a bit growing up.
Have recently started to appreciate it far more.

I like quite a variety of music but I have noticed a common thread in that nearly everything I like was written by the performer.
Means Elvis for example doesn't figure highly but Elton John and Cat Stevens do.

I have my own beliefs as to what is going/went wrong, it's very much tied 2 my world view + beliefs. God is willing to "help us". His "help" doesn't come in a way that seems "logical" to us but it does makes sense ,to me, for now.

None of us are safe anywhere.... If a family can clearly tell there is something "bothering/wrong" ( even dangerous) with another family member- hands are tied as far as getting them help, until they harm themselves or others. What is wrong with this picture?

I love you all 2... you never know what day may be your last -it's true.

I don't think I feel safe everywhere. Sometimes people's lives end because of someone else's issues or problems. That's what makes this world unsafe in my opinion. There's no where you can go to "hide" from that. That shouldn't happen but it does.

Accidents, disease etc... are one thing but loosing your life at the hands of another human being takes it to another level.

Rasty- no offense taken with your comment.

mom, there are plenty of ways to die, no reason to be afraid.hrricabes tornadoes, earthquakes, drunken drivers, a truck with bad brakes. a car flying through your living room window, terrorists, gunmen. makes no difference. death is death.
i accept the inevitability of my own demise.
life is short.live each day as if it were your last.
carpe diem.

did i tell you i love you?

HikerMom58
12-14-2012, 19:18
Yes, you did tell me that you love me and I love you too. :) Not feeling safe and living in fear are separate things, in my mind. I don't fear death but I'm fearful of how I will die. I live with a certain amount of fear everyday but I don't let that fear ruin my quality of daily life. I don't make decisions based on my fears. My levels of fear change daily. Some days I feel less fearful than others. If I have to get on a plane or pick up a strange hiker my fear levels go up but it doesn't stop me from doing either &, so far, both things have been a source of joy/fun for me. ;)

I do love you 2........just want you to know. :) Thanks for being my friend. :)

hikerboy57
12-14-2012, 20:25
nothing wrong with fear. its instinctive and helps keep us alive.its not so much about fear. more about how fragile life really is. what i fear is not dying happy. when i got divorced i was a stockbroker. ran into one of my high school buddies who i hadnt seen in quite a few years, and when i told him what i did for a living he laughed. he asked"werent you a communist in high school?"no i wasnt a communist but was antimaterialism and never really was the guy with the nicest car. i just wanted to live life to the fullest.
well a few days later i went into work and at 7:30 in the morning i realized how miserable i really was, and i thought"if i should die tomorrow, i would die miserable."i walked into my managers office and resigned.didnt have any idea what i wanted to do, but i knew i would not die miserable.
dont die miserable. do the things you want to do, the things that really turn you on.tell everyone you love that you do.make amends. dont wait for the other person to call first.
( iam not implying by the way that you are either miserable ornot living life fully)
you never know when its your last day
todays events are horrific and unimaginable.my heart goes out to the families and i pray for those tiny little souls

I have a 7 year old daughter - - she's running around the house laughing and won't go to bed and arguing with her mom about taking a bath - - not sure what to think - -she goes to a great school that she loves dearly (1st grader) - ideas on what to tell her - - if you ever see anyone at your school with a gun, run as far away as you can - the woods, across the road, where ever - just get out? should I say anything at all?

on a lighter note, I always feel so very safe on the trail - - when she is a teenager, I'd be delighted for her to go solo backpacking for some weekends (for starters) like I did - - - much, much safer than a mall IMO

I just heard that it is best not to say anything unless they ask questions. I would hope that they cover safety issues in school like fire drills etc....I guess now they need to add- what to do if you see someone with a gun... that's sad!!

I don't feel any safer on the trail than any other place. I don't feel completely safe in my home... that's why we have locks on our doors. I don't live in fear but I realize anything unforeseen can happen anytime. If I had to choose a place I feel the least safe that would prob. be in my car, driving down the road.

yeah - good advice - I'm not going to say anything to her now - - might have some general discussion about being aware and alert some time. once upon a time (long ago) I was selling Christmas trees and someone pointed a gun at me - I just ran and ran (with a pocket full of money too - I was 17 - the year before my thru-hike and probably had my whole thru hike bankroll on me - maybe $2000 cash (really)) - I ran fast - never turned back and never got shot at.

not to politicize things here (not the place) but I think we need to do something about guns in this country (not prohibiting them) but we need to make them harder to own. It's very legal to fly your own airplane but no one disputes that you have to have a license (and sometimes a special license (instrument rating) - - I thing that guns are more dangerous than airplanes.

I can't imagine they will play the game. I don't think I can be there and have fun with those kids knowing the pain they have. Why does this keep happening today? Clearly this young man was sick, a sane person could not think of such a thing.:(

not to politicize things here (not the place) but I think we need to do something about guns in this country (not prohibiting them) but we need to make them harder to own. It's very legal to fly your own airplane but no one disputes that you have to have a license (and sometimes a special license (instrument rating) - - I thing that guns are more dangerous than airplanes.

Well ya are, no foul and it's only a few hours after the fact - and as a parent - right now the emotions are high. I don't own one, don't care if good people feel the need to own one... Saw once again the press do their dirty deed for the last 4 hours at asking horrible/thoughtless questions and bring in so called "retired experts" - This isn't the time to talk about weapons. - This is a time to talk about family our kids and our community.

This is a sad moment, there isn't an explanation, It's best to turn on a movie or enjoy a campfire and be thankful to have family and freinds.... Do yourself and others a favor, change the channel...

I just watched a guy tonight who I know who is a truck driver. He is a great guy and a great dad. Up to now nobody had an minor issue with him. He ask politely, then after while asked the bartender again, and then after 15 minutes blew up "CHANGE THE CHANNEL OR NO GOD DAMN TIP BITCH!" - yep they tossed him, then changed the channel...It was a sports restaurant....not a bar.

Don't forget the guy that flew his private plane into an IRS building a few years back.

I have a granddaughter and right now I am thankful for the gifts in my life no matter how small they are.

My daughter seems to love them so I let her watch a bit - we don't "do" TV - she watches about 1 hour a week on you-tube but I prefer her to be outside playing in the yard, digging up dirt, collecting rocks, making art, hammering nails into wood in my shop, helping me fix my wood fired hot tub- working on the jeep - that sort of thing - - FWIW, I've never heard of Spongebob or Ren and Stimpi - I'm a backcountry hiker, a redneck-democrat liberal - when I'm in the front-country, I still read - I'm one of the few people that read my Norton's anthology of English Literature (from college) cover to cover spongebob just doesn't compute yet - I'm only now absorbing the Simpsons

yeah - what do you suggest I do about that? I'm hiking the AT (again) because I like the woods and woods person ship - I really do live the life - I can't help it. I have an green Amex card but other than that I have no credit cards, I have no debt (own the little 1800 s/f house for cash) - I drive a '04 Subaru (paid for) - I have a few bucks in the bank but not super rich (less than 100K) - I have my '01 Nissan Pickup that I used to live in and I have a 1955 Jeep Willys that runs but is a project. I'm still a vegetarian (since the late '80s) - I do send my daughter to private school which costs about 20% of my income (stupid? she loves it). My wife and I work hard (and play hard) but I'm totally a throwback - not sure if its a bad thing - we certainly don't pay a TV bill or make a house payment.

This is the article I was sending around the office in an effort to cheer people up:

Santa Claus Pictures: Mall Santa Becomes Man's Father-In-Law

When Chris Burd of Minnesota sat on Santa's lap in 1998, he never thought he'd see that white-bearded man again. But 13 years later, Burd realized that that same Santa had become his father-in-law.
Chris' mother, Charlene Burd, made the discovery last year while sifting through old photos. Chris had just gotten engaged to Liz Abbas, whose father, Elmer Abbas, had been dressing up as Santa for 20 years. Charlene realized that the Santa Chris and his three-year-old sister were sitting with in one photo looked exactly like Elmer (Chris was 13 at the time and posing with Santa for his sister's sake).
"I just told her she's nuts. So later in the week I went over to the house and saw [the photo] and decided it wasn't him," Chris told ABCNews.com (http://gma.yahoo.com/blogs/abc-blogs/boy-sits-santas-lap-realizes-father-law-15-232311520--abc-news-topstories.html). "But later on, I took a closer look and was like, 'Oh my God. That's Liz's dad."
Liz and Chris displayed the photo, along with Liz's 1998 Santa photo with Elmer, at their wedding in September. Chris said it was "creepy" to realize he had met his father-in-law 13 years earlier, but he and Elmer have enjoyed joking about the coincidence.
"It was fun to tease my future son-in-law about sitting in his father-in-law's lap. And I think I probably made up a couple of stories about what he wanted for Christmas," Elmer said.

1 - 3.5 oz pkg Cook and Serve Chocolate Pudding mix
2/3 cup nonfat dry milk
1 ounce Just Raspberries (1 cup)(available at Lori's Natural Foods, etc.)
2 cups water added on the trail

At home:
Each item can be carried separately or the pudding and the milk can be combined in a quart-sized freezer bag, with the raspberries carried separately.

On the trail:
Stir dry milk and pudding mix into two cups water in a pot. Heat until the mixture comes to a full boil, stirring CONSTANTLY. It is helpful to have a heat disperser to minimize scorching.
Divide the raspberries between zipper-lock bags or other serving containers. Pour the cooked pudding over the raspberries.
Serve warm or cold. If not eaten immediately, cover to prevent a crust from forming.
Makes 2-3 servings. 7 oz and 720 calories total

Easy recipe for hiker prom. Always got great reviews even when not hiking.

where the heck did water rat go? just as we started to get some momentum

I'm here! I'm here! Got buried under a mound of "stuff that must be done before Christmas" and then got caught up in talking to my cousin's kids (who are more like a niece and nephew to me). They are 6 and 11 and wanted to talk about what happened in Connecticut. They decided to talk to me because I live near Connecticut (I am sooo getting them a couple of atlases for Christmas!). They did most of the talking...I mostly just listened. Kids are (thankfully) pretty resilient, but it sucks that they even have things like this to worry about.

By the end of the conversation, they were trying to weasel info out of me about their Christmas presents. I take that to mean I said the right things and calmed their fears for now. It was so awesome to hear their giggles. One of the best sounds in the world! :)

Who else gets to spend the weekend doing holiday cards, shopping, wrapping, baking...? Time to whip out National Lampoo's Christmas Vacation and watch the squirrel leap from the tree! Might as well make this as painless as possible. Maybe I will deviate from the Christmas shopping and spend at least a little time in the outdoor stores, drooling over gear possibilities...

Hey HB we saw these guys in summer of 73 about 60 miles from you in Newburg in an airplane hanger. Saw the Stones there too rehearsing their show for Madison Square Gardens. Not a lot of people new about it. We only did because one of our friends worked there. There was about 1500 people there if that. One of my best memories ever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQVe9KkK-B0 The Dolls were an actually paid for concert at night. The Stones were another time during the day, but it was free.

Sounds Yummy-Thanks for sharing MM!

Also, under that same setting page... how is it that you can choose to let a mod or admin send you a PM? I just happen to notice that the box wasn't checked for me to allow that... whoa.. Gotta get off of here now but just wanted to add... Woo... that dedication is touching. Thanks!

My hubby just talked to a local elementary teacher about his thoughts on the latest school shooting. Hubby said that schools are so much different now than when our kids were in school. Most all of them have buzz in entry systems. But, they don't really work well. They have unannounced "school shooting drills". The teachers know ahead of time but the kids don't realize that it's not real. People come in with fake guns and plastic bullets apparently.
One really disturbing aspect of this "plan" is, when schools go into "lock down", the teachers are trained to look out in the halls and pull any kids they see into their classroom. Then, they lock the door and have the kids go to a "safe place", in the room. Under no circumstances, do they open the door even if they hear a knock. What if it was a child left outside the classroom for some reason? They practice hearing knocks on the door but not responding to the knock. That can be good or bad thing. I can't imagine what a child would feel having to practice one of these drills. Necessary evil!!! :(

Hikermom Iforgot to add - once you make a change you must scroll to the bottom and "Save Changes"

as disturbing as 8920 post is... it's nothing new, Ask your older friends about duck and cover! In Hawaii they still have practice drills near the base.

Before I switched off all the house tv's last night - there was a gem of truth that came thru from an active police officer "there isn't a defense for the lone assassin" - in short what you are describing is doing something in the face of doing nothing... Just as duck and cover would not work, just as having the TSA doing it's inspections, so is the drill you are describing....ask any pilot what they think of the TSA. Ask any teacher the reality of the drill... I used to sell the buzz in systems and prox cards for ADT.

It was actually. The airline lost my uniforms on my way to Japan. It took 1 month for them to get me new uniforms so I could travel. Sawed it down, strapped 'er to the roof and paraded it around on the drive home honking the horn like a lunatic. Over 10 feet for $25 to the land owner. Got 'er mounted in the living room. Epic. Left no trace. Just a low stump and some saw dust.
