Haven't been to the Cafe for a while, thought I'd drop by while I sip on a bottle of magnesium citrate at 8:30 in the morning, what a way to start the day. I finally gave in to the nagging wife and had a physical, passed with colors, now they want to check the plumbing, dont mind the snake too much but the crap you have to do the day before isn't fun. Can't eat anything but jello and clear liquids, not normally not a vodka person but it's clear, the wife was kind enough to make a batch of jello shots last night, I'll have those for lunch.

Yup, I saw that....if you were in "real" conversation that wouldn't have ever happened, obviously.... it becomes funny after a while. :P I also feel like it's easier to "say" things to people via the computer that you would NEVER say to their face. I know it's true for myself. I told WM, I didn't like him for his remark to me. (I would have NEVER said that to his face, upon meeting him) ( I would have still thought it but wouldn't have said it... there's a big difference) I should have told him- I resemble that remark... can you stray up to maine this august? party in monson 8/12

I plan to head that way in March, take up where I left off near Damascus and go as far as the knees allow, at least to Harper's Ferry, did the 76 mile Foothills Trail last week and no knee issues so that's a good sign, but for today I'll stay close to the throne.

Thanks, there's lots of reading up for me to do.
Does anyone ever really try this?!?
Here's an excerpt from the site:
Q18: What is a Presie Traverse? What is a Hut Traverse?
A18: A Presie Traverse is a dayhike, hitting all the peaks in the Presidential Range. That includes Madison, Adams, Jefferson, (Clay), Washington, Monroe, (Franklin), Eisenhower, Clinton, and some people include Jackson and Webster. Keep in mind, Jackson was named after the NH State Geologist, not the President. It's a long hard day, and many people who start don't finish. Most people do it north to south, but it can be done both ways.
A Hut Traverse is an even longer dayhike, hitting all eight AMC Huts in a 24 hour period. It usually starts at Carter Notch at midnight, heading out 19 Mile Brook, then up to Madison and on south. Huts are the objective, not summits, so most hearty souls avoid all the summits along the way if they can. It's close to 50 miles of difficult hiking, so only the best hikers with the best weather make it.

I hope that's not one of the options you guys had in mind when you said there were ways to minimize hut stays

The time I just went to kick back & clear my head there for a week I helped with helo drops for the composted privy. My friend showed up with a Wild Turkey resupply for the weekend & a guy that hiked in for the day to fish offered us the trout he caught. After frying the trout in way to much butter I used it to cook up some rice. Watching the lake turn a rainbow of colors as the sun set, fish feeding on bugs & a moose at the far end as we ate & sipped on our bourbon...PRICELESS.

Yeah but they tore down the 160' suspension bridge. While playing on the Long Trail this year I shared a campsite with a ridge runner & he told me FS decided it was unsafe & because inside wilderness boundry they decided to dismantle it. Before he worked for the GMC he helped haul out the pieces.

Never heard this before. Just added to my favorites. My daddy was born in Harlan, KY. My great granddaddy is buried in a cementary up in Jones Creek, which is a coal miners camp above Harlan. Thanks for this link. It means more than you'll ever know.

Darrell Scott is a great talent. glad you like him. i'll post a link to a radio show he did with his dad
I'd appreciate that. One of my uncles was crushed by a mine car. One fell off a trestle to his death. A lot were dying of black lung, 25 -26 years old. My daddy didn't want to go down in the mines, so everbody told him to follow the coal and go to Detroit. That's what he did and worked in the steel mill.

We haven't been up there in awhile, but for quite a few years we used to go up and paddle the fall release of the Russell Fork of the Levisa River, which is in the same general area (Pikeville, Breaks Interstate Park). It's still a beautiful area, even tho you can see the industry left its mark.

I have a very similar family background. My grandfather was a coal miner, and my dad and 5 brothers all worked some in the mines although the military and Detroit auto factories was their path out until they all ended up in Florida. Several uncles had black lung (including the ones married to my dad's sisters). My oldest uncle actually had own small indedpendent mine, until a shaft fell on him. He lived but was physically not same after that. It was a tough way to make a living back then.

It was a tough life but it was honest. If you wanted out of the mines the factories and the mills in Deetroit (that's what I call it, folks up that way don't take kindly to it, they say Datroit, always trying to correct me LOL) was the way to go. They really missed the hills but at least now they weren't dying in the mines. I still got a lot of kin in Monroe MI, about 30 mi south of Deetroit (LOL) and a lot ended up in Dogtown, AL up on Lookout Mountain where my granny's side of the family was from. I got over 115 relatives and some slaves (who were considered family) buried in one cemetery on that mountain and over 40 in another dating back to the 1830's. Sorry about the family history rambling but like you said it was a hard life but like I said it was honest and I know you're proud and so am I.
