If you were looking at getting from NYC to Atlanta, had 3 or 4 days to do it and didn't have a preference for one mode of transport over the other (as in no problems driving, don't mind trains, planes etc), would you fly, train, bus or take a hire car?? Just looking at it in terms of expense involved, I would say fly. Fares between NYC and ATL are generally reasonable since they're major cities. You'll get the best deal if you purchase your ticket at least 3 weeks in advance of your travel date. You'll have several airlines to choose from.
1. Hiring (d*mnit, now you've got me talking like you) I mean renting a car to go one-way is way more expensive than if you're returning it to the same location you rented it from.
2. That's a really long drive. I know you drive a truck for a living, so that doesn't bother you, and you could spread it out over several days, but you will be paying for gas on top of the car rental (see reason #1 above).
3. If you had some sightseeing in mind, the flying option could allow you to take in a little sightseeing on both the NYC and ATL ends and still get to Amicalola in time for your start date.
4. You might have time to hook up with Hikerboy in NY :D

Well, that's pretty typical results when asking for results from WB!
You got responses that told you to take all 3 options you were considering!
And in less than 3 minutes!

This is kind of thinking I can use.
$$ for this doesn't matter too much as lumped on top of two $2200 air tickets % difference is fairly minimal.
Re driving, I drive 300 mile before I consider it a long trip.;) I do 500 mile in a day no worries.
Between arrival at NYC (probably 16th or 17th) and arrival at Hiker Hostel (pm 20th) the only must do for us is organise cell phones or similar with Verizon, a trip to REI or similar for water treatment gear (probably one filter and AquaMira shared between the 2 of us - final decisions closer to the day) and a couple of odds and ends cheaper over there and first 4 days food and fuel purchase.
Sounds like a lot but if organised only a half day or so really.
The rest of the time is just looking and clearing any jet lag.

The only other thing I would say is Rasty is right, I-95 sucks, especially around the DC area.

I know Harry Chapin tells me it's a dog of a way to get around but how does Greyhound compare to Amtrak??

NYC to Atlanta two easy day drive for a trucker under 20 hrs. Depends on what you want to see. Lots to see in NYC as a tourist, then you could hop a train or bus to Washington DC & visit stuff there. Booked in advance planes are cheap & other than DC > NYC train is more expensive than flying. But I enjoyed my trip to GA & back due to awesome food & abilty to drink. Given that it is you & Daniel a car rental may work out if you research it enough. As TW said sometimes one ways are expensive. But I believe airport to airport is often a lot cheaper in my traveling experience. I believe you said you were going to hiker Hostel so if you picked up a car at NY airport & dropped in Atlanta might be cost efficient. Not hard to save $40-60 a night just to get outside city proper on hotel room alone.

What are you interested in seeing in these days. Museums, Caves, Natural wonders. My work & play has brought me up & down the corridor many times like I said. My gut would say drive may be cheapest & most enjoyable depending on what you want to see & if others here will be able to host you or shuttle you around some.

You can rent a sleeper car on Amtrak.
On Greyhound, your seatmate uses you as a pillow.:D

East corridor now pretty much has wifi & outlets on the buses but often full especially NYC to DC. New seats offer a little more room.

I did a sleeper on one secton hike to GA & loved it, but cost me as much as a flight from NE. Just wanted to try it. Food was great & two meals included.

Not to sure what we want to see but I like your thinking. It would make sense to think car getting me into "backwoods" a little bit would mean a lot cheaper accomodation than staying in NYC or Atlanta.
When we leave we fly out of NYC again so along with a possible couple of zeroes mid hike, I don't think I want to "sightsee" NYC on arrival.
Apart from shopping mentioned above no real need to be in metroplis versus small town.

Mountain Mike

I-81 would let you drive parallel to what you will be walking, & mostly in sight. Bus & train take you down I-95 corridor which is busy & congested & not all that pretty.

It would be nice to get a "feel" for the countryside we're going to be hiking through.
Get a mental map of the towns a bit.

Been years since I did it but it was close to $70 from DC to CT in tolls. The swing west around all the metro area added less than 100 miles, was non-stop as opposed to tolll boths & traffic & normally faster. Plus a lot less stress free on me, even though I did have to drive through NYC often enough to pick up product. It was all about knowing where the lanes run out & changes.

I have to go out for a while now (I'm a last minute Christmas shopper!), but I already feel like I am looking at either Amtrak or a drive the "longish" way from NYC airport to Atlanta airport.

Not That many. It was drive from show to show every weekend. With Easyrider it was two months in winter & two in the summer. Driving was the easy part, I was limited to 11 hrs a day. Maintaining it...I waxed mine every week & went as far as traceing out the wax from the vinyl with a toothpick! I was Ana* Compulsive about how my rig looked. My aluminum was always polished like a mirror, even the decking. At shows it was dusted with a quick wax every morning. Good enough wasn't up to my standards. At the big trade show with all the industry show rigs a guy that did marketing said page down....I had the best looking rig there!
It was set up & working the shows, then tear down that took it's toll. None of us logged show hours, other than set up & tear down because it would make us illegal at some trips. Summer rodeos where the worst, 17 hr days, tear down & head on to next weekend. To make ends meet I had to work different companies. At some points where shows met I would literally pack my bag from the rig & say I'm here & other boss would send a truck for me. At times it would go in reverse, done here, back to rig, see you in Daytona.
Spent many years on the road. Loved it at the time. Traveled all over this country & made friends along the way. For now I am retired from the road. Kinda nice to sleep in my own bed, have an address, not "a place I get mail at". I still get offers to do other shows & travel. Just going to pick & chose what I want to do & what works for the business.

PS I moved our web cam so you can see the town Christmas Tree from our store. If I miss any of you before then HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS OR WHAT EVER HOLIDAY YOU CELEBRATE!

The skull truck was what they kinda bribed me with to go on long term with them. I Named it "The Beast". Like I said I maintain it to highest standers. Had times when polishing my rims guys would think I was local & want me do theirs next. It was an old tractor, 92 Volvo with 500 cummings unrestricted. Pissed the Peterbuilt sworn driver to pieces when he couldn't keep up. Best times riding with the was riding in formation. Four rigs running down the highway. Boss said he could pretty much track us real time due to the calls he got saying how cool it was to see all the EZR rigs running down the road. I ran in front more that year, previous year front runner eyes sucked18547

I'm impressed in more ways than one.
They are very nice rigs and REAL trucks to boot.
I drive little "rigids".
I call them vans on steroids.
Only 6 ton jobs, but quite large as it takes a lot of linen to get 5 ton.
Been driving for about 6 years.
It's a job I took up to get about 30 years of office work out of my system.
Nowadays I walk away from phones that ring.:)

OK.....
Query for the WB experts when you wake up.
I often post pics picked up in my internet travels and "stored" in my hotmail drafts.
I copy the image from the draft and paste it into threads.
Usually works fine except for occasional instances of "Gray Blazer" disease.;)
When I try and post a pic from my own pictures on my computer it often tells me I can't because of upload limits.
It seems that while I have unlimited capacity to upload to my gallery, I only can load 1Mb as "attachments".
To upload a new "attachment" I have to delete an old one.
Any suggestions?

As a related issue I sometimes feel I would like to upload to my gallery "interesting" pics that don't fit the categories in WB.
Is there a way to upload to "My Images" without being in "Other Trails" or another category?

Thumbnail pics come from my hard drive: Click on the picture link (3rd box from left on tool bar) click on "from computer" then select the pic you want from your comp & upload it. If it already on the web say in you pis here or some other photo sharing website you right click on the pic, copy the pics location & paste the location in (CTL + V)
