I hopefully will not ever get 4' of fresh powder. I'm just thinking about it as I wan't to go snow camping and won't know if where I'm going is going to get 2" of 2' of snow. I only get to the mountains a few times each year and don't wan't to have to bail if the snow is over a foot.

The new MSR Snowshoes look incredible. I haven't been snowshoeing in twenty years but would like to start again. The last time I went we were using snowshoes that looked like plastic toy tennis racquets.

That's quite a load you have in that picture. That must have sucked!

St. Johns is much better. I pasted the GPS cordinates in earlier with the 18* 20'N 64* 43'W instead of 18° 20'N 64° 43'W and it came up at exit 141 on I-95 in South Carolina. About 30 miles east of Columbia. I figured it was family or something.

That's interesting. I started wandering around looking for more info on Ellis Island and look at the description I found on nyc-architecture.com:

"Upon entering the building, immigrants mounted stairs leading to the second-floor Great Hall which served as the waiting and processing room. A room impressive for its size- - 189 feet long and 102 feet wide with a 60-foot-high vaulted ceiling- -and the abundance of large windows in the east and west walls. The stairs leading to the Great Hall served as a medical treadmill. Doctors waited at the top to check the breathing, posture, gait, and general physical fitness of people as they made the climb. For many the stairs took on a special meaning, for those feeble from sickness or old age could be marked for rejection at that point."

That's just mean!

A lot of FS roads are closed in snow. The road to Tellico Gap is usually open. The Nantahalas are awesome in the snow (see my gallery). You can drive to the top of Camp Creek Bald. Do you have 4-wheel drive? Sometimes you can drive to Carver's Gap if the hard road is melted and cleared of snow. There is road access to Overmountain Shelter (about 1 mile from the shelter).

Camp Creek and Tellico are the best places to access the AT in the snow as far as parking close to the peaks. Good hammocking and tent camping on Rocky Bald.

Hey hiring a driver may not be a bad idea, since the steering wheel is on the "wrong side". I remember after living in Singapore and coming home to the US for Christmas and strugling with the steering wheel on the left at first, the worst part was that I kept hitting the windshield wipers when I meant to hit the turn signal.

If you've never been up the Silver River from the Ocklawaha, you're missing one of the major wonders of nature. Lots of good memories for me.

Sgt. Rock and LW convinced me to leave my water filter home. Usually the mnt springs are nice but my water source on that overnighter was the creek that flowed below the latrine on the hill. I'll never leave my filter again. (BTW-Katahdin pump filter).

Still going. My dad would freak me out cuz he'd be jockeying for position with the glass bottomed boats. Those commercial capt would be glaring at him. At 10 I did not realize that waterways weren't privately owned. There used to be a cypress tree near the Ocala Boat Basin that we could jump about 50 feet straight down into the Silver River.

Train Wreck - you need a theme song. How about this one. p.s. It's like a trail name, you don't have to accept it.

I like it, they sing about raggedy hobos and leaving (trail) towns, works for me!

That one really did send my Coke all over the keyboard!

Actually, I would probably get complimented by all the UL-ers for simplifying my gear:

White Blaze Burqas - The Tent You Can Wear!

You don't even need to take it off! just carry along a couple of clothes pins, pin it to some low lying branches, sink down inside, and you're done!

My turn to clean the keyboard. Iced tea everywhere.
