when i was married we subscribed to the ny philharmonic, used to go to lincoln center quite abit.ive seen wynton marsalis play both jazz and the classics, as well as andre watts, kathleen battle, bernstein, leinsdorf, itzhak perlman isaac stern countless others.best opera performance i saw was boris godonov performed by the kirov at the met. had parterre seats, next to some russians who kindly kept us on track with the plot.

cool, I grew up in Opera - my dad was a tenor in the Met - he was lead tenor in LaBoheme, Rigoletto, Die Zauberflöte (the Magic Flute) and others in several Met performances in the late 70s and early 80s - - he and one other guy founded the Atlanta Opera Company which I think went out of business in the 90s - - it was re-started in the early 2000s by different people - - anyway, as a teenager, I ended up knowing a lot about it and I'm still nostalgic for a few arias - - I can also still wear the tuxedo that my parents bought me (had made for me actually - it's fancy - buttonholes that work, a vest, etc) when I was 15 - - I'm exactly the same size -30 years later - I was a chubby 150 at 15 years old - - now, I'm a lean 150 at 45 - - it fits perfectly - - I have nowhere to wear it of course - - just to a silly party once in a while - - it's a shame - - i get it muddy - - I even have Italian leather slippers with silk bow ties on them - - for real

funny - - I've been known to sing (in italian, which I don't know) arias (that I can barely remember) while hiking in the heavy snow or driving sleet or in some other ridiculous situation - - it sort of calms me down - - I may be the only person in the world with various opera arias, Widespread Panic, Son Volt, and Ke$ha on my I-pod - - I run it all

Hehhehehehehe!

We have both been here long enough that there is a recurring question where folks put methanol in their various light weight containers and some put it in soda bottles. I don't have access to CDC statistics, but my estimation that some 60 -120 people die of Methanol poisoning each year. Which does not include those that survive but are blind. So I was looking it up.

Still Researching... Methanol has a high toxicity in humans. If as little as 10 mL of pure methanol is ingested, for example, it can break down into formic acid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formic_acid), which can cause permanent blindness (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blindness) by destruction of the optic nerve (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optic_nerve), and 30 mL is potentially fatal,[16] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methanol#cite_note-Vale-16) although the median lethal dose is typically 100 mL (4 fl oz) (i.e. 1–2 mL/kg of pure methanol[17] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methanol#cite_note-17)). Toxic effects take hours to start, and effective antidotes can often prevent permanent damage.[16] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methanol#cite_note-Vale-16) Because of its similarities in both appearance and odor to ethanol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethanol) (the alcohol in beverages), it is difficult to differentiate between the two (such is also the case with denatured alcohol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denatured_alcohol)).
Methanol is toxic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxic) by two mechanisms. First, methanol (whether it enters the body by ingestion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingestion), inhalation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inhalation), or absorption (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absorption_(chemistry)) through the skin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skin)) can be fatal due to its CNS depressant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CNS_depressant) properties in the same manner as ethanol poisoning (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethanol_poisoning). Second, in a process of toxication (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxication), it is metabolized (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metabolism) to formic acid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formic_acid) (which is present as the formate ion) via formaldehyde (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formaldehyde) in a process initiated by the enzyme (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enzyme) alcohol dehydrogenase (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_dehydrogenase) in the liver (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liver).[1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methanol#cite_note-Schep-18)

So ONE Tablespoon ingested can kill a human being.... wow.

I had one hiker complain about me burning the pages I had already read in my book...He wanted to read them next. So each night I would slice them off & give them to him or leave them in the shelter for him. At one point there were 4 thru's reading the same book!

You should talk to Rasty about his first aid kit. He's had it so long dry rot has lowered the weight. Every little bit helps, right? You'll be down to 47 3/4 before you know it.
