#3 best worst day on the trail. Hit a lot of lousy weather with Earhtdog & Cowhound early on the trail. Back in 88 the altimet I carried was about best weather forcaster you could get. Climbing Roan with them Reesa was having a hard time. As I looked at clouds, altimeter Earthdog mouthed to me "We going to make it?" I shook my head & mouthed back " No F***en way!" Sure enough we got caught in one hell of a storm. Reesa had an asma attack close to summit. I knew we had friends at shelter & ran ahead for help. Run up damn neer killed me too, but friends went out in storm to carry her pack & get her to the shelter. After that Todd & I argued about who caused the bad weather.

Months later we rejoin in the Mahoosics & wake up to rainy drizzly day. We argue about who's fault it is. At one point I watch both of them climb down a rock to sidestep a big puddle & brush into a bush. I stated we are doing it all wrong. They asked why I I said we are going to be drenched by end of day anyway & did the 3' leap into middle of the puddle & stomped my way out. Todd liked the idea, climbed back up the rock & did the same thing. From that point on it changed our outake. We happily stomped through every puddle we found!

All the othe thru's decide the same thing. It turns cold. As we sit in our sleeping bags Reesa says "I wish it would warm up" After a season of wishes coming through to the extremes every thru hike head snapped at her with a nasty look. She recanted & said "a little, just a little!"

No worries Elf!
We're confident that barring injuries etc we can do it.
We will also be endeavouring to "sort of" hike if an injury does crop up.
i.e. one will keep walking if the other is laid up etc.
Because of 6 month visa limitations etc, the option of flipflopping to catch up missed sections won't work for us if we have injury delays.
By hook or by crook we will travel all 14 states.

This "injuries" issue worries me. I know you're on a schedule, but take it slow and don't hike if your bodies' tell you to stop going. Lots of hikes have been ended as a result of injuries sustained when people are exhausted but push themselves to hike when they shouldn't.

Hope to see you in the summer.

Plan is to go as slow as we like for first 4 weeks and let the miles come when we're ready.

OzJacko
01-01-2013, 02:21
Our current "planned" zero days are anything from 2 to 4 for Trail Days, another 2 or 3 around NYC (may change given we fly in and out of there but Daniel keen on that one), and at least 2 to make Monson.
Slight possibility my wife may come to see us near the end and as her birthday is the 11th we could possibly have 3 at Monson.
In addition to that zero days will depend on schedule so while I refuse to "push" I will be watching the timetable.
Daniel will leave all that to me and if I say no to a zero he will understand.

The last couple of years had to do with the number of people who were out of work and decided to hike the trail in order to "figure things out" or the like. The lower completion rate won't affect your chances in the least.

One bounce box "bounced" about 4 times, and one small computer and batteries etc "bounced" about weekly for use to upload pics, journals etc - gives wi-fi access and avoids queues at libraries etc. Got that idea from Loner's YouTube videos this year.
Smartphones or similar on trail to make minimalist posts on TJ from the trail.
Buy food along the way, largely based on Baltimore Jack's 15 mile spreadsheet available here on WB.

I'd make a joke about the "people killer" guns remark, but the cafe ain't the place for that....
Don't want to talk about the guns either - we can just throw the bullets here.
They were just a couple of young blokes exploring their surroundings and as you can't just buy those guns here they posed for some pics for mates back home.
They didn't buy any.
You wouldn't get them in here anyway.
I seem to recall a bit of an "incident" about 30 years ago at an airport here because a celebrity (Frank Sinatra?) came through "packing heat".

Yeah, we love our guns here, I'm of a fairly progressive mindset otherwise, but I like things that go bang and have a serious recoil. It's really an American thing and I'll try to keep my discussion of it in the cafe to a minimum.

On a related note, my neighbor just got finished shooting of his 10ga shotgun cannon in celebration of the new year. (It shoots blanks, live rounds would cause it to explode.)

We do have guns here, mostly rifles and shotguns.
Old guy a block away from where I grew up had racing pigeons.
He had his neighbours convinced he had permission from the local authorities to shoot peregrine falcons chasing his birds as long as the trajectory took the shot over bushland across the road.

Yeah, we have our share of yahoos and law breakers here as well, they suck and reflect badly on the rest us. I'd gladly turn in people if I saw them shooting at Peregrine falcons. When I grew up there were no raptors around due to DDT poisoning. Birds of prey are awesome and I'm just glad I finally have the opportunity to watch them locally.

This guy was just passionate about his pigeons.
Australia is only country in the world where peregrines are not on endangered list.
They do very nicely here.
Thankfully few people shoot our eagles anymore.
They're mostly carrion eaters (like your bald eagle;)) but they used to get shot a lot for killing lambs.

My wifes farm has an eagles nest on it.
Actually three, but one is decrepit (?spelling), one is being used this year by peregrines and they are using a third one they built this year.
They seem to build a new one every 15-20 years.
Daniel is building a remote controlled quadcopter and we hope to go down and get video of the nest from it one day soon.

When I first started thinking of suggestions I was leaning towards a car at PInkham. More I thought about it I would place a car at Crawford/ Higland AMC center. Still on AMC shuttle stops. Actually quicker shuttle to Fanconia THs. Give freedom to resupply snack & lunch food after a few days. Have option of going into town for a nightas opposed to expensive AMC lodging & get a meal other than what they choose to serve. From there you also have the option of moving car to Pinkham/Gorham & use the shuttle.

I'm paying close attention the info u are giving TW. I'm so confused about what the "rules" are in the Whites about camping. Is it a good plan to stealth in the Whites? I don't think the huts are a good place to stay unless you have $$ to burn. But, maybe the huts are the only way to get through and you have to bit the bullet. The weather thru there concerns me any time of year. I know u all speak of "bail out" trails. I think I would get up close & personal with a map of all the trails, in the Whites.

Off top of head a relaxed hike to shelters/tent sites. Liberty Springs, Garfield, Guyot, Ethan Pond, Lake of Clouds Hut, Perch & out either via AT to Pinkham or Valley Way & catch shuttle.

yes its a good area to study thouroughly before you go.planning is necessary.it can be dangerous in bad weather stealth camping is just not possible in most areas of the whites due to the terrain, whcih is very rocky and underbrush below treeline is extremely dense. its also not allowed. is it done? yes but opportunities are limited and you would be hard pressed to find those sites unlessss you already knew about them.best not to plan on stealthing and sticking to established sites

Weather should play a big part of any hike in the Whites. Just about every campsite on AT has a caretaker. They check in every am & get a weather report. Have a map that shows alternates to AT. Also keep in mind the AT is not listed as such in the Whites. It goes by the old trail names. Every so often thrus complain they got lost when often they were probably on the AT.

I'm not sensitive about it. I just don't advertise the company I work for. It would be a violation of our "Social Media" policy. It's the reason I don't have a facebook account either. It's a great company with opportunities all over the world. I'm probably going to get transferred in the next 18 months. I have no idea where but I hope it's Colorado or someplace with mountains. I keep waiting for the company to pick up a New Zealand location. I would jump on that in a second. I would have to change my signature here on Whiteblaze to "Are lamb shanks really what it's all about". Now that's an ankle that I can eat all day.

Sounds like one would need someone, like yourself, to get through the Whites in good form. I know the thru-hikers do it but I've read their TJ's and they don't always look like they are having fun at all. Barely living through the experience, some of them. The weather makes or breaks the trip thru 2. It's like hurry up & wait to hike thru, it seems, when u are watching for good weather.

supposedly 2 out of 3 days of the year you will have bad weather in the presidentials. that being said, although you have to be prepared for nasty conditions and afternoon t storms are the norm, ive had spectacular weather about 3/4 of the time ive been up there. and the rewards are spectacular.no it definitely doesnt have to be a survival test, but it can be frustrating when you realize that 18 miles in a day may have been too ambitious. you take your time without dawdling and you will love every minute of it.

MM,
here are my basic goals...
cover the part of the AT that goes thru the Whites, all of it, if possible. I don't mind side access trails as long as the length doesn't make it a lot harder to cover the distance for the day on the AT
Try to avoid carrying full pack whenever possible
stay @Lake of the Clouds & maybe 2 other huts max
Do this in 12 days if possible
Get to Monson by August 12
am I prepared or what? :o

OK Train Wreck & Hiker Mom here's ruff draft. Everyone else give input

Here’s a quick overview of the hiking the Whites with limited stays at the AMC Huts. I present it northbound, I prefer tougher accents to decent, but either direction works. A lot of it is based on AMC shuttle system so I limited my scope to I-93 > Gorham. I am biased to AMC parking spots because they are what I have used. There are numerous hotels, B & Bs, & hostels that you could arrange parking with & maybe a shuttle too.
Campsites charge a fee along the AT. I believe $9 per person regardless if you tent or stay in shelter. Tent platforms are wood. Carry extra cord to compensate for stakes(they have eyeletes along the sides or carry a few screw in picture hooks. Most have caretakers to watch over the sites, manage composting privys & collect fees, etc, They also Check in with the AMC several times a day for weather briefings. They also know where decent legal stealth campsites are & if your plans change can radio Hut reservations ahead for you. (hint….share adult beverages with them will earn you karma there & further down your hike)

Most people heading from the south come up via I-93 & get off in Lincoln . From there take the “Kank” NH 112 over to Conway. It’s a beautful ride. Stop at the vistas & enjoy them. North Conway is a tourist town but at the north end there is an EMS in an old Victorian era hotel & almost across the street International Mountain Equipment. Check their basement out for used consignment gear. LL bean has an outlet store just south & there are numerous dining & lodging options. There’s a scenic railroad that travels up to AMC Highland center thru Crawford Notch, Mt Washington Observatory has it’s museum there, several covered bridges in the area…and many other things to do if you have time. Just north of town stop at the visitor center for a spectacular southern view of the presidential Range & Mt Washington.

I would initially plan to stash a car at the AMC Highland center. You can catch a shuttle back to I-93 & hit several trailheads. It gets to AT/Liberty Springs Trailhead very late morning. It is a steep trail but only a few miles. If you want a short day, camp at Liberty Springs CS. From there Garfield, Guyot, & Ethan Pond Have Shelters & Tent sites. You could shortcut Ethan Pond by hitting the AZ trail but you will miss Theroux Falls, Ethan Pond ( About my personal favorite campsite in the Whites) & Aruthea? Falls along with Webster Cliff Trail. Other than Webster Cliff on north side of Crawford Notch what you would skip is mostly on old logging RR beds. History point: as you traverse this section as you look left/south. Almost all of this was logged at one time. Most of the trails in the Pemigiwassset Wilderness are along old timber RR beds. Check local bookstores & museums & you will be amazed.

OK Now you are at Rt 302/ Crawford Notch & Back at your car. AMC offers lodging & a shower but if you have wheels you can find cheaper, more private accommodations, or hit a campground. I would consider moving the vehicle to Pinkham & catching a shuttle back again. If weather is good do Webster Cliff Trail. Hands will be required at times climbing. If bad go from Highland Center up Bridal path. Destination is Lake of the Clouds Hut. From Mizpah Hut/ Nauhem Tent site most is above tree line. Be careful & consider changing plans if it gets bad. Splurge here if you have the money to stay. If not get a caretaker to radio in reservations for Dungeon (this is where Karma pays off) for normal campsite fee they have limited hiker accommodations for self sufficient hikers. From there think of Osgood Campsite or one of the Randolh Mountain Clubs cabins. This section is almost all above treeline. If it’s bad, bail on any one of numerous trails to Pinkham. From there it’s a pleasant walk down to Pinkham, or take Valley Way Trail to US 2 & catch a shuttle. Pinkham does have coin operated showers in its basement, lodging & family served meals, or hop in your car & do your own thing.

While at Pinkham take the 15 minutes & climb Table rock? For a awesome view of the Presidentials & What you just hiked over.

From Pinkham to Gorham most hikers can make it to Imp & then Gorham/US-2 If you have time & want less crowds consider the Mahoosics. A loop can be done off the Success Pond Road out of Berlin. The Mahoosic Notch is the hardest mile of the entire AT. I have yet to meet a hiker that disputes this. It’s a scramble, crawl but very memorable. It’s rugged & rewarding & not as many people you will encounter so of them.

This being said it has been a few years since I have been there. I grew up spending vacations in Berlin, NH & when I got older the Whites were my go to destination. There are a few errors here & many typos. Just a first draft. If you see them point them out to me please. If you have a question never hesitate to email me: [email protected].

adding to what Mountain Mike just said, I hiked from US4 in VT to Pinkham Notch this past July (I guess I can say "last year" now) - - I didn't stay in any huts per-se - I did stay in the Dungeon of Lake of the Clouds which is more like a trail shelter.

camping here, as he says "Liberty Springs CS. From there Garfield, Guyot, & Ethan Pond Have Shelters & Tent sites" is the way to go

Guyot is off the trail about a mile but it is SUPER pretty and there is a trail shelter there too.

ok - back to the music ..........
