If you ever get a chance to stop in a bookstore or even many of tourist stoops have books of logging area. Amazing to check out. Most of Pemi Wilderness was one clear cut. Most trails were once RR beds to haul logs out. Zealand cliff they say is scared from fire due to logging, but I could never spot the burn marks they say are there. Still some log trestles along the Wilderness trail.

Forget TV - the ultimate thing to do on NYD is to go to the movies - Deanna astounded me - she bought Groupon tickets in bulk printed them - We went to "The Hobbit" for $4 a piece. at the end we waited for the place to clear - I grabbed some 3D glasses and we slipped into the 3D - EXTRA FRAME RATE, version for half an hour, WOOO! WOOO! For the sci fi and the folks like me that have read the book a long time ago - there is nothing like seeing the Alps of New Zealand in 3d! The movie is yet another trilogy so the ride doesn't stop - I with the critics RECOMMEND!

Love driving on the 'Kank'! Of course that is because the foot with the extra toe is the one that operates the 'loud' pedal. Extra weight makes it louder and faster! I can't wait to really hike the Whites. I have only done Mt. Washington; and that was from the parking lot near the summit. But at least I did 'summit' and did drive up that beast.  next time it will be just walking it. Less nerve wracking.

tie in-- the first time i read the hobbit was right before my very first hike to the whites franconia to crawford, imagined myself to be bilbo hiking into the misty mountains.
never did see dragons but i did see things.(ive already told the story of the chemically enhanced bottle of yukon jack that trip).

woo-haveyou ever hiked the whites?

I found 'the Hobbit' while in the Corps, I ran right out and Got the LoTR, then The Silmarillion, all in my last year. Robin Trower was the sound track!:D

Ok.. then S'more go back to page 613 and print off Mountain Mike's ruff draft to hiking thru the Whites. I have also driven up Mt Washington.. beast is right!

So, a real question-- I have a good probability to be able to hike from Caratunk, ME, this summer, and go either south or north. Which would be better? Or the alternative, and walk TO Caratunk ( which is probably a better choice come to think of it.) But still, from??? Time is not an exact worry, just summer (late June - mid August, a week or 3). And yes. I know all about them damned black flies.

Do you have pics to share of ur hike? My hubby and I stopped at the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center a few years ago. We hiked away from Mt. Washington on the AT leaving from that Visitor Center. We hadn't planned on hiking the trail at all but I was drawn to hiking it for a bit. It was Feb.- so beautiful there. I hated to turn around.

I just put two in my gallery for you. For some reason, every time I try to upload a photo to a thread, it says that I've exceeded my bandwidth. I don't know why. Everybody else seems to do it.
Anyway, two in the gallery - one of me on Moosilauke and the other in the dungeon of Lake of the Clouds. I have a bunch - - Eastern VT, Smarts Mtn. Hexicuba, Glencliff, Franconia, Webster Cliffs, Mt. Washington, etc. Let me know if you want any suggestions.

Atta girl. :) I haven't thought much about hiking in Maine yet myself. My daughter has hiked over 1/2 the trail. She lets me "tag" along with her on hikes so I've done some really nice sections with her. The next section we will do is middle PA, heading north. Hi Furlough.... I noticed that b4 as well. I think it's always been that way, but not used consistently, if that makes any sense. The threads are closed.

I see that about the closed threads, but look at the folder for this thread. It has red on it and a small grey box as well. Marked for Closure???

The reddish tint means this is an active thread.....and then-some. The gray box means that YOU posted in it.

Well, it looks like this thread folder is more brown with a grey box while other folders are all green. I don't think it means anything.

Hey slow mind- are you planning to hike this year?

I am, I have my 12th loop on Isle Royale planned for early May, for me it never gets old & it's a great way for me to kick off the summer. After in June I plan to do a southern section on the AT. I'll start on Springer & hope to have time to make it to Damascus...we'll see. Hiking has been becoming more and more of a priority for me during the summer. I've spent quite a few years sailing on the Great Lakes and east coast but I'm finding hiking more appealing every year.

Thank you for asking!
