The reason I asked was, I'm wondering if we should carry a pair for the hubby when we do the Whites. Just in case. He's had knee issues in the past. Do you put them on as a preventive measure, or are they best used if you start having knee pain, and not otherwise.

I would advise 2 use the brace as a preventative.. knee issues in our family 2. The IT band brace they sell at Wally World for about 7 bucks is gr8. A thru-hiker told me about it. Works good. Strap that puppy on & you are good to go. Then, after a hike use a "roller" and stretch those muscles out... it hurts sooo good. :)

I wear right from the start, all day. A long, long, long time ago back when the trails were invented, downhills would just kill me even at a young age. I would grab my leg just above the knee and sometimes just below it and say if only I had something that would squeeze here I'd be OK. Well I/we started tying bandanas around our legs just above the knee on downhills and it really helped. But that would cut in and cut the circulation off so as soon as your downhill was done you had to take them off. Then we started using all kinds of braces and stuff and a lot were worse than using nothing at all. Then I found Cho-Pats - the double one - above and below the knee and it's the best thing that's happened to me gear wise.

Yep. I've had trouble with the right knee in the past and to avoid any trouble with either I just wear it on both. You can tell when you step on a rock or a root or in a hole and your ankle and legs twists weird, you'll feel that those things helped.

OK, I'll talk to him about the straps. I want to do everything I can to make this a successful trip! But if he has trouble once we get there, I'll still keep hiking and he can shuttle, hang out at the campground, whatever (Plan B). are you sure you can't make it to Monson?

Thanks TW... I'm very athletic ;) I really don't "dress up" much at all. So, the first pic was a "cleaned up" HM pic. I wear workout clothes nearly every day. I don't work outside the home right now. LUcky me!!
I worked 24/7 at Curves for Women about 5 years, a few years ago. It was the perfect job for me. I helped so many women get fit on those hydrolic machines. But, it's one of those places that if you don't really push yourself, you don't get much out of the workout.

I was the "cheerleader" as the fitness instructor cheering them on- plus getting on the machines myself to show them how to use the machines to get the best workout. :) I met sooo many people. I worked at 3 different clubs in the area 2.

I worked at the Daleville Curves, close to Outdoor Trails in Daleville. All the women got an education about the AT and AT hikers, during their 30 minute workout.:D
You have to have the" gift of gab" with this job as well so that worked for me 2.

Every time a thru-hiker came into the parking lot "fresh off the trail"- I would excuse myself for a min., run out the door to greet them and talk to them 2. Haha!!
The owner wanted me to be the manager of the Club in Daleville but I didn't want that responsibility. I like Curves but there's other workouts places that seem to have more options for getting in shape. The AT is the BEST option!! :)

Sooo now u know all about me. ;) We won't have anything to talk about in ME. LOL!! Just kiddin. :) I'd love to join u but I don't think I can talk the hubs into going with me & he doesn't want me to go alone. I don't either, really. I would really love to meet y'all one day, tho.

Yeah. I was doing 12's pretty regular down here in FL till just before Christmas, still doing 4's sometimes 2x a day and gonna get back at it real soon, but that doesn't compare to Georgia. Wanted to get on the Pinhoti for a week or so but that can't be done. I have to settle fot a 70 mile 6 dayer right at the end of Feb for a last shakedown. All flat through the swamp. Confession time x2.
When I started posting more actively on WB I had a thought that it would be good to make a friend or two as Daniel and I were staring at 6 months in a foreign country where we know no-one.
I had absolutely no idea that the cafe would come along and I would have so much fun with so many (I think) like minded people.
The friendship all of you have been extending has been unexpected and overwhelming.
I thank ALL of you and hope that I don't disappoint as friend when we meet.
I'm not the gushy type but HB sums it up well when he says "I love you guys".
Now I'm going to dig a hole and sweat so you can't tell my eyes are watering.....
Well said Oz. My sentiments exactly. It's been a pleasure everyone. Can't wait until we meet in person. It'll be like the good old days.

Do palm fronds make the cheese last longer?

When I lived in Brazil Heart of Palm was considered a delicacy. Also when Teddy Roosevelt was discovering the River of Doubt (leads into the Amazon) it was one of the things that help keep them alive.

just let your body work into it at its own pace and make sure your hiking your pace not someone elses. no reason not to push as long as you feel good.listen to your own body and hike at your own pace.

The biggest concern from what I have seen is taking care of your feet. When doing my section during Spring Break in GA saw too many "potential" thru hikers in pain and getting off the trail due to their feet.

Blisters are a huge problem early on & even later on the trail. Knowing how to prevent & treat them is a topic I haven't seen much & can make a big difference. Worst one I got was when I switched boots up north. My feet were tough by then & I had well broken in boots from before my hike. My foot had changed so much I got a blister under a callous.

your right proper foot care is important. ill air out my feet whenever i can , and wash them if possible every day. its all the crud that helps create hot spots and blisters.in the sock thread somebody said some like to sleep in their socks, but except winter im barefoot. i got viva barefoot camp shoes which are great for airing out my feet and offering enough protection for stream crossings

I was watching the Doctors the other day and blister treatment was one of the topics. They said to pop with a clean needle, drain it and put a band-aid on it. Not a single mention of threading it. That's 4 doctors on there.

Your comments and HB's about wrong shoe size tie in to what amazed me. Here I was just section hiking during Spring Break and I had done a lot more research than some of these people who had "planned" to be hiking the next 5-6 months. If you are going to quit your job and give up your income for this much time, you would think you would want to be committed to being as prepared as possible to make it a success.

why i suggested shoes is its because they over research the footwear thing, thinking the most "popular" shoes are the right ones for them. and without first testing them with a full pack multi day hike, they start out wearing new shoes for the first time with maybe no more than 20 miles on them from "breaking them in". i think most here know theres noo one shoe that works for everyone, and having the right footwear in the right size is the most important element

Day 3 of my thru starting from the falls there was one older gent (Probably my age now) that complained about how heavy his pack was every day. It was a short day due to a downpour. What I was thinking not so much the brand/type of shoe, but that it was broken in with the type of socks you are wearing and a size bigger than your normal size. While not for everyone having a liner sock inside a wool sock worked better for me. When I said research, I was thinking about actual trial experience in addtion to just reading (to see what actually works for you).

shoes dont need to be broken in, they should fit well out of the box. ive had a lot of brands of shoes and keens fit my feet the best. i have a narrow heel and a wide forefoot and your foot spreads as you walk. your feet swell during the day. my main point is whatever you choose, use them on a week long section first. your shoes are right or not by the 4th day.i have switched however to la sportiva mountain runners.goretex is lousy in the summer and i already love the lighter shoes.
the rest is just rying to keep your feet as dry and clean as possible

I think a lot of Thrus do it as more of an achievement these days & not to enjoy time in the woods. Weather window isn't that severe on AT as other triple crowner's. You still feel the need to make miles, especially if you do zeros. I loved my Sierra hike on PCT sobo in 98 because I had very little time restriction. At one point I teamed up with a hiker that had to abort his planned hike due to GI illness. Met him coming out of Tualomne & we camped together or close for over a week. When I hit a side trail for a resupply & we realized it was last time we would see each other he thanked me for reminding him how to hike civilized. He enjoyed laying out in the middle of the day on some alpine meadow besides a lake, reading or taking a nap. At first when he took off it was just "I'll see you down the trail" Later on he lingered more. Am I a camper or a hiker...I'm a little of both.
