Trailname is 42. Just a number that has followed me around my whole life, and since I am (or a least was) an engineer it sort of fits.
It is also a number that is very relevant to the trail (for example, look at the termini of the trail). Also, I have the answer (42), but am on a long, seemingly endless quest (hike) to find the question.

On the rare times I need to share the trail name, I usually get confused stares. But it beats explaining the user name by far.

its so funny how we all like the same music - obviously, I like this last Neil Young one (It's called Natural Beauty) too - I did listen to it for a whole year living in the bed in the back of my pickup truck though so it sort of reminds me of living on the road and not to be honest the greatest parts - flat tires, asphalt, rain, truck stop showers and so forth. My 15 year old son told me last week his was the smart phone generation, but mine was the good music generation. :)

That's what keeps on surprising me, how young some of these kids, and they are very much into the "old" music. I guess it's a outcome of the internet and its capability to reach a much wider audience than we ever thought possible.

OK.
Update time.
After 6 months of telling me that I can have 7 months leave without pay, my boss told me a few days ago that Melbourne administration have told him they can't keep my job open that long.
After discussion with my wonderful wife, we decided that we are in a position that I can cease fulltime work.
I may return to some kind of employment after I return although I am not motivated to do so even before my hike, but we have no definite plans and I am certainly not looking for fulltime work again.
At most I will do some oddjobs or very short term work. Most likely I will do some hobby/craft things that make some money when we do market stalls.
So for want of a better term I am "retiring" on 5th March.
I am very happy.;):D

Sounds like you got a graet wife. I have too myself. I retired 18 months ago. It was at a 50% rate. My wife and I discussed it and she has long known my dream and said just quit the sock mill and get ready to go. So that's what I did. The difference at 50% now and 100% at 65 is the same till age 75. Only after that does it start to pay more. But who's to say if I make it that far or what physical shape I'd be in. I'm not the pillar of physical fitness, but right now I'm in good enough shape to give it a go.

As a rule of thumb draw a line horizontally across the map a bit above the widest point of the country.
The coast line above the line has saltwater crocodiles and you should be careful about swimming there to the point of NOT swimming there.
Below the line you only have to watch out for sharks, "rips" and along the south coast "king" waves.:p
Just about everything more than 100 mile from the coast is hot to bluddy hot most of the time.
The rest of the country is great except for the snakes, spiders, ants, flies and the fact that over 20 million of us cram into that bit.:D

Interestingly David Allan Coe originally wrote it, but Johnny Paycheck (stage name playing off of Johnny Cash) had the hit with it. Story I heard was DAC was watching some firemen put out a fire and a friend asked him how we would like to do that for a living, and he replied with the name of the song. DAC had been frustrated that he never capitalzied on Lord Help Me Jesus (Kris Kistofferson), so this time he followed thru and wrote the song. Supposedly DAC already a bad reputation (prison, etc.) and the thought was Johnny Paycheck (better reputation, at least at that time) could get more airplay and general public acceptance out of it.

Milkman,
I look at that as a bet you can not loose. You come up financially short only if you live past 75, and if you do that, hey you are still alive! And look at the improved quality of life you will have over those 10 years between 55-65. And in between doing what you want, if you really wanted (or needed) to, you could probably pick up some type of other work for the 50% if necessary.

I sort of did the same thing taking a signifcant pay cut going from industry to being a college professor for the additional flexibilty and reduced workload to spend more time with my 4 children. They are not going to care that much about all the free time I have when I am officially retired and they are grown. For what it is worth from the Cafe's resident business professor, it sound like you made a great financial (and quality of life) decission. Congratulations to you also!

Oz, it is an awesome country despite the preadators you mention. We spent 3 weeks there in 1998 (only way I could convince my wife to stay with me through the end of the project in Singapore). IMO you have the best tour guides of any of the nearly 30 countries I have been to. That is what I thought. My mom always made them NYD (and lot the rest of the year along with purple hulls which she also grew in her garden). My wife is from Indiana, so we only get these now when I buy and make them. I appreciate you bringing it up. I will have to do it next year so my children will at least be exposed to our old southern family traditions. Will need to make some cornbread to go with it too.
Peas for pennies, greens for dollars, and cornbread for gold. Another Southern folklore is why it brings luck is because the Northern Army considered the black-eyed peas suitable for animals only, so they didn't carry away the crops or destroy them.

Milkman,
I look at that as a bet you can not loose.

Thanks for the congrats. I worked liked a dog to get it. Might as well enjoy it while I can.

While we're on the topic of food, a thru from this year gave me a good idea last night at supper. Take a honey bun, cover it with peanut butter, place another honey bun on top, cover it with Nutella, place another honey bun on top of that and you got a triple-decker energy fix. Almost 2000 calories in one shot.
