Yeah, I'm playing that same mind game right now. I think I'm going with a monkeyman fleece, lighter down jacket and shell. I almost packed the bear bag rope, but I was afraid all the real hikers would make fun of me.

Now do I pack my horribly designed rain pants or not?

from what i can tell theyre not forecasting more than .25 to .5 inch of rainfall tomorrow, dry the rest of the weekend. im foregoing rainpants and just going with my softshell pants.bring rope we can hang food in a shelter and then tent far away from it.im thinking of doing a maildrop, or am i overthinking this?what is an imaginary hiker anyway?

He is insane. The largest waves I have ever surfed in my kayak is around 12' which on a beach break is scary. Paddling out is like try to get through class 5 rapids. No margin for error. I really like the 6 to 8' range much better which is either tropical storm weather or fall swells. That boat he has is really nice but I don't have $2600 to spend on another kayak because I already have two. My old whitewater boat just turned 24 years old.

See there are advantages of not being the tallest guy around. Being only 5'8" I rememember talking to a 6'7" friend in college about how great it would be to be his height. He said you think about that next time you get on a bus or an airplane. He had a good point.

But if you are hiking in the morning with a taller person, be sure to let him take the lead. That way he can take care of all the spider webs for you.
I'm just 6' but Daniel is about 6'5".
We got into buying stuff on the internet initially because of this problem.
In our outdoor shops the only tents that accomodate his length are at least 5 to 6 pounds.
We found TarpTents firstly for the dimensions.
It didn't hurt that they are about half the cost of the "lightweight" tents here as well.

Not buying into that thread as will need to see how I feel when I get to AT shelters.
On Bib all shelters have picnic table under roof.
Did use sleeping platform at one hut to get away from wind.
No bears and few other nuisance critters so no comparison.
Many of our huts have woodchips as floor (instead of sand etc.) around the tables.
I found them perfect for the wood burning option of my Caldera Cone.
Just lean over and grab more fuel from my seat.:D

Shelters are good places to take a nap in the middle of the day (or not). Since you will likely be hiking with a large pack at first, the shelters will be kinda crowded.

If you sleep in a shelter at night, bring ear plugs unless you like hearing loud snoring. There are lots of camping places in the South with fire circles. Usually at the summit of every small, large mountain or PUD there is a already used campsite. The summit types usually don't have springs so camel up before you camp on a summit.

Shelters are usually dirty and have lots of mice.

Anything else you want to know ask Lone Wolf.

If you surfed during huricane Andrew, you really are a high adventure kind of guy! I admire you for it, but do not expect me to be following your example. Actually, I believe surfing is the most difficult thing I ever tried to do in my life. I grew up in South Florida on the east coast, but our top entertainment during serious huricanes was looking out between the plywood on the windows at the trees bending in the wind, and occasionly watching things fly around the yard (sort of like the Wizard of Oz).

When Andrew was hitting Miami, Flagler Beach, about 200 miles north did not have the high winds, just the big waves. Close to shore it was like a washing machine, but on the outside the waves were huge. I used to be in better shape. I retired from surfing after that cuz I figured it couldn't get any better.

I think there are some pictures of me surfing the Andrew waves in some of the surf shops in Flagler. No one else could get out past the sand bar cuz of the washing machine effect.

Lesson #1 Watch out for the hot doggers ... the guys who paddle 100 yards to catch the wave you've been waiting for all day and then yell at you when they get in your way. Don't be intimidated. Use an old board so when you run over them, you won't care if your board gets damaged. It's fun to watch them cry when their $700 board gets broken in half.

I have an even better plan. I have two kayaks that I use for surfing. My 1986 Perception Dancer is 10'11" and is my choice for hollow waves bigger then chest high. Nothing like getting barrelled in a boat. It is also my choice boat for head high and bigger choppy days as the other boat is two slow paddling out. My newer boat is a Riot Boogie Surf kayak with three fins. This boat is twice as manuverable and is great for all the other waves. I have been surfing with since 1986 and have only hit one person ever and it was intentional. A sponger that kept cutting me off. Surfers tend to avoid us "goat boaters". These pics are not my boats but are the same models.

Morning all.
My one day off this week and I popped in for a morning/evening chat.
My wife and a friend have gone for a few hours on what has become an annual ritual for them.
A local blueberry farm allows you to pick 'em yourself cheap.

What? the ducks or the barn?
We put that barn in the pond a long time ago. It was to keep the chickens from breaking their ankles when the fell out of the loft. Once the ducks found out what we were doing with the chicken ankles the started wearing gortex boots. They think we can't see their ankles.

Morning Oz. Ya'll are making our headlines over here with the wild fires.
Yeah they're not good.
So far all the major ones are over east where they are setting all kinds of heat records.
Our summer is really only just picking up force really.
We had a bad heat wave over Christmas/New year but for Perth late January/early February is the worst.
As a bushwalker you see how much "fuel load" there is and if a fire takes off around Perth the people who live in the hills suburbs are in serious danger.
Many don't seem to care and allow trees etc right up to their houses.

So far I'm a bit further than Mountain Mike is from the AT but that could change at any time.
The whole country is hot and ready to burn.
We don't have deciduous trees.
Eucalypt trees burn very hot. Once they start the fire can just race through the treetops over your head.

I just have a couple of really play boats. Flat water. I wouldn't want to take them in any type of whitewater. But Lake Norman is big. and close! All I have to do is paddle. And there are plenty of paddling days, every month of the year!
