Might not be a bad idea. You might get some bureaucrat that the onlly excise they get is polishing a chair with their but & think you are crazy in your stated intentions for coming to USA. Not keen on ducks either.
Their droppings are disgusting....

My parents had a 30 acre lake on our property I grew up on in Florida. When in college we has a lot of ducks, sounds neat, but they made a mess of the back patio. Come home from the next break in college and no more ducks. Ask my parents what happened? They tell me while I was gone they had an alligator. Evidently before they got rid of him, he enjoyed some duck dinners.

Problem with hiking in the rain near home, you get tired of it after a while and cut it short and just go home. Where as on the AT, you have to just keep going until you get to your shelter or wharever next destination.

18982Muir Hut at Muir Pas on PCT. Beautiful fireplace, but at 11,000' No trees in sight. I think it's 5 miles to closest one.
What was the temp at that moment?

I have a beat up one of these I could drop off outside the back door if there is any interest... just don't burn the empty cups.
But they give off such pretty colors when they burn.

Late August I'd guess sixties. Wind was whipping though & thus need for parka when not hiking.

Great photo. We hiked a section of the JMT back in 1992 with a couple of good friends. It was the North Lake / South Lake loop if I recall correctly. If you guys hold on for a few minutes, I'll see if I can find and scan the photo. That was a truly memorable hike and I would love to go back to the Sierras again.

Difference of right coast vs left coast hiking. Snow doesn't really mean cold. They just get so much on left side it takes forever to melt.

Like most in 95 I aborted my thru hike of PCT & skipped around the Sierras due to heavy snow pack. Not so much because of the snow but the fords. In 98 I made up the section SOBO starting Donner Pass & ending coming out & over Mt Whitney in a Labor Day snowstorm.

I would DEFINITELY ad a hike in the Sierras as a bucket list hike!

18983Not that deep in August but still bone chilling cold(Snow melt). You go from cold to pins & needles in the legs to pleasantly numb. Only problem is when you warm back up you go through same feelings in reverse

Mountain Mike, you have a lot experience hiking all around the USA. What would you rank as your top 5 must do trails in order?

Would you quit your job to cyber-hike?

Or better yet get paid while you cyber-hike by not quitting your job!

How can you limit it to 5? I want to finish or do most of Triple Crown. So I still have 100+ miles of PCT to Finish. CDT I was thinking of starting this year, but decided to spend month boss has agreed to let me off on 25th aniversary off on my AT hike. Other Trails on Bucket List. Wonderland Trail around Mt Rainier. Sheltonwee Trace in KY. Wander around the Winds in WY (Parts are CDT), JMT is close & sometime PCT is awesome. AZ Trail, ...

I guess I should have asked for Top 20. Finding time to complete AT is challenge now, but always want to know the best of what else is out there.
