I almost bailed on my Mt Whitney summit attempt. Fresh snow, & white out conditions. I left both compasses in backpack. Little one wore around neck for 500 miles suddenly bugged me night before & took it off & thew it in my pack that I left at trail jct. Was about to turn around when I looked at my altimeter watch & was just 50' shy of summit & decided to go for it. Trip off the mountain I was slightly hypothermic to point of spilling a pot of ramens to warm myself up.

PCT is graded to 15% for equestrians. Easy hiking compared to AT. Early in on PCT some women were complaining about how steep trail was. Me an another hiker that did AT chuckled & said it isn't steep till you stand on the trail & can extend your hand & touch it! One learned when we hiked on the Long Trail.18996

What I do remember was how chilly it got when the sun dipped behind the mountains, and how hot it immediately got in the morning as soon as it made it over the ridge again. We went near the end of July during a heat wave. Every day, soon as you got up, put on a layer of sunscreen, a layer of bug repellant, and started walking. The trail was dusty so you soon got a third layer of dust sticking to you.
I also remember nights thick with stars like diamond dust, streams that would take your breath away they were so cold - but felt sooo good once you got over the shock, and a granite gorge so beautiful we just stared when we came around the bend and got our first glimpse.
It was a grand experience. Thanks for reminding me of that trip.

Slow Mind, you with us here? What's Isle Royale like? Have you seen any wolves there?

Isle Royale, when visited at the right times(early and late season), is best described as remote. I try to make my first trip in the beginning of May before the park is oficcially open. You need to be self contained for the duration of your hike + a couple days margin, very few supplies are available on the island. NO supplies are available before the official opening date. Last season on an early 10 day hike I did not see another person from the time the park service dropped me off until I returned to the ranger station to catch the ferry. Going in July or August can be a whole different story as far as other people. That is relative though as the park only sees about 17,000 visitors anually. The shelters are also TOP notch...mosquito, fly and mouse free!

As far as wolves go, no I haven't seen one on the island yet (seen many near home) The wolf population on Isle Royale is in serious trouble. The current count is down to 9. A healthy number is more around 25-35 animals. They have rebounded from similar population declines in the past but their situation is tenuious at best. On the bright side Moose, Red Fox, Otters,Loons, and many other small critters are everywhere! They also don't share the same fear of humans as their mainland constituents so amazing up close encounters are common. Watch out for the Fox, they are kleptomaniacs.

I LOVE it there and will return several times next summer by ferry & under sail on my boat Percheye.

it was wet.iwas supposed to pick up coach and meet the elf at 9am but lou hit some traffic, and we didnt start hiking till about 9:45. there was a lot more snow than we anticipated, both elf and i were glad we had brought spikes, while coach lou tuffed it out(he hes a marine dammit!)but it was slow going uphill through 2-5 inches of wet crunchy snow with some postholing to boot. it wwas around 1pm when i started thinking our fist days destination, belters campsite was a bit ambitious, and as it began to rain i told the guys we'd betterjust aim for sharon mtn campsite,3 miles closer. they said they were glad i was the one to suggest it, as we got closer to sharon around 4:30 it was beginning to get dark and we see a headlamp come romping down toward us, and we all introduce ourselves to lazarus, who had hiked up a sside trail to meet us. we set up camp in a light rain, ate a quick meal and started to settle in for a while with little conversation.

dave and i got to the site around 4 pm while it was still light and found there was a shelter there. probably the most decrepit shelter ive ever seen.it was still raining lightly and our gear was still soaked and the idea of setting our wet tents up on wet snow again was less appealing. it was a decrepit shelter. but it was shelter, a chance for us to dry out a bit, and as disgusting as the place was, it was still a welcome respite from the days nastiness. lazarus showed up a little after dark, we were a bit concerned he wouldnt find the trail in the dark as the blue blazes were very faded and hard to see in daylight, let alone in the dark with headlamp shing on a fine blowing mist. he thanked us for breaking trail as he could just follow our footsteps. we had a great evening bsing about evrything from whiteblaze to politic and religion.we cooked in the shelter, and when i have a chance to upload it, dave took a picture with my soaked camera of me smoking in the shelter(we figure if anyone has a hard time with it, this is a shelter that definitely deserves to be burned to the ground

this morning we cooked breakfast, lazarus wanted to get an early start as he still had to hike back to his car and had about 6 miles more to hike than our 9.5. so dave and i said goodbye, he hiked on. we finished breakfast, packed up and started the final day around 7:30. we were glad we hadnt hiked this trail south to north as we came off mohawk ski area, we headed down steeply through some melted drifted snow a foot deep in spots and it was a lot of work downhill, forget coming from the other direction.
the entire mohawk trail is really beautiful, mostly hemlock forest with a lot of laurel and rhodos. it was a lot of work all three days, but it was great to share some time with cafe patrons and hopefully we can do it again in the near future. id like to go back again n the spring in drier conditions as the wet snow and postholing really wore us out.

There was no need to worry about where the food went, the shelter was so decrepit that even the mice avoided the place.

This was an ancient shelter on the Mohawk trail. It looked like someone had made an effort to fix up the roof a few years ago, but they were fighting a losing battle. The floor was an incomplete set of rotting and warped boards laid on the ground but not secured to anything.

This was definitely one shelter that Lone Wolf should be in charge of.

All the above, elevations while small are aften very steep, completly flat sections are almost nonexistent and there is alot of rock scrambling often on all fours. the 29 mile section they were reffering to is the Minong ridge. 5-6 days would make it quite easy, It can be, and I have done it in 2 days but its tough. Early in the year the Minong trail can be tough to follow, you need a compass for sure American made or not.( no blazes on IR)

Unfortunately we didnt get any good photos. The constant fog/mist stuck to all the electronics and we couldnt get any clear photos. I took a couple using HB's camera, but I don't know if they'll even be worth posting.

The section of the Mohawk trail from Rte 4 south to the A.T. Was both surprisingly challenging and completely awesome. We really need to hike it again on a clear day in the spring.

this morning we cooked breakfast, lazarus wanted to get an early start as he still had to hike back to his car and had about 6 miles more to hike than our 9.5. so dave and i said goodbye, he hiked on. we finished breakfast, packed up and started the final day around 7:30. we were glad we hadnt hiked this trail south to north as we came off mohawk ski area, we headed down steeply through some melted drifted snow a foot deep in spots and it was a lot of work downhill, forget coming from the other direction.
the entire mohawk trail is really beautiful, mostly hemlock forest with a lot of laurel and rhodos. it was a lot of work all three days, but it was great to share some time with cafe patrons and hopefully we can do it again in the near future. id like to go back again n the spring in drier conditions as the wet snow and postholing really wore us out.
i feel great though. and it was a geat time.miserable weather. but it was the only weather to be found, so we really made the best of it.

Proud of y'all for getting out there and making the most of it. We can not always control the cirumstances we find ourselves in life (such as the weather), but can control how we react to act to it. And looks like y'all adapted and had a great time.

What kind of shape are the hemlocks in? The stands of hemlock farther west are in serious trouble from the bug infestation. Which is a crying shame, look at some of the behemoths that you find in the old growth. That one on the right must be 300 years old.

One of my best trips was taking two newbies to Ethan Pond & 19008 Falls in the Whites. It started raining as we began our 5 hour drive up & never stopped the entire weekend. Sat night we were in the shelter when a hiker arrived & asked why they didn't have a bridge to get over the creek. We said it's a pretty easy rock hop. When he said what rocks we went down & sure enough they were under water( pic is normal times). Hike out was a wade of inlet & until we hit hight of land sort of like walking in a brook. Still an awsome trip. Aruta Falls on return was roaring & couldn't get halfway down trail to it.

it was mostly okay, but a lot of blowdown an area called cathedral pines had been hit by a tornado, and there was quite a bit of blowdown from 2 other storms. they they were mostly healthy groves but in the area near cathedral pines you saw a lot more bare branches from the wooley adelgid.

Is this the 95% cooked bacon in the grocery store? If it is then this will last months if still in the package and at least a week if unpacked. Bacon is very very safe because of the sodium nitrate and being smoked.

You can do the same thing at home if you other bacon that you like. Just cook it 90% and let cool before wrapping. Pancetta is also really tasty. Citterio is the brand I like because it's not too salty.

Thanks to all my friends in here! Hiking does make many true deep friendships. Just glad I have gotten to do the same with my cyber fiends. I love the time we spend together when we can't be on the trail. Be it mindless banter or advice, love it all. The Cafe has become a new home for me & I want to thank you all for being a part of it!

Is this the 95% cooked bacon in the grocery store? If it is then this will last months if still in the package and at least a week if unpacked. Bacon is very very safe because of the sodium nitrate and being smoked.

It is great to have a chef around who knows stuff like that. :)

I'm leaving for Arizona today and then next week I have jury duty. After that I am going to find snow somewhere and go hiking. I hope my 2002 Honda Accord makes it to Siberia.

Might want to make sure you have AAA. I buy new vehicles but drive them until they are in the 150,000 to 200,000 range. It helps to know you can get it towed if it dies.

Plan B post ...Welcome to the Cafe where I am proud to greet you. Throw your pack down, Get comfortable, & relax. Share your stories, & offer advise. Do both, but never judge in here. This is a special spot I share with dear friends. Make jokes, rubb some people sometimes but never take it to far. The people here are my Cyber family. That said does not mean I will not seek each of them out to hike with some day. Mess with any of them, you are messig with my family. Treat us right you have a vast combined knowledge here & some great people always willing to help..
Good stuff here Mike. We'll hike together one day, it's inevitable.

Living in Germany during 2001 and the Mad Cow disease scare. Therefore no beef at the company cafeteria, but we had just about everything else: goat, chicken, fish, deer, antelope, etc.. I believe even kangeroo (should have written everything down). Near by Army base was having a July 4th celebration we were able to go to. Since they had USDA beef we were able to eat tacos and hamburgers. After months without hamburger it was awesome!

I haven't had the pleasure of staying at an AT shelter yet but from what I'm learning....
Sure hang it up! but hang it from a tree or cable and pack out the plastic bag, don't burn it in the firepit\place that is only for wood and old poopy found nearby.

I go hiking to get away from urban issues. If I wanted to see graffiti I would go to the city. Maybe I should start paying attention to the "Colors" of hikers bandannas. I'm not t worried about hike by's from UL hikers, at most they carry two razor blades.

OK, can we focus here for a moment! What do you think is the longest unsupported hike you or anybody you know has gone on. by unsupported i mean not supported by food carried in a pack -- as in only eating at stores, yogi-ing, dining at restaurants or trail magic events. Carrying water is ok. If you don't give this topic serious consideration i'm going to post it in the Serious thread. I mean it. Oh. and unsupported has nothing to do with underwear.

not only did you lose my tracks, you missed the sign i stamped into the snow at the top of mohawk. it was an arrow pointing down hill, and the word "EAT". Twice. So don't yell at me.

Breakfast was good, by the way, and I did get the first "run" of the day down Mohawk. You think I'm weird? You should have seen the faces on the lift attendants.

youre gonna have to wait until later tonight. im going to have dinner with my daughter, granddaughter and the guy my daughters married to.

in a nutshell i dont believe ill be bringing it to maine. the jurys still out, but i see some obvious deficiencies. right now im leaning towards drops or nothing at all. i dont like the sawyer bags, too hard to fill without running water, but the filter itself can screw right on most water bottles, soda bottles. jurys still out.
ill see you guys later.

yeah - I think I heard that was your stomping ground - we hiked some trail (not Jerry Miller but the other one) up to Jerry Cabin and spent Thursday night with the Cleaner. On Friday, we walked to Spring Mtn. Shelter which was about 15 miles. On Saturday, we walked to Hot Springs and my friend Stretch (MEGA '08) took me back to my car which I shuttled to TN32 (Davenport Gap). I got back on in Hot Springs and hiked another 13 miles or so (till about 9pm) to Walnut Mountain Shelter which put me at about 24 for the day. On Sunday, I did 20 more by 3pm to Davenport Gap (whew.) Best regards to you HM
