When I was growing up, the manager of the Walgreen's in town had hair that was somewhat of a local legend. The man was well into his late 60's if not mid 70's and what was left of his hair had turned bright white. Still, this did not discourage him from putting his decades old, strawberry blonde toupee each morning before heading to work.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b120/cwillow894/toupee.jpg

The toupee in that photo is far more realistic than the one that the old manager wore. His looked like he had the top third of Davey Crockett's raccoon skin cap stapled to his head, without any thought being given to the long silvery hair on the sides of his head.

The real answer is that most every question imaginable regarding the A.T. has already been asked multiple times on this site. Most of us are glad to help an answer a new members question, however we wish there was some way to make sure that people looked through the Articles Section (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/content.php?176) and did a quick search of existing forum posts before creating a new thread.

I have lost count of how many times I've responded to people asking if the bears that live on the A.T. are really soulless killing machines that murder hikers in their sleep (they're not), or whether it's legal to carry a concealed handgun across 14 states while thru hiking (it's not). We try to be helpful, but sometime we get a little snarky, it's just human nature.

I don't even drink nor live in S.F. and that pisses me off, no, no, makes me laugh! What the hell is wrong with our appointed people, sure will just give up tons of dough to please the mayor, but we'll pay the taxes and $300,000 annual permit. Sure, right on dude....Idiots..rant over.

I understand why he is doing it. Most every time a city wins any championship they celebrate by vandalizing their own town. The theory is if you are not drunk, you are less likely to do that. There is an easier way, but it would require holding people responsible for their actions, rather than making excuses for them. A pattern is easy to observe. Find a city that does not act like idiots after a major win and look at their social policies and then compare them to a city that does act like idiots after a similar win. The answer is obvious... but excusing every ill is so much more popular. I could put up a list, but would likely be banned from whiteblaze.

Okay... what was funny about that rant... nothing... I am about to puke too... back to the humor.

I'm back. I bailed out to Gatlinburg last night. I have to figure out a way to keep my gloves thawed out after hiking in the freezing rain all day. The Smokies are beautiful but the hiking is slower then I thought it would be wearing microspikes. I needed to make 15 miles each day but was only making 11 the first two days. Hiked about 18 miles yesterday going downhill. I will try again soon to finish this section.

I checked each shelter I passed and Rifle hasn't carved anything.

Having an easy day. Daughter woke up at 4:30 vomiting with the flu every 10 minutes poor thing. So I am staying in with her and planning our March Break trip if I can get that week off, otherwise I'll take another week and pull her out of school for another week. We are looking to paddle upriver for half a day, then head up to hike for the other half, and repeat that for about 5-6 days to give us time to travel down and back from New Brunswick.

What is the Shenandoah River like for paddling upriver in early March? I suppose there is always a chance there will be heavy rains and we might stay further downstream closer to Harpers Ferry, but would like to get upriver as much as possible to get into some better hiking and camping. How easy is it to paddle the Shenandoah and hike some highlands all in the same day, every day for a week? Would there be a better area? Looking to do about 5-10 miles upriver paddles and an 5-10 mile hikes every day for 5-6 days. Best area that time of year. She is training for flatwater kayaking, but at 13 I am mostly interested in her just getting alot of adventure on real rivers and not training on some fixed course like a rat in a cage.

Spring hits later - damn cold.... JakNoted.
Might go later in March. But the river opens up in April here, still cold but open. We dress for it, but we know the place. Down there we would have to be more careful. How easy is to access the AT along the skyline in March? What about the roads that come up from the valley?

I once heard the gun part was not originally planned. Harrison Ford was sick and needed to go to the restroom, so he just sort of improvised and shot the guy to end the scene so he could go.

JAK,

Be careful if you go that time of year. A lot of cold air gets funneled down the river valley by whatever weather system passes through, and the weather can change quickly. The river is wide and water levels are typically higher that time of year also, which potentially adds to the difficulty.

Years ago, a group of us went to paddle a couple of sections up to & including the confluence at Harpers Ferry. it was the first weekend in April and the redbuds were in full bloom. we arrived at the campground with temps around 60 degrees, and woke up with 2" of snow on our tents and 35 degrees. We paddled anyway, like idiots. There were sections clogged with large patches of ice requiring more scouting than normal, which created less than ideal lines left open through the rapids. I was fully outfitted in the proper clothing, and still thought I'd freeze to death. If we'd flipped, we would have been in real trouble.

Try to contact a local outfitter to get their input on the best river/trail access points.

Btw, it's a beautiful float in May, there's usually still some water, and there's a couple of sections with some neat, small caves. It will definitely make a great dad/daughter trip if everything comes together just right. :)

I love to walk the hills in Acadia. It is a marvel what they built there. There are huge stone stairways that go on for a hundred yards at a time that are miles from the nearest road. I cannot imagine the labor involved to make our hike comfy.

What do you think I was wearing? a prom dress and high heels? ;)

Actually, I had a full neoprene wetsuit on, with polypro long johns & top, spray pants, spray jacket, wool socks, neoprene booties, paddling helmet, and I still froze my *** off. I'm not kidding, a swim would have been a total disaster & potentially life threatening due to the temps & river level. That water was as cold as it gets, the wind was wailing up the valley, and the river was running fairly high. We weren't carrying camping gear or extra stuff which adds to the difficulty of navigating rapids.
JAK could get this, or mild temps and sunny breezes. He also didn't mention if he & his daughter were going with a group, or alone.
